But the other four balls, family, health, friends and spirit, are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be broken. They will never be the same. You must understand that and try to have balance in your life. How?
Don’t look down on your worth by comparing yourself with others. It’s because we’re different and each of us is special.
Don’t let other people set goals for you. Only you know what is best for yourself.
Don’t give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.
Don’t be afraid of difficulties. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.
Don’t shut love out of your life by saying it’s impossible. The quickest way to receive love is to give it; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly; the best way to keep love is to give it wings.
Don’t run through life so fast that you forget not only where you’ve been, but also where you are going.
Don’t be afraid to learn. Knowledge is a treasure you can always carry easily.
Don’t use time or words carelessly. You can’t get them back. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift. Life is not a competition, but a trip, step by step.

“Do you need any help?” her father asked. “It’s almost time for bed.”
“I’ll be quick,” said Sustn. “I wonder what color to use.”
“Well, our stairs are brown.” said her father. “Thanks, Dad.” said Susan.
When she finished her picture, Susan began playing with her brush which was still wet. Suddenly, she dropped the brush right on the picture! There in the middle of her picture was a blob (污点) of brown paint!
“Oh, Dad! What will I do?” Susan cried. “My picture is ruined. And it’s too late to paint another.”
“Let me see,” said her father. “The blob looks just like a spot on a dog. All you have to do is to draw a dog around the spot!”
“That’s a wonderful idea!” cried Susan. She drew a dog around the blob of brown paint. “That looks just fine. You know, few things are as bad as they are seen at first. With a little imagination you can turn bad into good.” said Susan’s father.
The next day Susan went to school early. When the competition began, Mr. King said, “I’ve chosen three pictures, and I want you to say which one you like best.” The children did not like the first one. The next picture was on black paper, but the stairs were red. So it was not so good. Then Mr. King showed the third painting. It was Susan’s!
“The stairs are straight.” said Joe.
“Yes, and the brown paint shows up well on the white paper.” said Lucy.
“The little dog seems to belong there.” said Terry.
The children voted (投票) and Susan’s painting won.
“Susan had a good idea,” Mr. King said. “That little dog finished a good painting. It made the stairs seem real.”
Susan smiled. She could hardly wait to tell her father the news. He was right. With a little imagination you can turn something bad into something good!

Marina was terribly afraid of the darkness. When lights went out, every shadow (阴影) appeared to her as the most terrible monsters (魔鬼). Her parents explained every day with great patience, but it didn’t work.
One day her aunt came to visit. She was famous for her courage, and for having gone on many journeys of adventure. Marina asked her aunt how she became so brave and whether she had ever been scared.
“Many times, Marina,” said her aunt. “When I was small, I couldn’t stay in the dark for even a moment.” Marina became very excited.
“It was some blind children who taught me how to be brave. You know, they can’t see, but they are never afraid of the dark.”
“It’s true!” said Marina. “But why?”
“The secret is to change your eyes. Since blind children can’t see, their hands are their eyes. All you have to do is what they do. So shut the eyes of your face, but open the eyes of your hands. Tonight, when you go to bed and the light is out, if anything makes you scared, close your eyes, carefully get out of your bed, and try to see what is making you scared. But do it using your hands as eyes.”
Marina accepted, half worried and half decided because she knew she was already too old for this.
When her parents took her to bed, she herself turned off the light. After a little while, she felt afraid of the shadow again. Following the advice of her aunt, she closed her eyes, gathered up all her courage and went over to touch that mysterious shadow.

I’m the type of person who acts without thinking things clearly. I just do things as they come and hope for the best. That’s why I wasted all the spring playing and missed the chance to get a part-time job for the summer. What a terrible summer it was! My friends had jobs and money to buy things with. But I was too late. My summer ended up being long and boring.
My aunt Sara, is known in our family as a wise woman. She told me a story. It was simple, but it made me think about my care-free (无忧的) life.
There were three fish living in a small river. Their names were Make Plans, Fast Thinker, and Wait and See. One day, they heard a fisherman saying that he would cast a net (撒网) into the river in the morning. Make Plans was not worried. At once, he decided to hide and stay away from the danger. Fast Thinker was not worried. He was sure he will have a plan. Wait and See was not worried either. “I will decide what to do in the morning,” he said.
In the morning, the fisherman cast his net. By this time, Make Plans was far away, but the other two fish were caught. Fast Thinker pretended (假装) to be dead. Of course, the fisherman did not want dead fish, so he threw Fast Thinker back into the river. Wait and See was the only fish that was caught and sold that evening at the market.

On every packet of cigarettes (香烟) ,people are warned against the dangers of smoking: “Warning: Cigarette Smoking Is Dangerous to Your Health”. However, millions of them start smoking or go on smoking. Why?
First, facts show that families and surroundings (环境) play a very important part in influencing smokers. All those smokers come from smoking families or have smoking friends or relatives.
Second, films and TV plays also play a part. People watch their “heroes” on TV drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes. “Heroes” seem to fear nothing, neither killing themselves nor killing others with alcohol and cigarettes. If they are not afraid of the harm of smoking and drinking, why should common people be afraid?
Third, the simple warning on the cigarette packet does not influence smokers’ habits. Even stronger warnings ,like showing pictures of smokers who have died of cancer, don't seem to work.
Smoking is harmful to the smoker’s heath. Smoke may result in dark teeth and may cause bronchitis (支气管炎)and lung diseases. When the smokes spread into the air, it will make the air dirty and not good to other people, especially for the kids and old people. Smoking in public will disturb others and is not polite as well. Of course, to the ordinary family, smoking will cost a big money and is a heavy burden for the life.
Knowing and believing seem to be two different things. If smoking is really as harmful as doctors say, it is time for smokers to think about it and try to give it up!
1. What does the simple warning on the cigarette packet usually say?A.It says “Warning; Cigarette Smoking Is Good to Your Health” |

Colorado, the United States, holds a fair every autumn. An art competition (比赛) is part of the fair. This year’s winner was Jason M. Allen for his work Space Opera Theater. He won a $300 prize.
This result, however, made many artists angry. First of all, Jason is a game designer, not a painter. What’s more, Jason didn’t create the picture on his own. Instead, he had made it with Midjourney artificial intelligence (AI人工智能) program. For the first time ever, an AI artwork won first prize in an art competition.
In fact, AI art program has been around for years, such as Picas and Nightcafe, but Midjourney has a new tool. Users can create pictures simply by typing (输入) a few words into a text box. Allen typed some words into this program. It then made over 900 pictures. Allen picked his three favourites and made them better by using other programs. After that, he handed in all three of them to the fair.
You may think it is unfair. But Jason didn’t think so. He handed in his work under the name “Jason M.Allen via Midjourney.” That is to say, he made himself clear: His work was made through the use of an AI program. “I’m not going to say sorry for it,” Jason said, “I won. And I didn’t break any of the rules.”
The judges (评委) didn’t know Allen used AI to make his pictures. Now they know this. But still, they think Allen should take first place. Because they think his winning picture tells a beautiful story.

Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on the way, she did what she could do to help her 3-year-old son Michael prepare for it. She and her husband found out that the new baby was going to be a girl. Day after day, night after night, Michael sang to his sister in his mom’s turnmy(肚子).
Finally, Michael’s little sister was born. But she was in a very serious condition. The doctor told the parents there was very little hope. They kept the baby girl in the intensive care unit(ICU, 重症监护室). Karen was so sad. She decided to plan for her funeral(葬礼). Michael, however, kept begging his parents to let him see his sister. “I want to sing to her,” he would say. Eventually, Karen decided to take Michael to his sister. This may be the last time he sees her alive.
Michael looked at his baby sister. After a moment, he began to sing. In the pure-hearted voice of a three-year-old, Michael sang: “You are my sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray.”
Immediately the baby girl seemed to respond(回应). Her pulse rate(脉搏率)began to calm down. “Keep on singing, Michael,” encouraged Karen with tears in her eyes. “You never know, dear, how much I love you, please don’t take my sunshine away.” As Michael sang to his sister, the baby’s breath became smooth.

Computer games are very popular. It is natural to want to win, so playing against a computer or against a friend on the computer can be difficult to stop. “Just one more game,” often turns into another game, then another.
Computer games do have their advantages. They are excellent for training hand-eye coordination(协调).Surgeons(外科医生)today who played computer games as children are often more skilled than those who didn’t. Computer games can also be great for teaching students. The students are open to learning while playing and can study for longer than a teacher would be able to teach. Students can also learn at their own speed and not feel pressured(有压力的)to match classmates. And practice makes perfect.
But like anything else in life, things should be balanced. Too much time on the computer can hurt your eyes. Regular breaks(间歇)are needed. If students cannot stop playing computer games, they won’t do as well in other areas in their life-not just schoolwork, but in developing important social skills such sa how to talk with people and how to work with others as part of a team. And if they aren’t taking regular exercise their health will suffer(受苦).
Computer games have their place, but people must also remember to lead well-balanced lives.

One thing my father did when I was young still remains fresh in my memory today.
My father was a carpenter, and he often helped others build houses. Every time he finished building a house, he would pick up the broken bricks and tiles that others didn’t need, either one or two. Sometimes, when walking on the road and seeing bricks or stones on the side of the road, he would pick them up and put them in a basket to take them home. Over time, a mess of bricks appeared in our yard. I can’t figure out the usefulness of the things. I just felt that the small courtyard was left with no room for playing.
Until one day my father started to use these things to build a square room in a corner of the yard. Then my father drove the pigs and sheep that were raised in the open into the small house, and the yard was clean. Our house became the only one with a pig house in the yard in my village.
At that time, I just thought my father was great, and he built a house by himself. Because my family was so poor that it was almost a problem to eat, but my father did not give up, picking up bricks day after day, and finally one day he had enough bricks to build the house in his heart.
In the following days, the spirit of this thing has been inspiring me. When I do something, I usually ask myself two questions: One is what the goal of doing this thing is and the other is how much effort is needed to make this thing happen. After that, I must have enough patience, because I can’t pick up enough bricks in a day.
