Park Life

The Air You Breathe (呼吸)

A great way to make the air cleaner is by planting lots of trees! It is a fact that trees slowly filter (过滤) a lot of pollutants from the air. So come and help us plant some new ones at the south entrance to Fenhe Park at 2 p.m. next Sunday.

War on Graffiti (涂鸦)

Some people think graffiti is cool. Well, it is not! The best way to stop buildings from becoming totally covered in ugly graffiti is to get rid of it as soon as possible. And that is exactly what we are going to do. We are repainting (重涂颜料) the school walls. You don’t have to bring any tools, just remember to wear some old clothes! Come at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Hello, my name is Tom. I study in No. 7 Middle School. My school is not new but very big. My teachers and classmates are nice to me. I love them very much.

We practiced hard together after school. After five times’ practice, some students still couldn’t remember the words. Then one classmate came up with an idea. He divided us into small groups. Today, we consider zero as a common number. Few of us know zero has an unusual history. Zero is, in fact, very different from other numbers.

At first, there were only the numbers one to nine. Zero first appeared in India about 2,000 years ago. Many other ancient cultures had been marking nothingness. However, the ancient Indians were the first to consider nothingness a number.

Little by little, global communication became more frequent(频繁). Finally, zero was brought out of India. It was accepted as an Arabic numeral. During the 13th century, Arabic numerals were introduced into the West. However, westerners had been used to using Roman numerals (I, II, III, etc.). Arabic numerals were not popular. This was especially true for zero. Since there is no zero in Roman numerals, people found it hard to accept the new number. Dishonest business people could easily turn a “0” into a “6” or a “9”. Some people, therefore, believed zero would cause much trouble. Zero was also considered an unlucky number. That’s because it’s too negative(负面的) and close to the idea of having debts(债务). France and Italy even banned(禁止) the use of zero citywide.

It was not until 15th century that zero and the other Arabic numerals were fully accepted. Business people played an important role. Just thinking about doing calculation(计算)using Roman numerals. You can hardly do any trade, can you?

Seated in Southwest China, Guizhou is one of China's "natural treasures". It has beautiful mountains, lovely lakes and unique karst landforms (喀斯特地貌).

Visitors can see an amazing view of 700,000 cherry trees in bloom (鲜花盛开) in March. The beauty of Guizhou including Asia's tallest waterfall, Huangguoshu, and Asia's longest cave (洞穴), Shuanghe Cave can be seen by (C)them.

Along (B) its beautiful views, there are also unique local cultures. Guizhou is home to 17 ethnic groups (少数民族), including the Miao, Dong and Tujia. Because of the mountainous landscape (地貌), modern life has been slow to arrive. Many people still live according to old traditions. (D) For example, many Miao people still live in wooden houses. The houses are lifted up on stilts(桩子).

The mouth-watering food is also something you can't miss in Guizhou. Chili chicken, Kaili sour soup fish … sour and spicy flavors are typical here. With its unique natural landscape, colorful local culture and lovely food, it's no wonder that Guizhou's name translates to "precious (宝贵的) land".

As is known to all, exercise is good for your health. However, you need to do it in a scientific way. Otherwise, you can not only achieve the bad effect but also may hurt yourself. The following can help you exercise well.

Warm up. It is important to warm up before you exercise. You need to stretch your legs, arms, back and neck before you do any difficult activities like running.

Find good places to exercise. You do not need to spend a lot of money exercising. You can run or play sports in a park or in your school gym. You don’t need to buy exercise equipment for your home. Just get your body moving!

Don’t work too hard. Choose a sport that you are interested in and then your exercise will be fun instead of work. Also, you only need to exercise a few times each week. If you exercise for 30 minutes each time, you will stay healthy.

Drink enough water. It is important to drink water when you exercise. Your body needs the water for energy and for keeping cool.

Be careful! If you hurt yourself while you are exercising, rest until you feel better. Exercising when you are hurt is bad for your health.

Have you ever experienced bullying (欺凌)? You’re not alone. Bullying is a really common social problem around the world. In a study of young people in the UK aged 12-20, half of them said they had been bullied. About 1.5 million young people in the UK were bullied in 2015, and many of these were bullied every day. People who are bullied are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety. They might lose interest in the activities they enjoy, avoid spending time with other people and not go to classes or school, which has a negative effect on their physical and mental health.

Many people don’t know what can be called as bullying. Actually, bullying is not just physical, like hitting or kicking some one, or taking their things without permission. Bullying can also be with words-saying or writing things that are not nice. Another type of bullying is social— choosing not to include someone, embarrassing someone or telling other people not to be friends with them.

Bullying usually involves (涉及) more people than you think. There are the people who bully and those who are bullied. Sometimes other people help the bully or join in. Then there are the kids that support—they don’t bully anyone themselves, but they support the bullying by being an audience (观众). This is why it’s important for everyone to work together against bullying. To stop bullying, we need everyone to be brave and take a stand(表明立场).

Does your school do anything to prevent bullying? why don’t you create a student anti-bullying group? This group can do many things. Let the head teacher know how well the school is doing with fighting bullying and give them advice. Choose an anti-bullying slogan for your school, make posters and displays (展演), or take over the school’s social media for a week to send out anti-bullying messages.

Bullying is a social problem and it needs a solution from society. The next time you see someone being cruel to someone else, take a stand! Don’t laugh or ignore what’s happening—tell an adult as soon as possible and make everyone know that bullying is not OK.

School safety is a serious subject. Every student should learn to keep safe, but fights at school sometimes happen. How can you keep away from a fight? Here’s something you can do.

Be calm（冷静）, Sometimes, you feel so angry that you really want to teach somebody a lesson. But being angry can’t solve problems. A fight can’t help, _________. It may bring you more problems and trouble. In the school, everyone will be punished（惩罚）, if he gets into a fight. There is no winner in a fight.

Shout loudly. If you know someone is coming up behind you to attack（袭击）, turn to the person with your hands up in front of your body and loudly say “stop” before walking away. Loud voice can usually make the attacker calm down. If he doesn’t stop, shout for help by calling out the name of a teacher.

Say no. If your friend may ask you to join in a fight. You must not do that. Because helping him fight is not really helpful to him. Also, he and you may get hurt and be punished. If you really want to help him, try to ask him to give it up. Then you should try to know about why he wants a fight. You can tell the teachers or parents to ask for help. Or you help him find a right way to solve the problem.
