Walking on Guanqian Street in Macao, you can see tourists buying gifts in shops down the street. Members of tour groups are taking photos in front of the beautiful wall paintings on each side. Fashionable cafes along the street are crowded with coffee lovers.
To attract (吸引) more tourists and achieve new development of cultural tourism, what special efforts has been the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government making?
The Macao SAR government is eyeing its rich historic heritage (遗产) to attract more tourists. It is trying to revive historic areas that few tourists know. “The government has successfully developed several special places for tourists in recent years.” says Cheung Kin-chung, president of China Travel Service (Macao) Lid.
Taking the Lai Chi Vun shipyards as an example, Cheung says, “Shipbuilding was once very important in Macao’s development. Although the industry of building ships has declined (衰退), the old factories offer a chance to show Macao’s history.” Now they have become a living museum. There are exhibitions about the history of the shipyards. But the shipyards are also a place where local musicians perform. Tourists can both learn about history and experience modern life there.
Macao is also building itself as a “City of Performing Arts”. This has become a new step on its way to developing cultural tourism. With many nice places for concerts and performances, Macao holds lots of art events for tourists around the world to enjoy this year. During the Chinese Theater Cultural Festival, they could get a taste of traditional Chinese operas like “The Legend of the White Snake”.
As a place where Chinese culture meets foreign cultures, Macao provides varied cultural experiences. Supported by the Macao SAR government, “Fado Nights” concerts were held from March 29th to May 5th. It allows tourists to enjoy Fado, a traditional Portuguese musical form. In the concerts of the festival “Encounter in Macao”, Fado is included into Chinese music, creating a new form of performance. This art form shows tourists a mixed culture of China and Western countries.
In addition, the Macao SAR government has offered some special travel products and services. Together with travel companies, it has introduced many new guided tours for tourists to discover Macao. According to different festivals and events, the government has designed “My Treats For You” of special travel offers, including cheaper plane tickets, hotel rooms, as well as show tickets.

Seven years ago, when I first got on the camp bus of Camp George, I didn’t know anyone. People soon started to talk to me and I felt welcomed soon. It wasn’t long before I brought my best friend to Camp George. My best friend and I were close before camp but camp brought us closer.
My camp friends are so special. Everyone is welcome into our friend circle. We share funny jokes and create good memories that we will have forever. We eat together and sleep in a large room. Not only do I have a strong friendship with the girls in my camp, but I also get along well with the trip organizers. The close relationship that we build in the summer lasts forever.
I see my camp friends a lot during the year even though we don’t go to the same school. We understand each other and never get sick of each other. On our camp group chats we count down the days till we go back on the camp bus for a new camp year.
Camp is my home away from home and one of the main reasons I am coming back to camp for my seventh summer is my friendship with my best friends. Citywalk first appeared in London, England to make tourists travel like locals. A group of people followed a guide, enjoyed the city’s streets, saw buildings up close, and got a deep understanding of the history and culture. At that time, Citywalk emphasized (强调) the importance of heartfelt feeling and a new understanding.
But in China, Citywalk emphasizes following the heart and moving at a slower speed. People do not need to have a good plan before they start walking. Unlike walking in the park or in their neighborhood, Citywalk includes discovering old buildings, exploring special shops, having a cup of coffee, trying local food and so on. People take photos, make videos and share their stories online. They tell others where they go and what they find.
In this fast-paced world, young people are always working hard and they have little time for local exploration. Citywalk helps them have a warmer, more relaxing and slower-paced lifestyle. ①Have you ever visited any traditional Chinese gardens? They look like more natural sights than some Westerne-Gardens. They have a long history. As early as 1500, there were two main types of gardens: imperial (皇亲的) gardens and private gardens. Imperial gardens were for the use of the emperor and his family. Private gardens were built by important officials or wealthy businessmen. Both types of gardens were built for hunting and resting.
②The Summer Palace in Beijing is the most famous imperial garden in China. It covers about 3,000,000 m², three quarters of which is water. It’s called Kunming Lake. People can take a 10-minute boat ride to visit an island temple (庙宇), watch a traditional Chinese performance, enjoy the different buildings and courtyard. The garden is home to over 3,000 ancient buildings and more than 400,000 plants. Besides, there are more than 40,000 valuable works from each ancient period. With such a rich collection, the garden is known as the “Imperial Garden Museum.”

It is quite small compared to im-perial gardens, but it’s beautiful. When you are standing in any corner of the garden, it all looks like a lifelike picture. And the whole garden looks different in different seasons.
