My sister’s ten-year-old son came for a visit at the weekend one hot July. And I had to make him stay inside by joining him in a game. An hour later, I suggested that we relax a while. He slipped out of the room and I was catching a few moments of peace and quiet.
“Look, Alice,” he said happily as he ran over to the chair where I was having a rest. “I found a kite. Could we go outside and fly it?”
Looking out a nearby window, I noticed there was not a breeze (微风) at all. “I’m sorry, Tripper,” I said, sad to see his blue eyes. “The wind is not blowing today. The kite won’t fly.”
“ I think it’s windy enough. I can get it to fly.” He answered, as he hurried out of the back door. Up and down the yard he ran, pulling the kite with a small length of string (绳子). The plastic kite proudly had a picture of Batman. He ran as hard as his ten-year-old legs would carry him, looking back hopefully at the kite. After about ten minutes, he came back in.
I asked, “How did it go?” “Fine,” he said, not wanting to admit (承认) defeat. “I got it to fly some.” As he walked past me to return the kite to the closet shelf, I heard him say under his breath, “I guess I’ll have to wait for the wind.”
At that moment I heard another voice speak to my heart, “Alice, sometimes you are just like that. You want to do it your way instead of waiting for the wind.”
And the voice was right. We wait for the wind only after we have done all we can. We must learn how to depend on it in the first place!

They did it to protect (保护) the gate of their home. Just then the rain came down. I ran into the house. As I watched out of the window, I thought, “What a pity! The ants will all die in such heavy rain.”
When the rain stopped, I went out to see them. To my surprise, they were still alive and as happy as ever. The earth at the gate of their home kept the rain out and they were busy again moving the earth away. It was late but they were still working hard. There was no one beside to tell them what to do. But they knew what they should do and they did it.
I think people should learn from the ants when we see something that needs to be done, we should do it. Thank the ants. I learned a lot from them.

Two men were travelling together through the forest on a lonely path. Before the travelling, they said they would help each other when there was danger. They had not gone far when a bear rushed towards them from some bushes.
One man was a good climber, and quickly climbed up a nearby tree. The other man tried to climb the tree but failed. Looking at his friend in the tree, he shouted loudly for help. The man in the tree was afraid that his friend under the tree would pull him down, so he didn’t give his friend a hand.
The man under the tree, seeing that he had no chance alone against the bear, fell to the ground and pretended to be dead. The bear came nearer and nearer. It made his blood run cold.
The bear came to him, lowered its great head, smelled him all over and touched him with its nose. The bear thought the man was dead, so it went off into the forest again without hurting him. After the bear left, the other man came down from the tree, and smilingly asked his friend what the bear had said to him. “For I could see,” he said, “that he put his mouth close to your ear.”

“Spell ‘champion’,” Scott told his elder sister.
“C-h-a-m-p-i-o-n.”
Unsure about it, Scott still cheered, “You’ll win the spelling bee (拼写大赛)!”
Lucy thanked, happy but worried, wondering if her dog Senator would be looked after well when she was away for a week.
“Dad and I will keep him perfectly!” said Scott, dreaming of getting his own pet if he could prove (证明) himself.
It was time to leave. Dad wished Lucy good luck.
“See you in a w-e-a-k,” Scott said.
“W-e-e-k,” Lucy corrected him and said, “Bye!”Each morning Scott woke up early to feed Senator, leaving a note to remind Dad. After that Scott continued to sleep.
A week later, Lucy returned and told the family she failed. Then she found her dog sick. Scott felt sorry but confused (困惑的), because he’d been a strict direction-follower.
They came to the animal hospital. After the examination, Lucy was angry, “A terrible stomachache! How could Senator put on two pounds in such a short time?”
Dad said, “I only fed him two scoops of dog food every morning.”
Scott shouted, “Dad! You fed him again? Didn’t you read my note? It says I’ve fed him!”
It took Lucy a while to understand before asking Scott how to spell “fed”.
“F-e-e-d? Scott! ‘Fed’ is spelled f-e-d. But your note says f-e-e-d, telling Dad to feed the dog!”
“So Senator was fed twice?” Dad asked.
Scott said sorry, “I just wanted to be responsible (负责的) so I could get a dog for my next birthday.”
“OK. I’ll teach you how to spell correctly and train myself for next year’s spelling bee,” Lucy said.

Lucy looked at me with fear because she was still a green hand in bike riding. I tried to encourage her to, but really, I was thinking- this is going to be a disaster. Not because I thought she would get hurt. More because I thought she wouldn't be able to pick up enough speed to balance, then get really discouraged and give up quickly. I imagined her throwing her bicycle to the ground and then crying all the way home.
But I was only half right. Lucy did have a lot of trouble riding the bike. She couldn't find her balance. She fell many times. At one point, she almost started crying because younger kids were getting angry that she was slowing everyone else down. But she did not give up. She kept picking herself up and trying again. She even took the bike off the track and into the main park to practice pushing off and picking up speed on a flat ground. When she felt more confident, she came back. Then she did it over and over again until she finally reached her goal of going around the whole track without falling once. Then she didn't want to leave and everyone was cheering her on.
This was not a day that ended in a disaster. It was a day when Lucy learned that perseverance(毅力) and willpower pays off.

Erik rang his grandparents' doorbell and silently wished the next four hours would go by quickly. He didn't want to give up his whole Saturday afternoon at his grandparents' house where there were no kids in the neighborhood.
"You're right on time," Grandma Bethany said, opening the door. "There's tea and cake in the dining room."
Cake? At least the first ten minutes would go by quickly. Erik hung his coat on the rack by the door and saw a strange looking key hanging on a hook. "Grandpa Bill, what's this funny key for?"
"That's a skeleton key. It opens the best room in this house" Grandpa Bill whispered, so no one else could hear. "It's the room I go to when your grandmother tries to make me help with the dishes."
"What's so special about the room?" Erik asked.
"It's a game room," Grandpa Bill said. "Take the key and see if you can find the room by the time I finish my tea."
Erik grabbed the key and stared at it. "A skeleton key? It looks old." Erik decided the oldest things in the house were probably upstairs. He headed past the dining room and to the stairs. Grandpa Bill sipped his tea and shook his head.
Erik knew that meant he was going the wrong way. He headed back to the front door where he'd found the key.
Erik thought about the oldest part of the house. "The basement! It's the first part that's built." He rushed to the basement door and looked at the lock. It was different from a normal lock. He put the key inside and turned it. With a click, the door opened.
Erik turned on the light and walked down the stairs. The basement was one large room with a pool table in the middle and a bathroom on the far wall.
"Great!" Erik said.
"Ever learn to play pool?" Grandpa Bill asked, coming down the stairs.
"No," Erik said.
"Well then, take a cue from the rack and I'll teach you."
Erik smiled. The next four hours were going to fly by.

This morning, I had an experience with a “rule breaker” during an English exam. I felt somebody was watching me too closely, I turned my head quickly and saw James, who sat right behind me. My eyes caught his and he said in a low voice, “Let me see your answers!” I gave him a smile, not sure if he was joking, and returned to my test. This time I moved a little more closely towards my own paper. “I can’t see!” James said in a low voice.
“What am I going to do?” I thought to myself. Cheating was against my beliefs. I curled my arm around my answers.
“He’s your friend and what are friends for?”
“You know it’s wrong.”
I tapped(轻敲) the top of my desk, hoping for an easy way out of this matter. No easy answer came. I just knew I had to do what I felt was right, even if it made James mad. So I guarded my paper so that he couldn’t see my answers.
When the exam ended, I stood there for a moment, searching for the right words to say to James. “Sorry, James, but you know me well enough to understand how I fell about cheating,” I said slowly and softly. “But maybe I could help you study before the next test.” “OK, Brain,” he smiled. “It might not be easy, but I’ll give it a try.”
I felt happy that my friendship with James hadn’t been destroyed(破坏). Mrs. Archer would be proud.

Mr. Swales wanted to find out what his students’ parents did. He had just called Jodie when some girls laughed. Shirley shouted, “Jodie’s daddy is a garbage man!”
Everybody in the class laughed out loudly, except Jodie. She felt her face turned red.
“Silence!” Mr. Swales said, “being a garbage man is a difficult and useful job. We all should be grateful to Jodie’s father.”
Jodie’s father came to take her home from school as usual, but she didn’t run up to him as she always did. When they got back home, Jodie went to her room and cried for a long time.
Her father came into her room, “What happened, Jodie? Why are you so sad?”
Jodie told her father what had happened and looked at him. He didn’t seem angry or hurt. “Well,”he said, “they are right. Being a garbage man is a dirty job. Tomorrow’s Saturday. Come to work with me, Jodie.”
The place really smelt too bad. Jodie wrinkled her nose. “Don’t worry, kid. In five minutes, you won’t smell anything,” said her father.
Everybody there was working hard, and they seemed to have a good time. Jodie’s father handed her a pair of gloves and told her to get the little plastic bags and throw them into the truck.
It was fun, but also hard work. Jodie’s arms soon got tired. At last, no more garbage was left and Jodie felt very happy.
“Garbage is dirty, but when we clear it away, everything’s nice and clean. You can make yourself happy only by making others happy. That’s why I like being a garbage man so much.”

Nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus, brave Viking seamen crossed the Atlantic Ocean. Vikings were the first Europeans to reach North America. They lived in a par of Northern Europe called Scandinavia. Most Vikings were peaceful farmers, traders, and talented workmen. But they were also excellent shipbuilders.
Viking ships were smartly and creatively designed. They were well-built with common wood and strong enough to sail hundreds of miles on the open sea. They were light enough to be carried over land. When there was no wind, the seamen could row the ships with oars(船桨).
