Recently, researchers studied more than 55,000 adults. About a quarter of the adults have a good habit of running. The study found these runners were much healthier than non-runners. In fact, the runners lived, on average, three years longer than the non-runners.
Running may be good exercise, but it can be difficult on the body. Here are commonly shared ideas among fitness experts to lower the risk of injury for people who are new to running.
Take it easy.
Do not run too much, too soon or too fast. Most people get running injuries when they push themselves too hard. The body needs time to get used to increases in distance or speed.
Get good running shoes.
There is no single best shoe for every runner. You should find the shoe that offers the best fit and support for your feet. More importantly, you should have a new pair of shoes every 500 to 800 kilometers.
Take good notes.
Take time after each run to write down notes about what you did and how you felt. Look for things that happen again and again. For example, you may find that your knees hurt when you run sometimes. But perhaps you feel great when you have a rest between running days. These notes will help you make the best plan for running.
1. From Paragraph 1, we know ________.A.running is the best exercise |
B.running is especially good for the heart |

C.41,250 of 55,000 adults have a habit of running. |

Adler and Charles Van Doren provide a solution; Don’t try to read all of them, because most of them aren’t worth it. You can get the best ideas from most books simply by skimming them. Skimming also prepares you to learn more when you actually read the book.
There are two levels of Adler and Van Doren‘’s method of skimming. One includes looking through contents (目录) and conclusions of each chapter and making notes of what you already know or whether this book has information you want to learn. The second is known as speed reading, which is basically reading through a book really fast, just to get a surface-level understanding of it.
In order to get knowledge quickly, people try their best to study and take use of skills, but the obsession with reading faster and learning more is not completely right. Reading two books doesn’t make a person twice as learned as a person who reads one book twice(or even once, carefully).
Here’s how you can really use skimming to your advantage.
Don’t feel bad for skimming instead of reading. If the book was any good, it's likely to realize how important it is for you to read the whole thing when you skim the book.
When you read for inspiration that you can use to your work, you need to read documents (文件) for your work, or to improve your skills. Then there’s no doubt that skimming will be quite useful.
When you do find a book you like, don’t try to rush through it to the end. Slow down and take notes. Reread certain parts you don’t understand in detail. Connect the book’s ideas with other ideas or experiences you have.
Skimming is simply a tool to support the overall reading experience. It helps you choose the right thing to read. Learning is not about how many books you read, or even how fast you read. It’s about what you get from each of those books.
1. What can we know from Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren?A.Readers need to connect the book’s ideas with theirs. |
B.It’s impossible to read all the books for most readers. |
C.Skimming helps us to learn more when actually reading. |
D.We can get the best ideas from books simply by skimming. |
A.The idea which is wrong or untrue. |
B.The state of being crazy about something. |
C.The method that people use to solve problems. |
D.The act of disagreeing with something strongly. |
A.have the best reading experience |
B.reread a book as fast as possible |
C.feel regretful for reading part of the book |
D.judge whether they need to read the whole book |
A.The opinions on skimming from different people. |
B.The importance of reading books fast by skimming. |
C.The methods of reading uninteresting books by skimming. |
D.The suggestions of reading books effectively by skimming. |
Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟).
Don’t argue (争辩) with your parents. Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express yourself well if you are angry. Go someplace to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Michael bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days.
Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect (尊敬) to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!

A 10-year-long study of the elders in China has found that a healthy lifestyle is connected to slower memory loss even when people carry a risky gene (高危基因) for Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默氏症). Researchers followed 29,000 people aged at least 60 years for 10 years. About 50 percent of the participants were women.
At the beginning of the study in 2009, the researchers tested the participants’ memory with the Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT听觉词语学习测验). They were also tested for the most common gene connected with Alzheimer’s. Around 20 percent of the participants were carriers of the risky gene. The participants received tests in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2019. In the follow-ups, six healthy lifestyle factors were analyzed: a healthy diet, regular physical exercise, active social contact, active cognitive activity, non-smoking and never drinking alcohol.
The results showed that the AVLT scores continuously decreased over the 10 years. But the highest test scores were in the group with good habits and the lowest in the group where people usually have an unhealthy lifestyle. In a word, the participants with healthier lifestyles, even when they were risky gene carriers, had a slower rate of memory loss than the participants with unhealthy lifestyles.
The researchers said that they studied the relevance (相关性) between lifestyle factors and their effects for an entire 10 years and offered important information to protect the elders against memory loss. The results about the risky gene carriers are still positive because healthy lifestyle risks are related to a slower rate of memory loss, even though there is genetic risk.
1. How many women participants participated in the study?A.About 13,000. | B.About 15,500. | C.About 14,300. | D.About 13,500. |

Do you have friends or relatives (亲戚) who live in other parts of China? For example, perhaps you live in Beijing, but you have cousins in Chongqing. But luckily, if you want to call them on the phone or do a video chat with them, you don’t have to worry about which time zone (时区) you’re in. This is because almost all of China follows a single standard time.
But some countries have many different time zones. For example, the US alone has five different time zones. My hometown is in the Eastern Time Zone. But my friends in California are in the Pacific Time Zone, which is three hours behind my time zone. So if I want to call them, I have to schedule it with them ahead of time to make sure we’re both available (有空) at the same time.
Actually, there is one exception (例外) in China when it comes to time zones: the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. In this region, people either follow Beijing Time — the time that the rest of the country follows — or Xinjiang Time, which is roughly two hours behind Beijing Time. People in Xinjiang have to be clear whether they’re using Xinjiang Time or Beijing Time when making plans with each other.
For the first year I lived in China, I would often get phone calls from my mother very late at night because she forgot to consider the time difference. My hometown is exactly 12 hours behind China time! But by now, my family, friends and I have gotten used to the difference.
1. Which of these places doesn’t follow the Beijing time zone?A.California. | B.Beijing. | C.Chongqing. |

Richness was passing by Love in a big boat. Love said,“Richness, can you take me with you?”
Richness answered,“No, I can’t. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you.”
Love decided to ask Vanity(虚荣心) who was also passing by in a beautiful ship.“Vanity, please help me!”
“I can’t help you, Love. You are all wet and might destroy my boat,”Vanity answered.
