“Oh, Dad! What will I do?” Susan cried. “My picture is ruined. And it’s too late to paint another.”

“Let me see,” said her father. “The blob looks just like a spot on a dog. All you have to do is to draw a dog around the spot!”

“That’s a wonderful idea!” cried Susan. She drew a dog around the blob of brown paint. “That looks just fine. You know, few things are as bad as they are seen at first. With a little imagination you can turn bad into good.” said Susan’s father.

The next day Susan went to school early. When the competition began, Mr. King said, “I’ve chosen three pictures, and I want you to say which one you like best.” The children did not like the first one. The next picture was on black paper, but the stairs were red. So it was not so good. Then Mr. King showed the third painting. It was Susan’s!

“The stairs are straight.” said Joe.

“Yes, and the brown paint shows up well on the white paper.” said Lucy.

“The little dog seems to belong there.” said Terry.

The children voted (投票) and Susan’s painting won.

“Susan had a good idea,” Mr. King said. “That little dog finished a good painting. It made the stairs seem real.”

Susan smiled. She could hardly wait to tell her father the news. He was right. With a little imagination you can turn something bad into something good!

Marina was terribly afraid of the darkness. When lights went out, every shadow (阴影) appeared to her as the most terrible monsters (魔鬼). Her parents explained every day with great patience, but it didn’t work.   

One day her aunt came to visit. She was famous for her courage, and for having gone on many journeys of adventure. Marina asked her aunt how she became so brave and whether she had ever been scared.

“Many times, Marina,” said her aunt. “When I was small, I couldn’t stay in the dark for even a moment.” Marina became very excited.

“It was some blind children who taught me how to be brave. You know, they can’t see, but they are never afraid of the dark.”

“It’s true!” said Marina. “But why?”

“The secret is to change your eyes. Since blind children can’t see, their hands are their eyes. All you have to do is what they do. So shut the eyes of your face, but open the eyes of your hands. Tonight, when you go to bed and the light is out, if anything makes you scared, close your eyes, carefully get out of your bed, and try to see what is making you scared. But do it using your hands as eyes.”

Marina accepted, half worried and half decided because she knew she was already too old for this.

When her parents took her to bed, she herself turned off the light. After a little while, she felt afraid of the shadow again. Following the advice of her aunt, she closed her eyes, gathered up all her courage and went over to touch that mysterious shadow.

Early the next morning, Marina ran into the kitchen, smiling and feeling relaxed. “The monster is my teddy bear!”

I’m the type of person who acts without thinking things clearly. I just do things as they come and hope for the best. One thing my father did when I was young still remains fresh in my memory today.

My father was a carpenter, and he often helped others build houses. Every time he finished building a house, he would pick up the broken bricks and tiles that others didn’t need, either one or two. Sometimes, when walking on the road and seeing bricks or stones on the side of the road, he would pick them up and put them in a basket to take them home. Over time, a mess of bricks appeared in our yard. I can’t figure out the usefulness of the things. I just felt that the small courtyard was left with no room for playing.
