I still remember when this day started, I was very happy. Not only did I have the chance to miss school, but I also got to sit in my dad’s taxi all day long and we would go to a restaurant for lunch.
But after only 20 minutes of driving around the city. I was very bored. I couldn’t read my book in the car as I would get carsick(晕车)and my dad didn’t like to turn on the radio. I got hot and uncomfortable. people wouldn’t get into his taxi because they thought he already had a passenger: me—so nothing happened. It seemed years before we went out for lunch. I actually started to miss school.
While the point of the day is to give kids a chance to experience real-life jobs and give them an idea of the possibilities(可能性) for their futures, I got something completely different from the day. I learned to appreciate(重视) school. Where else do you get to play with your friends, do science experiments, read great books and write stories all in one day?
Just as you’ll have to learn to love your job later in life, learn to love school now. If you don’t already, try spending the day at work with your dad.

But boredom is something to experience. Despite the lesson most adults tell you—boredom is for boring people—boredom is useful. It’s good for you.
If kids don’t figure this out early on, they’re in for(免不了遭受) a not-so-pleasant surprise in the future. Life isn’t meant to be full of amusements(乐趣).“That’s right,” a mother says to her daughter in the novel Where’d You Go, Bernadette. “You are bored. And I’m going to let you in on a little secret about life. You think it’s boring now? Well, it only gets more boring. The sooner you learn it’s on you to make life interesting, the better off you’ll be.”
People used to accept that much of life was boring. But things happen when you’re bored. Once you’ve truly felt bored, you find yourself on the route to discovery. This is why so many useful ideas occur in the shower, when you’re held captive(被困住)to a routine activity. You let your mind wander and follow it where it goes.
Of course, it’s not really the boredom itself that’s important; it’s what we do with it, when you reach your breaking point, boredom teaches you to make something happen for yourself.
Teaching children to endure boredom will prepare them for a more realistic future. One day, even in a job they otherwise love, our kids may have to check spreadsheets(电子数据表), or assist robots at a vast Internet-ready warehouse.
This sounds boring, you might conclude. It sounds like work, and it sounds like life. Perhaps we should get used to boredom again, and use it to our benefit.

②Every day, we spend time filling the Necessary Tasks Bottle with useful things, like making money, doing housework, and paying bills.
③We then fill another bottle with Voluntary Tasks. These are things we do for others, we may not enjoy, but we do them anyway. This bottle gets filled with tasks like taking children to activities, cooking family meals, and washing clothes for family.
④However, we often forget to fill the third bottle—the Happiness Bottle. This is the bottle we fill with activities that make us happy. Is your Happiness Bottle sometimes empty at the end of the day? Between doing all the Necessary and Voluntary Tasks, time flies by, and before we know, it is time for bed. We all have days like that.
⑤This is why each day we have to try to fill our Happiness Bottle. I fill mine by going to the dancing class. And I always leave classes more happily than when I arrive. This week, I had fun joining in a guitar practice in my neighborhood. We showed our musical talent and practiced music for charity (慈善). It was a time of fun, friendship and music-making. At the end of the evening, my Happiness Bottle was filled to top.
⑥The challenge (挑战) for each of us is to not let the day go by without filling our Happiness Bottle. That takes some planning. Many of us probably need to pencil happiness activities into our schedule (日程表): If we don’t do that, we will have to fill our schedule with those Necessary and Voluntary Tasks.
⑦Think about how your time is being spent. Are you doing enough activities that bring joy to your life? Or are the Necessary and Voluntary Tasks using up all your time? At the end of the day, hopefully we’ve done all we can to make sure that our Happiness Bottle is filled.
1. Which activity is a Necessary Task according to the passage?A.Having fun with your good friend. | B.Preparing a big dinner for your family. |

When angrily opening the screen door with my foot, I kicked back about a 12-inch part of the lower left hand corner of the new screen door. But I had no remorse, for I was happy to be playing in the backyard with my toys.
Today, I know if my child had done what I did, I would have scolded my child, and told him about how expensive this new screen door was, and I would have delivered a spanking (打屁股) for it. My parents never said a word. They left the corner of the screen door pushed out, creating an opening, a breach (裂缝) in the defense against unwanted insects.
For years, every time I saw that corner of the screen, it would constantly make me think about my mistake. For years, I knew that everyone in my family would see that hole and remember who did it. For years, every time I saw a fly buzzing in the kitchen, I would wonder if it came in through the hole that I had created with my angry foot. I would wonder if my family members were thinking the same thing, silently blaming me every time a flying insect entered our home, making life more terrible for us all. My parents taught me a valuable lesson, one that a spanking or strict words perhaps could not deliver. Their silent punishment for what I had done delivered a hundred strict messages to me.
