Professor Anthony Hilton from Ashton University, UK, tested the rule with his students. They wanted to prove that food dropped for five seconds is less likely to contain bacteria(细菌) than if it sits there for longer.
For the study, Hilton and his students tested a lot of foods, such as bread, pasta, cookies and candy, to see how much bacteria they had when they made contact with the floor. They allowed the food to lie on the different types of flooring, like carpet(地毯), laminate (复合地板) and tile (瓷砖), for three seconds to 30 seconds.
Not surprisingly, the longer the food was on the floor, the more bacteria it had. And the type of floor where the dropped food landed had an effect. Bacteria are least likely to transfer (转移) from carpet, while they are most likely to transfer laminate or tiled surface after more than five seconds.
The study also found that the wetter the food, the more likely it was to pick up bacteria. Although most people are happy to follow the 5-second rule, eating food dropped on the floor still carries an infection (感染) risk. “It also depends on which bacteria are on the floor at the time.” Hilton told Forbes.

We already know that if we don’t move much, we get fatter, we get heart problems and maybe we get diabetes (糖尿病). But new studies have shown that it could hurt our mental (心理的) health too.
A study of 1020 Brazilian adults during the pandemic found that about 30% of them sat around for more than 10 hours per day. It reported that people who sat for too long often showed more symptoms of depression (抑郁的症状).
Another study looked at children. It found that each extra hour of sitting time at ages 12, 14 and 16 led to higher depression scores by age 18. Eighteen-year-old people who sat most often had depression scores 28 % higher than those who were more active.
Scientists are not sure yet about the link between too much sitting and depression. But according to Mats Hallgren from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, “Sitting for too long can slow blood flow in the body, including blood flow to the brain.” It might also affect the growth of neurons (神经细胞) in the brain. And couch potatoes might do other unhealthy things while sitting, such as snacking on junk food. All these may lead to depression.
The good news? It’s easy to overcome (克服). Aaron Kandola from University College London, UK, said “all types” of movement might help, even light activity.
“It is great to exercise and play sports,” said Kandola. “But anything you can do to avoid sitting for too long will help with mood, stress and thinking clearly.” The key message is just to move more, more often.

A team of Volkswagen (大众) designers and engineers developed a high-tech office chair that you can drive at a top speed of 12mph (20km/h).
Most high-tech office chairs simply prevent either water or kinds of pollution, or they are designed at a higher standard, especially about ergonomics (人类工程学). But Volkswagen’s recent take on a high-tech office chair shows just how low the standard is at the present.
The German car producer designed an office chair with a built-in motor and controls allowing the user to drive it at a top speed of 12mph. And that’s just one of the crazy ideas that built into this one-of-a-kind piece of office furniture (家具).
The main goal of this project was to put many smart parts that were found in a real Volkswagen car into an office chair, and the team did a truly excellent job.
Not only did they manage to put in a real motor and driving controls, but also a seat belt, honk, built-in speakers, and even tiny parts for the chair wheels.
The futuristic office chair also comes with 360-degree collision prevention sensors (感应器), a backup camera, a touchscreen display, headlights built into the armrests, LED party lights, USB charging, a small pocket for storing documents and the WV logo added into the headrest.
If you’re wondering about self-acting driving, Volkswagen says that its high-tech office chair comes with an exchangeable battery (电池), which offers a list of around 12km on a single charge.

When was the last time you used a phone booth on the street? With the rise of mobile phones, they have become something out of date. But Shanghai is trying to bring new life to the old phone booths by turning them into mini-libraries.
Shanghai plans to divide 263 phone booths in Xuhui District into six new types. One type will each offer 60 books for people to read or borrow. A second type will allow users to listen to audiobooks and even record their own voices. A third type will become “Celebrity Exhibition Halls (名人亭)”, showing old photos and works of famous artists like Ba Jin and Zhang Leping.
Shanghai is not the only city trying to save the old phone booths. The British care about them even more, since the red phone booths have long been a part of the country’s identity. The world’s first phone booth was built in the 1880s in Germany. But in the 1930s the UK painted them red and made them a special attraction in cities.
In recent years the country has come up with many ideas to help phone booths stay useful. The UK company British Telecom has added screens and free WiFi to some booths. Users can use them to surf online and search for maps and weather reports. The company also allows people to rent some booths to change them as they want to. Since 2009, more than 1,500 phone booths have been turned into flower shops, mini-cafés, art museums and even shower rooms, according to the Sina News. Besides, the town has made it into a museum to show visitors the local history. Today the phone booths is filled with photographs, ancient jewelry, and paintings, which anyone can stop in to admire. Every three months, they will change for a new theme.
Maybe in the future phone booths will become city attractions once again, but in a more creative way.

“Which is the right dustbin for my garbage (垃圾)?” This may be the most-asked question in our city since it started a new garbage-sorting (垃圾分类) program this autumn. The garbage is sorted into four types: recyclable (可回收的), dangerous, wet, and dry.
Recyclable garbage includes newspapers, magazines and books. Some mate (金属), like iron and copper, as well as glass bottles and other glass can also be recycled. Plastic bottles, foam plastic and rubber are all this group members except plastic bags. It’s easy to tell what is the dangerous garbage. It’s harmful to our environment. For example, waste batteries, drugs, medicine can cause different pollution (污染) and even destroy our environment. These kind of junk needs special safely processing (处理). The wet include the things like vegetables, fruit, leftovers, leaves and so on. Most of them came from kitchen, so they are called kitchen garbage. The dry contain two kinds. One mainly refers to Non-recyclable paper, such as paper cups, copy paper, toilet paper, etc. The other includes clothes, cigarette ends, dust, and shells. The garbage which doesn’t belong to the above three types will be always sorted in this group.
When learning about the four types of garbage, many people might beconfusedabout how to properly sort it. To help people figure this out, China’s tech companies (科技公司) are giving a hand. For example, if you want to know which dustbin your wet wipes (湿巾) should go in, you can just open a mini app (小程序) WeChat or Alipay and look for “wet wipes”. The app will give you the answer right away. Soon, you might do it in an easier way. Maybe you can just take a photo of the garbage and then be told where it should go.
This kind of technology (技术) is called image recognition (图像识别). It uses artificial intelligence (AI,人工智能). Many companies around the world are making garbage-sorting robots (机器人) that use this technology. For example, AMP Robotics in the US has made a robot that can sort food and drink packages (包装). By “seeing” pictures on the packages on the packaging, the robot will pick up the trash and put it in the right place.
The future of garbage-sorting looks good. But it’s not the best way. The best thing we can do is to make less garbage in the first place.

It was said that school should not start before February 17. The exact start time of school will depend on situations and further notices.
However, many parents are very worried that putting off the start of school may affect children’s studies. If they have such a long winter vacation, children will not learn any knowledge, read books or study at all. They may forget what they have learned before. Staying at home for a long time will make them keep eating, sleeping and playing, which seriously affect their physical and mental health.
In short, the close of school influences learning and develops bad habits, so how should we avoid these problems? Local education departments have also given a notice, that is, to organize online teaching and create a network platform(平台), where necessary courses will be shown every day, and online teaching will be given by excellent teachers of the subject, and students can learn at home through computer or mobile network. It should be said that such a method is very good. It can not only keep students indoors and not worry about the infection(感染) of the disease, but also make them study at home, improve their learning ability, and truly achieve “no suspension of classes”. Both the platform itself and the recorded lesson resources are more useful, and are welcomed by parents and teachers.
Of course, except for learning at home, it is also necessary to teach children about health knowledge, especially how to keep away from touching virus and other knowledge popularization; at the same time, it is also necessary for children to do some physical exercises or some games, which is good for physical health at home.
