Her whole body shook. It shook so much that it woke her up. She was still in bed and it had all been a terrible dream. A minute later, Barbala called her name.

I miss you so much!” Because I just have a little son, I knew it was a wrong number. I angrily replied, “You’ve dialed the wrong number!” and then hung up quickly.
During the following days, I got the same call several times. But I did not give her an answer, she still dialed my number from time to time. At last, I unwillingly answered the phone. I heard a weak voice of that little girl, “Dad, please come back. I miss you so much! Dad, I’m in so much pain! Mom said you were too busy to take care of me. But, Dad, please kiss me again, OK?” The kind of request was difficult to refuse(拒绝). I made a loud kiss on the phone and heard the weak voice say, “Thank you...Dad, I am so...happy...”
After that, I became interested in the girl. So I called back, and a woman answered, “Sorry, Sir. I am really sorry to trouble you. My daughter has suffered from bone cancer(骨癌)since she was born. And her father...died last week. I didn’t tell her the news. Poor baby! When she couldn’t stand the painful treatment(治疗), she would cry for her dad, who always encouraged her. I really couldn’t make her sad, so I gave her a wrong phone number...”
“How is your daughter now?” I couldn’t wait to ask.
“She has gone. I believe you must kiss her on the phone, because she went with a smile,” she said, “and I’m glad that she gets rid of(摆脱)the pain and stays with her father forever.”
I couldn’t keep my tears back. I didn’t know what to say, so I slowly hung up my phone wishing her happiness and health there.

Since I was a new student, not only in her class, but at the school she made my time there much more pleasant. I immediately began to like her. She was really funny and I knew that she liked me. She made learning fun. I remember one day for Christmas holidays, she taught us how to make ornaments (装饰物) from eggs. My parents still have some of the ornaments I made.
She made me the leader for many group projects and that made me feel special. I think that would make any child feel special, especially when a child is in a new place with no friends. She made me want to be like that. Not to pick a “favorite” student, but to make every student feel that they are special. That year, I received the Presidential Academic Award (美国总统学术奖). I was really proud and so were my parents.
Looking back on it, I think the reason why I did so well was that I felt I was important. Students do better when they feel they are important or loved. Mrs. Green always gets to know her students and forms personal relationships with them, which I will try to do some day. I just hope that there will be a student who finds me to be his favorite teacher as I found her to be mine.

Rushing into the ward (病房), I saw a woman with short hair lying on the bed in a mess, and in her arms a little baby was crying. As the woman turned around, I realized it was my dear mother. With tears running down my cheeks, I gave her a big hug. Then I noticed my little brother—a cute and small baby who was like a toy. Seeing him, I thought everything was just like a dream.
When my friends congratulated me on the birth of my little brother, every cell ( 细胞) in my body resisted (抵制), because I didn’t feel any joy. I felt so worried that I couldn’t imagine what life would be like living with a baby. Anyway, another new start of my life in a two-child family began.
At 5 every morning, I would be woken up by his crying. Then I had to play with him and try my best to make him happy. Yes, I had to act like a big sister. At first, I was tired of this, since nursing isn’t an easy job. But one day, while we were playing in front of the mirror, I smiled at him and suddenly he smiled back. Melted (融化于) by his cuteness, my heart was full of happiness.
All my tiredness was gone. I realized that living with a baby wasn’t always terrible. There was a moment when my father and I were dressing him while my mother was feeding him, and he suddenly stopped eating to look at me. A big smile appeared on his face. At that moment, we all laughed.
I’ve gradually found that life is more interesting ever since his birth. I also realized how hard my parents must have worked when I was a kid. I love my family.
The only-child days in my family are gone. I’m excited to start an unforgettable journey in my life with my dear brother.

Working in service industry myself, I noticed it. When it came to my turn to get close and order my food, I thought to myself, "What can I do to make her day nice, to touch her to make her smile?” I was watching her and considering what to do.
Surely there must be something that I could compliment her on. It was her voice. She was well spoken and had clear voice. Maybe I would be able to do something to cheer her up.
So after she took my order and gave me the same unfriendly attitude(态度), I said to her and smiled, "I must say you have the most amazing voice, madam. It is so clear, well-spoken and sounds so professional." I told her honestly that she had one of those voices that would be perfect for announcements or radio.
Hearing my words, her whole face lighted up. She smiled—this was the first time I had seen her do so. As I left and looked back, I noticed that the customer behind me received a different kind of service, a happier one. And it was all because of what I did. It was something so simple!
There was a time when this kind of thing would have embarrassed me, or I'd have been shy and nervous to say such a thing. Now I must say the words. Why? Because I have the power—the power to completely change someone's day by something as simple as a few kind words and being kind! And you have this power, too.

Many people believe the name comes from the 1840s because of the soot (煤烟) that was put out by factories at that time. There is also a 10-meter-thick coal seam (煤层) close to the surface of the ground in Black Country.
The aim of this trip was to get us prepared for a geography project about rivers. We also learned more about the history of England.
On the first day of our trip, we went to Carding Mill Valley near Birmingham and learned about the changes that can happen to a river as it flows downstream (顺流而下). Our teacher had given us a few lessons on how rivers work before the trip, so we were well-prepared for the project we had to do.
The next day, we went to the famous Black Country Museum where we learned about coal mining (煤矿开采) and the lives of the people who lived. A highlight of the day was when we visited a coal mine and watched how to make iron chain links (铁链节).
It was truly a happy trip. I enjoy this way of learning. I like how we got an opportunity to experience what we learned about in class and put it into real-life practice. It was a useful way to get us more interested in what we were learning about. It also showed us the importance of the journey when we're learning something new.
