What do you usually do after school? Most of you may have to finish homework. After that, some of you may take after-school classes. Do you feel like there’s too much work to do? Some of you may not have enough time to sleep. But there is some good news on the way that may cheer you up.
On March 5, during the first session (会议) of the 13th National People’s Congress (全国人民代表大会), Premier Li Keqiang delivered this year’s Government Work Report. Education was one of the highlights. “We will give attention to solving the problem of heavy extracurricular burdens (课外负担) on primary and secondary school students,” Li said during his speech.
Chinese parents often put a lot of effort and money into their children’s education. Many send their children to after-school classes. In 2016, China had about 180 million school-aged students, according to a report by the Chinese Society of Education. More than 137 million of them were taking part in extracurricular classes or off-campus (在校园外的) training.
To work out this problem, the Ministry of Education (MOE,教育部) and three other ministries put out guidelines on February 26 that call for more action to be taken to reduce ex tracuricular burdens. Their targets are private training schools that create excess workloads (过度的作业量) and pressure for students.
The guidelines are aimed at training schools which have no professional qualifications (资格) or pose (造成) safety risks, said Lü Yugang, an official from the MOE. He also said that reducing workloads for students should be a priority (优先考虑的事).

The survey was carried out by Action for Children, a children’s charity in the UK. They questioned more than 2,200 parents and found that parents are more likely to care about their children’s ability to make friends than their lessons. 33% of the parents put not making friends on top of the list of their worries about their children, while just 11% of the parents said their main worry is that their children will not be able to keep up with the schoolwork.
Everyone needs friends. They are a basic source (来源)of happiness and hope in our lives. However, the ability to make friends is different from person to person. To some people, making friends is easy, and to others it’s very difficult. We all have the ability to make friends. Unluckily, many people never reach their potential(潜力). Making friends is a skill, and the first step in developing that skill is to know how to get along with others.
Experts say it’s natural for some children to feel nervous if they don’t know how to get on well with others in a new environment. However, parents and teachers should help them learn some basic social skills such as sharing, helping, cooperation and communication.
“Teach your child to know the importance of having friends. Let him or her know having hundreds of online friends is not the same as having a friend he or she can connect and be with in person every day,” stressed an expert.

Why did mukbang first appear in South Korea? Jeff Yang, an Asian-American cultural critic(评论家), thinks that it’s down to “the loneliness of unmarried or uncoupled South Koreans”. He believes that eating on your own can be hard in a country like South Korea, where social eating is such a long tradition. However, eating alone is becoming increasingly common. It seems that mukbang gives people the feeling that they are part of something larger.
Alice Stride, a spokeswoman for the Campaign to End Loneliness, says, “It might bring someone great comfort to watch mukbang.” She adds that she would be worried if younger people were watching people eat instead of eating with friends or family, but for older people it could be a comfort. “If you can’t get out, if you’re ill for example, then perhaps that will bring you a great sense of comfort. On the whole, though, we would advocate face-to-face communication. It’s something that won’t change.”
“I would always encourage people to do whatever makes them feel better as long as it is a healthy habit,” says Ben Edwards, a relationship expert. “I doubt if mukbang is a healthy way to have a meal. But I think if people feel like watching other people eat, and it gives them some sort of satisfaction, I see no harm.”

②Many of you may think it is a terrible thing to study history. You may often wonder why we students should study something that has nothing to do with our own lives. If you think that way, I should say you are far from the truth.
③In fact, if we study history, we can learn quite a lot about personal stories and events of people just like us. The people who came before us helped build and develop the country we are living in. Some scientists found that plants can sense their surroundings (环境). You’ve all seen plants grow towards light which is called phototropism. Even if the top of them are cut off, the plants don’t change the direction. They sense the light and tell the rest of the plants how to grow then.
Some plants “talk” with each other by using “airmail (航空信)” to warn each other of danger. Researchers in England cut the leaves of cabbages. The cabbages then produce a tiny number of chemicals (化学物质) that protect themselves from some insects. Strangely, the cabbages which aren’t cut nearby also begin to give off their own different chemicals. That means they seem to receive a warning from their cabbage neighbors.
Most amazingly, plants have a great system (系统) of communication that can connect nearly every plant in a forest by fungi (真菌). It connects the roots of different plants to each other. Scientists call the system the “wood wide web”, similar to the Internet we use. Using the network, plants can communicate and share information and even food with each other.
Whatever the case is, plants are stranger and more wonderful than we can imagine.

Earth’s moon is a satellite. A satellite is a body that orbits(环绕轨道运行)a planet. All moons are satellites, and many planets have them. Some have many moons. Earth, of course, only has one. It’s a special moon, though. It’s the fifth largest moon in the solar system!
In fact, the moon is much smaller than the sun. But it’s much closer to Earth, so it looks as big as the sun. The moon is so close that you can see its dark and light spots(斑点)without a telescope. Men flew and landed on the moon’s surface many times by spacecrafts in the 1960s and 1970s. Neil Armstrong was the first human to step on the moon. He walked on the moon on July 20th, 1969. The flights to the moon have helped us learn much about it. Astronauts even brought rocks home with them!
There’s still a lot to learn about the moon. Now people still can’t live on the moon because it does not have oxygen or water like the Earth. But I’m sure that humans can live there one day in the future.

The tea bag was invented in 1908 by Thomas Sullivan, an American tea seller. He was sending out free tea in silk bags for people to try. People put the bags together with the tea leaves into the cup and added hot water. The tea tasted good, and people thought it was easy to clean the cup. They were not happy when Sullivan started sending them loose (散的) tea again.
Sullivan realized that he had a hot new thing in his hands, and he built a machine to pack the bags. As tea bags became popular, they were changed from silk to gauze (薄纱) and later paper. In 1952, Lipton Tea made the tea bag even more popular with its invention of the four-sided tea bag.

The continent of Africa has a long history and a rich culture, and this is shown in traditional dress. You often find three colors-red,gold and green in the clothing. The first color stands for the blood of millions of people who suffered as slaves(奴隶). The second is for the rich resources of the African earth, and the third represents the grasslands of home.
The patterns on the clothing also have a meaning. A common pattern is in the form of a cross“×”,which stands for“unity”. Another pattern is a rectangular(矩形)box, which represents“strength”.
Because clothing has a strong social meaning, people are very careful in choosing what to wear. It would be a serious mistake to wear the wrong clothing,or to wear clothes in the wrong way. For instance,in Ghana,a woman should wear her waistband differently according to the importance of the social event.
Traditional dress also tells us about everyday life. African designs are famous for loose(宽松的)clothing. The climate, with the hot sun and wide temperature ranges(变化),requires that the clothes should be comfortable for daily life.
Although many people wear Western clothes, particularly in the big cities in Africa, traditional dress is very highly valued(评价). This is because it has deep cultural meanings.
