Dance becomes risk

Could private dances be a solution to restrictions?

Students across Ohio were going back to school last fall. Many were learning that COVID-19 would affect (影响) their homecoming events.

Homecoming dances were being canceled or put off indefinitely (无限期地). Dancing cheek to cheek (脸贴脸) can cause COVID-19 to spread, which is clearly bad.

Many students and parents didn’t like this. But a few parents planned private (私人的) homecoming dances of their own. This had some health officials worried.

Karen Kolar planned the largest private homecoming event in northeast Ohio - a dance for 300 students. The dance was held in a church (教堂) and masks (口罩) were optional (非强制的).

Kolar said she wanted her son, who just started his junior year at North Royalton High School, to experience a moment of normalcy (正常). Kolar said she had a lot of support (支持) from North Royalton parents and students.

Dancing, even while wearing a mask, is risky during a pandemic (疫情), Summit County Health Commissioner Donna Skoda said. In Ohio, health officials do not have the authority (权力) to tell schools what to do during a pandemic.

Many northeast Ohio schools believed homecoming dances were too risky. Most were looking for other ways to celebrate.

For example, Nordonia High School kept the tradition of choosing a homecoming queen and king. And it worked on a way to celebrate homecoming without a dance.

Students at the school thought about a trip to the zoo, camping out on the school’s football field or watching outdoor movies. But in the end, they decided on a trip to an amusement park.
