文章大意:本文谈论的是同伴压力对青少年的影响,尤其是对青少年做决定的影响。

【推荐2】Have you ever experienced peer pressure (同伴压力)? For example, one day you’re with some friends playing video games and someone mentions, “Oh, that game’s easy. So not worth the time”. The others agree. Although you enjoy the game, not wanting to argue with them, you go along with the crowd. That is the peer pressure, which is also called peer influence. You will take a certain type of behavior, dress, or attitude in order to be accepted as a member of your “peers”.

We are all influenced by our peers at any age. For teens, it is more likely to be influenced by your peers around you. It is because you are away from home, you may spend more time with your friends than with your family. As you become more independent, your peers naturally play a greater role in your life.

According to researchers, teens can make correct decisions when they are calm. However, when they make decisions in the heat of the moment, their decisions are often influenced by their peers. In a recent study, a teen played a video game, either alone or with friends watching. The researchers discovered that the risks doubled when their friends were watching, compared with when they played alone.

Just as people can influence us to make unwise choices, they can also influence us to make good ones. A teen might join in a volunteer project because his or her friends are doing it, or get good grades. In fact, friends often encourage each other to study, or try out for sports.

While we are always influenced by those around us, the decision to act or not is up to us. So when it comes to decision making, the choice is up to you.

1. Why is the example of playing video games given in Paragraph 1?
A.To explain what peer pressure is.
B.To test if people have peer pressure.
C.To show how to deal with peer pressure.
2. According to the passage, why do teens have the peer pressure easily?
A.Because they need to compete with peers.
B.Because they spend more time with peers.
C.Because they have different ideas from peers.
3. What does the underlined phrase “in the heat of the moment” probably mean?
A.perfectlyB.carefullyC.hurriedly
4. How does the peer pressure influence teens in a good way?
A.It makes them more independent.
B.It leads them to develop themselves.
C.It keeps them away from unwise risks.
5. What does the writer want to tell us?
A.Mistakes can be avoided if we think twice.
B.We are supposed to choose friends carefully.
C.It is important to make decisions by ourselves.

【推荐3】Making Friends with Ducks

In traditional pet stores, you can buy an animal to be your companion at home. But there’s a new kind of “pet store” where you can spend some time with animals and just walk away without taking any of them with you. What really matters is to be there.

My colleagues and I visited one of these stores in the Sanlitun neighborhood of Beijing. We were looking for Call ducks (柯尔鸭), a Dutch species of pet ducks. They are famous for their cute looks and their sky-high prices—one of them can easily cost a few thousand yuan. Since we were not planning to spend so much on a duck any time soon, visiting them in one of these places—what I'd call “mini-zoos”—seemed to be the perfect choice.

There were five Gall ducks at the store and we spent a good three hours with them. We learned a lot about the species.

Call ducks are not as obedient enough to follow what they are told to do as dogs, so playing with them takes a lot of chasing from our side and quacking (呱呱叫) from theirs. Also, don’t expect them to be house-trained—one of the ducks actually pooped (排便) while sitting on my lap. But none of this took the pleasure out of holding them in my hands and touching their full chests.

That’s the magic of animals—you are refreshed again.
