People killing elephants for their tusks has long been a problem worldwide. Although laws have been introduced to ban the selling of tusks, they have not been enough to save the elephants.
But the giant animals have now “developed” their own solution to stay safe from hunters----by not growing tusks at all.
Scientists found that among female African elephants, as many as 98 percent of them now have no tusks, reported The Independent newspaper. The number was 15 percent in 1998 and only 1 percent in 1930, according to the BBC.
But this solution has less been developed by elephants themselves, and more by evolution.
Evolution is all about natural selection(选择). When an environment changes, for example, animals and plants that can deal with the change will stay alive while others won’t. And for elephants, the change came when hunters started killing them for their tusks. As a result, elephants with big tusks couldn’t stay alive because hunters wanted to shoot them. Those born with tusks managed to stay alive and give their “tuskless” genes(基因)to their babies. As a result, more and more elephants are now being born without tusks.
But this solution, as effective(有效地)as it might be, is a high price to pay for elephants. Tusks are important and play a number of roles, especially for male elephants, including fighting with other males, lifting and digging things up.
This is why scientists hope there can be other ways to protect elephants against hunters. They believe that when they are less likely to be killed , elephants will be able to grow tusks again.
To David Cowdrey, head of Policy and Campaigns at the International Found for Animal Welfare UK, however, this is not very likely to happen in the near future.
“Unfortunately, it comes down to the markets,” he told The Guardian. “As long as people will pay high prices for products that come from endangered animal and plants, they’re going to have price on them and that causes the hunting.”

D.A tuskless elephant gives birth to more baby elephants than an elephant with big tusks. |
A.gradual change | B.sudden development | C.complete loss | D.rapid growth |
A.We should work out a better solution to protect elephants. |
B.People should pay lower prices for products made with elephant tusks. |
C.Elephants’ living environments will soon be improved. |
D.The key to elephant protection is stopping the trade in tusk products. |

But Heather Ramirez and her husband, from California, in the United States, make a living in an unusual way. They are self-employed (自雇的) snake catchers! They catch snakes, especially rattlesnakes which have gone indoors, and return them to the wild.
Heather describes her work as “protecting people from rattlesnakes — and protecting rattlesnakes from people!” In the area where they live, rattlesnakes often come face to face with people. They are found in stores, offices, houses and gardens. Heather explains that it’s not the snakes that are moving into places where people live, but it’s the other way round. The snakes lived in these places first and then the people built houses.
Most people who see a rattlesnake are feared. If you keep your distance, however, the snake won’t bite (咬) you. In twelve years as a snake catcher, Heather has never touched a snake. She doesn’t take the risk. She picks up the snakes with a special tool. This doesn’t hurtthem, but it keeps them at a safe distance so that they can’t bite her.
Heather and her husband are very busy because they are never off duty. Catching snakes is a full-time job and they don’t often have a day off. People can get to them at any time of the day or night. Not everyone can do this job, but Heather doesn’t want to do anything else. “I just love my job,” she says.

Brown bears, tigers and other animals move quietly through forests. They can’t be seen easily by their enemies. This is because they have colors similar(类似的) to the trees. For the same reason, polar bears that live on a land of snow and ice are white. Butterflies and bees living among the flowers are colorful like flowers. Soil(土壤)insects are mostly dark-colored and they live under the soil in a dark and wet environment. However, insects with colors different from plants can easily be found and eaten by others. So in order to survive, they have to hide themselves in the daytime and appear only at night.
Have you ever noticed some even stranger acts? The ink fish(墨鱼) in the sea can send out some very black ink when it faces danger. As the ink spreads over(散开) , its enemies(敌人) will find themselves suddenly in a dark world. At the same time the ink fish immediately swims away. That is how it keeps itself safe though it is not strong at all.

A lost Buddha (佛像) head statue, which recently made the journey back to China, appeared during the Spring Festival Party of China Central Television. It was its first public show after being successfully sent back from Japan on the second Saturday of December, 2020.
The head, dating back to the Sui Dynasty (581-618), was originally placed on the northern wall in the No.8 Tianlongshan Grottoes on the suburbs of Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi Province, according to a statement from the National Cultural Heritage Administration (国家文物局).
It was believed to be stolen and lost overseas around 1924, along with about 240 Buddha images that were robbed in the 1920s. This 44.5-cm-high Buddha head is the first among these stolen items to be returned from Japan.
The National Cultural Heritage Administration learned in September a Chinese Buddha head statue labeled as from Tang Dynasty (618-907) was about to be sold in Tokyo, and was thought to be a stolen piece from Tianlongshan.
The administration soon began the process of returning it home. In October, the auction house in Tokyo, whose board chairman Zhang Rong is a Chinese from Hangzhou, agreed to stop the auction.
After discussions between the National Cultural Heritage Administration, Zhang, and the local holder of the relic in Japan, the Buddha head was bought by Zhang and finally gave away to the administration.
The transfer ceremony (交接仪式) for the statue was held in the Chinese Embassy (大使馆) in Tokyo in November, and it arrived in Beijing in December.
After being shown on the Spring Festival Party, the Buddha head statue will be displayed in Beijing Lu Xun Museum from the first day of the Lunar New Year to March 14.

Andrew, from Edinburgh, had his limbs cut off after a snow storm at the top of a mountain in the Alps for five days, 15 years ago. He learned how to walk again within a year with the use of prosthetics(假肢) and has taken part in marathons(马拉松) to raise money for charity. But his greatest challenge is mountaineering.
Last year the man returned to his beloved activity, he wanted to stand on the top of the Matterhorn, a dangerous peak in the Alps. At least 500 people have lost their lives there.
Andrew tried to climb in August 2013. They started very early in the morning so that they would have time to come bake before nightfall. When they were about 200 meters from the top, the group was forced(被迫) to turn back because of the bad weather.
“It′s very hard to let go of a dream or a goal,” says Andrew. “But safety is the most important. Getting as far as we did was a great success in itself, and I feel very proud of that.” He is making plans for a second try.

The students of Southside School were asked to give their opinions about whether the school should run an athletic program or start a vegetable garden.
An athletic program is hatch better than gardening. How are we ever going to win anything at the Inter-School Athletics without proper training? At the moment, we only do athletics for one tam and the teachers train us. We need experts(专家)to teach us things like throwing and high jump. I know lots of kids say they're tot interested in competitions, but that's because they've never won anything. If they got better training and started winning things, they'd soon change their minds. People always say kids don't get enough exercise. Just because you do gardening outdoors doesn't make it exercise, so I don't sec how it matters. Athletics is much better for fitness and lots of kids can have a go at the same time. I don't think there would be enough jobs for everyone in a garden. In fact, I think a garden is a really bad idea. I don't know why we're even considering it. Liz, Grade 8 |
I think a vegetable garden is a great idea. We already do hours of sport, including athletics. And not everyone likes sport. Gardening is a great way to get exercise without worrying about whether you're any good at it, or whether you're going to win. And you really do gel exercise when you garden. There's digging, weeding and watering Even picking things can be hard work – pumpkins aren't light you know! There are lots of kids around here who don't have gardens so they can’t grow things even they want to. If you really want to do more sport, you can join a club. And think about it: What helps you to be good at sport? You need to eat lots of fruit and vegetables. If we learn to cook all the things we grow, the garden will keep us all fit and healthy and then we’ll be better at sport. Sam, Grade 8 |
A.Kids should take exercise. | B.Kids should eat vegetables. |
C.Kids should try to win more. | D.Kids should be outside more. |
A.Some students don't like getting dirty. |
B.Some students don't enjoy being outside. |
C.Some students already know how to garden. |
