Khaled Hosseini is one of the most widely read and beloved writers of this century. Through his famous novel, The Kite Runner, he has drawn people’s attention to his birthplace—Afghanistan.

Hosseini was born in 1965. Influenced by his well-educated parents, he grew up loving classical poems and writing stories. In 1976, the whole family moved to Paris because Hosseini’s father was sent to work there.

        Three years later, the war broke out in Afghanistan. The family found returning home impossible, so they went to the US in 1980.

Settled in the new country, Hosseini studied medicine to make a living. During his medical studies, he still found time to write stories. Once Hosseini leant from the Internet that Afghanistan had fallen again. That made him feel the need to tell the world about the life in his homeland before war. Therefore, he started to write his first novel about two Afghan boys separated by war and it came out in 2003. This was the well-known novel The Kite Runner.

After its success, Hosseini returned to Afghanistan for the first time in 27 years. Here was a sad fact: people had been scarred (伤痕累累) and damaged terribly by the war. It became part of life there. Hosseini made up his mind to continue writing novels to catch more attention to Afghanistan.

In 2006, he received the UN Humanitarian Award and agreed to help refugees (难民). The next year, he founded The Khaled Hosseini Foundation to offer help in Afghanistan. He stated, “We all have a personal duty to let our friends, our families, our communities, our governments know we support refugees. Please take action today.”
