Once a year, a race is held for old cars. A lot of cars entered for this race last year and there was a great deal of excitement just before it began. One of the most handsome cars was a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. The most unusual car was a Benz which had only three wheels (车轮). Made in 1885, it was the oldest car taking part in the race. After a great many loud explosions(爆炸), the race began. Many of the cars broke down on the course and some drivers spent more time under their cars than in them.
A few cars, however, completed the race. The winning car reached a speed (速度) of forty miles an hour much faster than any of its rivals. It sped (加速前进) downhill at the end of the race and its driver had a lot of trouble trying to stop it. The race gave everyone a great deal of pleasure. It was very different from modern car races but no less exciting.

The British are well known for the amount of tea that they drink. Each person in the UK drinks around 1.9 kg of tea every year. That’s around 876 cups of tea. Tea is drunk by the whole society. But tea doesn’t grow in Britain. Most of the tea is grown in India and China. So how did it become an important part of British culture?
Tea arrived in London in the 1600s. At this time British ships were exploring(探索)the world and found the drink by accident in China. It was not long before green tea was available to buy. However, this was only available to the rich.
At the beginning of the 1700s, the amount of tea arriving in Britain increased gradually. Black tea arrived at this time. At first, people drank this tea exactly as it was in China. They soon discovered that it tasted good with a little milk and sugar, giving the drink a special British characteristic which can be seen as one of the symbols of Britain.
In the 1800s, tea was still a product enjoyed only by people with money. At this time they began to have “afternoon tea”. This means drinking tea with snacks around 4 pm to avoid feeling hungry between lunch and dinner. It is a tradition that is still going today but has become less popular in recent times.
In the late 1800s, the price of the tea dropped fast as more tea began to arrive on ships from India and China. It was no longer a drink just for rich people. Tearooms—shops where you could buy and drink tea—started to appear across the country. People enjoyed drinking tea and socializing(社交)in these places. At the start of the 20th century, the British began to make tea in their homes whenever they felt like it. Teapots became a must in every kitchen.

He introduced a set of systems, such as writing, money and measurements. He also ordered the building of a huge army of life-sized terracotta soldiers. These, he hoped, would protect his tomb(坟墓)after his death.
The soldiers today in Xi’an’s Terracotta Museum are light brown, but they weren’t always. They used to be an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple. Sadly, most of the color did not last to the present day. After being open to air during digging, the coating(覆盖层)under the paint began to fall off. The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg.
Now new technological ways are starting to show the army’s true colors. Archeologists(考古)have recently discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their drawings, including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes. Chinese and French researchers have developed a special medicine to help protect the soldiers’ colors. After they find a soldier, archeologists put some medicine onto it. They then cover it with plastic.
Archeologists are also finding colors in the dirt around the soldiers. It’s important not to mess the dirt, so the colors won’t be lost. “We are treating the earth as a treasure,” says Rong Bo, the museum’s leading archeologist, “the next challenge is to find a way to put the colors to the army again. Once that happens, artists can bring Emperor Qin’s army back to life in full colors.”

Antigen tests are used to test for COVID-19. But they work differently from the nucleic acid tests(核酸检测) that we are all familiar with. “Antigen is like the ‘clothes’ of the virus, while nucleic acid is the gene (基因) of the virus,” said Zhang Wenhong, head of the infectious disease department (感染科) at Fudan University’s Huashan Hospital.
The antigen tests are beneficial (有利的) because they produce results faster, in around 15 minutes, and don’t require a lab. People can use them in their own homes at their convenience.
But they aren’t as accurate (准确的). “In the early stage of infection, the amount of virus can be very low,” Zhang said. “The nucleic acid test can detect (检测) it but an antigen test cannot.”
According to the National Health Commission, three categories (类别) of people will be able to take an antigen test. They are people who have had a fever or respiratory symptoms (呼吸道症状) within five days, people undergoing centralized or home isolation (隔离), and other people who just want to take a test.
People who test positive (阳性) with the antigen kits will be treated as COVID-19 cases and must contact local authorities (当地相关部门) immediately, said the State Council. They will need to undergo centralized quarantine (隔离) and have regular(常规的) nucleic acid tests, reported China Daily.
At this time, China is sticking to its zero-COVID policy. With the Omicron variant (奥密克戎变异株) producing more asymptomatic (无症状的) cases, it is hoped that the introduction of antigen tests will help authorities to find infected people more rapidly, said Zhang.

Eggs hold a special meaning in many cultures, and China is no exception(例外). The Chinese believe eggs mean producing something new. After a baby is born, parents may hold a "red egg and ginger party," where they pass out eggs to announce the birth. In some areas of China the number of eggs represents the sex of the child, for example, an even number(1,3,5,---) for a girl, and an odd number(2,4,6---) if a boy has been born.
Noodles are a symbol of long life in Chinese culture. They are as much a part of a Chinese birthday celebration as a birthday cake with lit candles is in many countries. Since noodles represent long life, it is considered very unlucky to cut it off.
Although westerners sometimes may be very sorry to see fish lying on a plate, in China a whole fish is a symbol of richness. In fact, at a party it is traditional to serve the whole fish last, pointed toward the valued guest. Fish also has a special meaning because the Chinese word for fish, yu, sounds like the word for richness or plenty, and it is believed that eating fish will help your wishes come true in the year to come.
