It seems that Britain is becoming a nation where everyone is saying sorry.Almost each person says sorry about eight times each day—and one in eight people apologize as many as 20 times a day.
As you may have seen, the British apologize more often than members of other cultures.A research shows that in many cases, people's love of saying sorry in Britain goes a little further than it does for Americans. For example, about 15 British people would say “sorry” while only 10 from the US would do this if they sneezed,if they corrected someone's mistake or if someone knocked into them.
In the old days,“sorry” was used to express regret and sadness for having done something wrong. But now British people use the word as a way of showing good manners. For example, they might say “sorry” instead of “excuse me”,“pardon”,“what” or “whatever”.
People in Britain also use “sorry” when they share the same feeling with others—so they might say “sorry about the rain”.
However,British people's use of “sorry” may make things very confusing(不清楚的) and difficult for foreigners who are not familiar with their ways. But actually, people in Britain pay much attention to the feelings of others. This is the reason why they apologize every day.

But a new study has found that fish have a much better memory than we used to think. Actually, certain species of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago. In the study, researchers from Mac Ewan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again. Researchers used computer software to monitor the fish’s movements. They found that after such a long time the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. This showed that they could remember their past experiences.
In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. An earlier study showed that they behaved aggressively(挑衅地)in front of certain fish, perhaps because they remembered their past “fights”. But until the latest findings, there was no clear evidence(证据) before.
Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to live in the wild. “If fish are able to remember a certain area with safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives at risks,” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.
For a long time fish were placed far below chimpanzees, dolphins, elephants, monkeys, dogs and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study has given scientists a new understanding of their intelligence.

They're neither medical workers in close contact with the novel coronavirus nor government officials who receive the latest updates of the situation - yet they’re keeping us informed of the development of the epidemic . They are the media , and their eyes are far-seeing.
Zhu Xingxin is one such member of the media : a photographer with China Daily . He visited Tongji Hospital affiliated with Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan on Feb 3 to report on the lives of medical workers.
Before entering the isolation ward ( 隔离病房) , Zhu had to put on protective gear ( 装 备 ) like the doctors : a protective suit , a surgical mask ,goggles ( 护 目镜 ) , disposable ( 一次性 ) gloves and shoe covers. He described it as " stuffy (闷热的)” with all the layers on .“I felt anoxi( 缺氧的 ) under the masks , ”he wrote on China Daily . " So I lowered my voice and slowed down my motions, trying to make myself feel better.
The eyes of the media are not just here to see, but also to scrutinize.
On Feb 9, for example , a bus in Wuhan carrying severely ill patients was caught in traffic with no one guiding them and no hospitals claiming them . The incident was witnessed by Global Times journalists and was soon reported online. It ended with all the patients being properly settled in hospitals and officials in charge being held responsible . But it's possible that without journalists this incident would never have been exposed.
Li Xueqing , a China Daily journalist , based in New York City , is also aware of the media's role as a watchdog ( 监督者 ) . She wrote a story last month about a group of Wuhan University alumni ( 校 友 ) in New York City who donated medical equipment to hospitals in Wuhan . She was impressed by how they managed to collect such a large amount of supplies and build an international shipping pathway in such a short time . Yet she was also disturbed by how all the complex ( 繁 杂 的 )paperwork and bureaucratic (官僚主义的 ) procedures added to their already heavy workload.
" I do hope that by writing about their stories , I'm helping things change for the better , said Li.
Indeed , the media is like a pair of eyes watching out for us as they report on the world's most important news.

The teacher’s plants were small, but still looked okay, while the doctor’s plants were much bigger and greener. One night, there was heavy rain and wind. The next morning, both of the neighbors came out to check on their gardens. The doctor saw that his plants had been ripped from the ground and were destroyed. But the teacher’s plants were not damaged at all but stood firmly.
The doctor was surprised. He went to ask the teacher. “We both grew the same plants and I cared for my plants better than you did. On March 5, during the first session (会议) of the 13th National People’s Congress (全国人民代表大会), Premier Li Keqiang delivered this year’s Government Work Report. Education was one of the highlights. “We will give attention to solving the problem of heavy extracurricular burdens (课外负担) on primary and secondary school students,” Li said during his speech.
Chinese parents often put a lot of effort and money into their children’s education. Many send their children to after-school classes. In 2016, China had about 180 million school-aged students, according to a report by the Chinese Society of Education. More than 137 million of them were taking part in extracurricular classes or off-campus (在校园外的) training.
To work out this problem, the Ministry of Education (MOE,教育部) and three other ministries put out guidelines on February 26 that call for more action to be taken to reduce ex tracuricular burdens. Their targets are private training schools that create excess workloads (过度的作业量) and pressure for students.
The guidelines are aimed at training schools which have no professional qualifications (资格) or pose (造成) safety risks, said Lü Yugang, an official from the MOE. He also said that reducing workloads for students should be a priority (优先考虑的事).
