I was in line waiting to pay. In line there were two people before me. A little boy was buying some rather strange clothes. He chatted with anyone who was interested in the clothes and soon we learnt that he was going to a kindergarten (幼儿园) party. He had done a great job of putting together interesting costurnes.
I noticed that the little boy was paying mostly with change. It seemed that he had robbed his pig bank (猪形储蓄罐) to do this shopping. However, the cashier told him he was short after counting all the money. The boy thought for a moment and said, “Please keep the shirt and I will come back with more money.”
It was clear that he had already used all the money he had and he was $ 8.00 short. The lady in front of me said, “Well, I could pay half of that.” I told the boy that I could pay the other half. We dug into our handbags. However, both of us only had ten-dollar bills(纸币) and we needed the cashier to get the change for us. Other shoppers began digging into their pockets to find some change. It was amazing and touching as all these strangers seemed to react(反应) with the same mind. All wanted to be of help. Within minutes the cashier said, “I have too much money.” The cashier didn’t need our ten-dollar bills. Then the lady in front of me, who had been the first to offer help, said, “Wait! I didn’t even get a chance to give anything!”
I smiled at her and said, “You did your share, because it was your idea and you started all this.” The little boy smiled and thanked us. We wished him the best and he left. I was left with a good feeling. I had seen the love and goodness of others all around me. The woman in front of me smiled and said, “It surely feels good to give, doesn’t it?” I smiled back and said, “Yes !”

【推荐1】Rain beat against the window, matching my mood. I should have known that my new job at the hospital was too good to be true. Throughout the day, rumors (谣言) warned that the newest employee (雇员) from each department would be laid off (解雇) . I was the newest one in the training department.

My boss appeared. “You probably know we're cutting back,” he said. “Administration wants us to offer outplacement (安排新工作) classes to help those employees find other jobs, showing them how to act in an interview, for example.” “Fine,” I answered unwillingly, not knowing what else to say.

I decided to go home early that day. In the hall, I met the lady who brought us cookies every Friday. She was a little woman with gray hair. Only her head and the top of her green apron (围裙) were visible over the cart(小车)loaded with cleaning supplies. At least she had a job!

At the final meeting, laid-off workers formed a line at the door. A colleague whispered, “I can't believe our Cookie Lady is being laid off. We'll miss her as much as we'll miss her cookies.” When the colleague spoke to her in Spanish, I knew my classes would be useless for her and I realized how much better off was than this poor woman.

I decided to do something for her. I wrote to a newspaper expressing how I felt about the unselfishness of the Cookie Lady who needed a job. A few days later, my article appeared in the newspaper and the Cookie Lady was allowed to stay in her position. On the same day, I received a letter, which seemed so unlikely that I read it twice.

“An editor of a local magazine likes your piece and wants you to call her next time you're looking for work....”

A.Good deeds have their rewards.B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.

【推荐2】After killing the Wicked Witch with water, Dorothy at once got the Lion out of prison. They went in together to the Yellow Castle to set all the Winkies free. The Winkies cried at the news.

From then on, that day was a holiday of food and dance. “If only the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman were with us, I’d be very happy,” said the Lion.

Dorothy decided to save them with the help of the Winkies. They travelled a day and a half to find the Tin Woodman. He was all broken. Dorothy cried at the situation of her old friend. The Winkies lifted him carefully and carried him to the Yellow Castle. Dorothy asked the Winkies to bring all the tinsmiths with all their tools and it took the tinsmiths three days and four nights to make the Tin Woodman into shape again.

When he walked into Dorothy’s room, he was as good as ever.

“If only we had the Scarecrow with us,” the Tin Woodman said. “I would be very happy.” “We must find him, too.” Dorothy said.

She called the Winkies again. They walked a day and a half until they came to the tall tree where the Winged Monkeys threw the Scarecrow’s clothes.

The Tin Woodman cut the tree and then they picked the clothes up and carried them back to the castle.

They filled them with clean straw and the Scarecrow is a new man.

The friends all cried. The Lion wiped his eyes so often with this tail that it became wet and he had to hold it in the sun to dry.

“We must go back to the Emerald City ,” Dorothy said. “Yes,” said the Woodman. “I will get my heart.”

“And I will get my brains,” the Scarecrow said. The Lion said, “I will get my courage.”

【推荐3】Fire can help people in many ways. But can also be very harmful. Fire can heat water warm your houses, give light, and cook food. But fire can burn things too. It can burn trees, houses, animals, or people. Sometimes big fires can burn forests.
Nobody knows for sure how people began to use fire. But there are many interesting, old stories about the first time a man or woman started a fire. One story from Australia tells about a man very, very long time ago. He went up to the sun by a rope and brought fire down.
Today people know how to make a fire with matches. Children sometimes like to play with them. But matches can be very dangerous. One match can burn a piece of paper, and then it might burn a house. A small fire can become a big fire very fast.
Fires kill many people every year. So you must be careful with matches. You should also learn to put out fires. Fires need oxygen. Without oxygen they die. There is oxygen in the air. Cover a fire with water, sand, or in an emergency, with your coat or something else. This keeps the air away from a fire and kills it.
