I noticed that the little boy was paying mostly with change. It seemed that he had robbed his pig bank (猪形储蓄罐) to do this shopping. However, the cashier told him he was short after counting all the money. The boy thought for a moment and said, “Please keep the shirt and I will come back with more money.”
It was clear that he had already used all the money he had and he was $ 8.00 short. The lady in front of me said, “Well, I could pay half of that.” I told the boy that I could pay the other half. We dug into our handbags. However, both of us only had ten-dollar bills(纸币) and we needed the cashier to get the change for us. Other shoppers began digging into their pockets to find some change. It was amazing and touching as all these strangers seemed to react(反应) with the same mind. All wanted to be of help. Within minutes the cashier said, “I have too much money.” The cashier didn’t need our ten-dollar bills. Then the lady in front of me, who had been the first to offer help, said, “Wait! I didn’t even get a chance to give anything!”
I smiled at her and said, “You did your share, because it was your idea and you started all this.” The little boy smiled and thanked us. We wished him the best and he left. I was left with a good feeling. I had seen the love and goodness of others all around me. The woman in front of me smiled and said, “It surely feels good to give, doesn’t it?” I smiled back and said, “Yes !”

My boss appeared. “You probably know we're cutting back,” he said. “Administration wants us to offer outplacement (安排新工作) classes to help those employees find other jobs, showing them how to act in an interview, for example.” “Fine,” I answered unwillingly, not knowing what else to say.
I decided to go home early that day. In the hall, I met the lady who brought us cookies every Friday. She was a little woman with gray hair. Only her head and the top of her green apron (围裙) were visible over the cart(小车)loaded with cleaning supplies. At least she had a job!
At the final meeting, laid-off workers formed a line at the door. A colleague whispered, “I can't believe our Cookie Lady is being laid off. We'll miss her as much as we'll miss her cookies.” When the colleague spoke to her in Spanish, I knew my classes would be useless for her and I realized how much better off was than this poor woman.
I decided to do something for her. I wrote to a newspaper expressing how I felt about the unselfishness of the Cookie Lady who needed a job. A few days later, my article appeared in the newspaper and the Cookie Lady was allowed to stay in her position. On the same day, I received a letter, which seemed so unlikely that I read it twice.

From then on, that day was a holiday of food and dance. “If only the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman were with us, I’d be very happy,” said the Lion.
Dorothy decided to save them with the help of the Winkies. They travelled a day and a half to find the Tin Woodman. He was all broken. Dorothy cried at the situation of her old friend. The Winkies lifted him carefully and carried him to the Yellow Castle. Dorothy asked the Winkies to bring all the tinsmiths with all their tools and it took the tinsmiths three days and four nights to make the Tin Woodman into shape again.
When he walked into Dorothy’s room, he was as good as ever.
“If only we had the Scarecrow with us,” the Tin Woodman said. “I would be very happy.” “We must find him, too.” Dorothy said.
She called the Winkies again. They walked a day and a half until they came to the tall tree where the Winged Monkeys threw the Scarecrow’s clothes.
The Tin Woodman cut the tree and then they picked the clothes up and carried them back to the castle.
They filled them with clean straw and the Scarecrow is a new man.
The friends all cried. The Lion wiped his eyes so often with this tail that it became wet and he had to hold it in the sun to dry.
“We must go back to the Emerald City ,” Dorothy said. “Yes,” said the Woodman. “I will get my heart.”
“And I will get my brains,” the Scarecrow said. The Lion said, “I will get my courage.”

Nobody knows for sure how people began to use fire. But there are many interesting, old stories about the first time a man or woman started a fire. One story from Australia tells about a man very, very long time ago. He went up to the sun by a rope and brought fire down.
Today people know how to make a fire with matches. Children sometimes like to play with them. But matches can be very dangerous. One match can burn a piece of paper, and then it might burn a house. A small fire can become a big fire very fast.
Fires kill many people every year. So you must be careful with matches. You should also learn to put out fires. Fires need oxygen. Without oxygen they die. There is oxygen in the air. Cover a fire with water, sand, or in an emergency, with your coat or something else. This keeps the air away from a fire and kills it.
Be careful with fire, and it will help you. Be careless with fire, and it will burn you.

I’ve been playing in rock bands since I was about 14 years old. It’s my favorite hobby in the world and I don, t think I’ll ever give it up. When I moved to China, I wasn’t sure what it would be like to play in a band here. Would it be hard to find people to play with? Or places to play at? As it turns out, Beijing is a great place to play music.
One of the main differences is that the music scene here is much smaller than those in most big Western cities. This might seem like a disadvantage, but I actually kind of (有点) like it. It means that most of the people involved, whether they are promoters (宣传人员) or musicians or Just music fans, know each other well. It’s like having a big family. I’ve met some amazing friends by playing music here.
Another big difference is that every practice studio and live-house in Beijing has the basic equipment (设备) for playing music. When I played drums in the US, I had to bring my whole drum kit everywhere we played. But here, I just bring my drumsticks and cymbals (钹). This makes it way more convenient to practice, record and play music.
And I’ve definitely had some unique experiences since I’ve been playing here. For one concert, we played on an outdoor stage next to a farm in the suburbs of Baoding in Hebei province. For another show, we played at a tiny bar inside of a huge shopping mall. These kinds of experiences are rare in the US. It’s definitely been a lot of fun to play music here.

We know that many animals do not stay in one place. Birds, fish and other animals move from one place to another at a certain time. They move for different reasons: most of them move to find food more easily, but others move to get away from places that are too crowded.
When cold weather comes, many birds move to warmer places to find food. Some fishes give birth in warm water and move to cold water to feed. The most famous migration (迁徙) is probably the migration of fish, which is called “salmon”. This fish is born in fresh water but it travels many miles to salt water. There it spends its life. When it is old, it returns to its birthplace in fresh water. Then it gives birth and dies. In northern Europe, there is a kind of mouse. They leave their mountain homes when they become too crowded. They move down to the low land. Sometimes they move all the way to the seaside, and many of them are killed when they fall into the sea.
Recently (近来), scientists have studied the migration of a kind of lobster (龙虾). Every year, when the season of the bad weather arrives, the lobsters get into a long line and start to walk across the floor of the ocean. Nobody knows why they do this, and nobody knows where they go. So, sometimes we know why humans and animals move from one place to another, but at other times we don’t. Maybe living things just like to travel.

Here is an example. In the UK, the total of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a household’s waste. In many supermarkets, foods are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.
Too much packaging causes serious environmental problems. The UK is running out of different kinds of ways for dealing with this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect (效果). Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The best way of avoiding this problem is to stop producing such unnecessary things in the first place. Food waste is another serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers (消费者) to buy more than they need. They seldom encourage customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue.
But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to connect packaging with quality (质量). We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. Is it true for all the products? In fact, more and more companies realized the importance of protecting the environment. They try to package what really should be packaged, including products in good quality.
As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize how many unnecessary things are being collected. We need to face the waste of our daily life. Although many people have taken action to recycle, we have a high mountain to climb.

But everyone needs to understand something about money: where it comes from, how to save it and how to spend it wisely. Too many parents don't take time to teach their children about money, and as a result, many of those children don't know how to deal with money when they grow up.
When should parents begin teaching their children about money? Experts agree that it's never too early. The more children learn about money, the more wisely they will be able to deal with money as they grow older. To begin with, parents can teach kids how to count money.
Next, parents can teach kids how to save money. For example, a kid wants a new bicycle. Parents can teach them to save part of their pocket money for that bike, while still keeping some money for ice cream and movies. In this way they will begin to understand the meaning of saving.
Also it's never too early to teach children different ways to make money besides snatching (抢)red envelope. For example, they can wash cars, clean gardens, look after babies. Sit down with children and talk with them about some ways they could make money. You'll be surprised and glad at the effort they will begin making.
Teach children about money when they're young and their future will be brighter.
