Model United Nations(MUN模拟联合国) offers a fantastic program to the youth worldwide. In MUN, student delegates(代表) step into the shoes of ambassadors(大使) from UN members to debate the latest problems. Any student can take part in MUN, as long as they have the dream to learn something new and to work with people to try and make a difference in the world.
This year, MUN has become a hot topic in Futian middle schools because every school has formed an MUN club. The young members took up some global issues like vaccine(疫苗)safety.Soon to come was the 2018 Futian MUN Youth Conference (Ai) which took place in Shixia Middle School on December 18th. About 60 student delegates from thirteen junior high schools came together to listen, present, debate, and offer solutions to our planets most serious problem The theme was carbon emissions(碳排量) and global climate。
A team of four named Beyond, from Futian Foreign Language School, as one of the 14 teams from Futian schools. attended this conference. This team survived two rounds of MUN competitions before reaching the final. During the meeting, they played the role of British delegates. They made speeches and debated on how to reduce Carbon emission. They exchanged ideas with student delegates from other teams. They worked hard to find solutions to the global climate problems.
Futian MUN provides the students a platform to improve their English, critical (批判的)thinking and communicative skills. Schools are preparing students for the future.

Wong wanted to sail from Singapore to Polynesia, a trip which he estimated(估算)would take four months in his yacht(游艇). He made detailed plans of everything down to the weather and climate of all the places he would be visiting.
He set off from Singapore on February 2nd, 2020 with two friends who got off(离开)in Indonesia as planned in late February. And then the adventure began as he continued on to Papua New Guinea.
His autopilot(自动驾驶仪)broke just a few days later, which meant he needed to man(操控)the ship at all times-including at night. It would take thirteen days to reach the island.
However, two hours before Wong could reach Tuvalu, maritime officials(海事官员)found him and told him he could not dock(停靠)there. The fuel(燃料)was running out and the food was rotting. He convinced(说服)the officials to send over some food and a thousand liters of fuel for his ship. He then continued onward to Fiji and got away with Cyclone Harold, a storm that killed many people in the Pacific Islands.
Finally, he was allowed(允许)to dock in Fiji. Doctors tested him for COVID-19, which he didn’t have without doubt—he hadn’t seen another human in months!

Don’t know how to take care of your plants? You might need this little spider-like robot. It will chase the sunlight, run to shade, dance when it’s doing well and stomp (跺脚) when it needs to be watered.
It’s called the HEXA Plant, a six-legged machine created by Vincross, a robotics company in Beijing, China.
The robot planter will move toward the sunlight when it needs it,then will rotate (转动) when it enjoys the sun in order to absorb (吸收) its rays on all sides. When it needs to cool off, it will look for shade. It also plays with humans and dances when it is happy, moving its legs up and down. But it gets “angry” when it’s thirsty by stomping its legs.
With six legs, the HEXA Plant can move anywhere — in any direction and around any objects in its path. So sure, it can do a lot more for your plants than just stand there and look cute!
The inventor of the cute robot, Sun Tiangi, was inspired by a dead sunflower. He had no idea why it died — whether it was because of the lack of sunshine or water. That’s when he had the idea for the walking planter.
He says plants are passive. No matter whether they are being cut, bitten, burned or pulled from the earth, or when they lack sunshine, water, or are too hot or cold, they will hold still and take whatever is happening to them. They have the fewest degrees of freedom among all the creatures in nature. He wants to allow plants to experience movement.

There was a baker who also lived in this kingdom. Everyone agreed that he baked the finest bread. The baker had almost everything he needed except for a horse. If the baker had a horse, he could sell his fine bread from one end of the kingdom to the other.
One year the king made a new riddle that puzzled everyone. “I will give a prize to the person who can solve my riddle," the king said, "Whoever wins will have the pick of one of my strongest horses." He then drew a line down the middle of the courtyard. “Make this line shorter without erasing(清除)any part of it,” the king challenged.
People came from far and wide. They looked at the line and even put their noses to the ground.
“ How can you make a line shorter without erasing any part of it ?” the people in the crowd asked each other. Some of them tried. The dressmaker kicked dirt (泥土) over the line to hide it. The farmer poured water over the line to make it disappear. None of these worked, and the people went home unhappily. Everyone was puzzled about how to solve this new riddle.
A week passed, and nobody had any new ideas. Then one day the baker came into the courtyard with a bag of flour (面粉). “Your Majesty,” the baker said to the king, “ I can make your line shorter with erasing any part of it.” Then the baker opened his bag of flour. He poured out a line of flour right next to the king’s line. The line the baker made was longer than the king’s line.
“Now, good king,” the baker smiled, “your line is shorter.”
The people were very surprised. The king laughed and clapped his hands." You have won the prize. I will give you a horse of your choice."

【推荐2】The Vieira family moved to the United States in 1981. At that time, they decided to stop speaking Spanish at home and only communicate in English. This was because they were now living in an English-speaking country.
Now the Vieira children are adults, and they sometimes travel to Spain to visit their family and friends. But they cannot communicate with them. Unfortunately this is common. When people move to new countries, they often leave their own customs and mother language behind. This is a mistake because there are many benefits to knowing more than one language.
One advantage of speaking more than one language is that you can communicate directly with more people around the world. You do not have to depend on others to talk for you, so you’re more independent. People who know only one language must use others to help them communicate.
Furthermore, speaking a second language also allows people to experience other cultures and customs more effectively. Local expressions, vocabulary, and even jokes can have a powerful effect on a person’s understanding of another culture. So, knowing more than one language increases your knowledge of other cultures.
Finally, having more multi-language speakers improves relationships between countries. If people from different countries can communicate well, the world can become closer. Countries will then have more respect for each other and better understand each other’s problems.
The benefits of knowing more than one language are clear. In fact, there are no disadvantages. It is very sad that many people don’t try to learn another language. It is even worse when people let themselves forget their mother language and become silenced.
1. What is the passage mainly about?A.How to learn another language. | B.The reasons why people come to America. |
C.The importance of learning English. | D.The benefits of learning other languages. |
A.discuss the need for teaching a new language |
B.introduce the passage’s main characters to the readers |
C.describe the advantages of moving to another country |
D.show the problems of speaking only one language |
A.their mother language | B.more than one language |
C.a new language | D.body language |
A.make more friends | B.find a better job |
C.better understand history | D.communicate more independently |
A.Not knowing another language. | B.Forgetting one’s mother language. |
C.Refusing to learn another language. | D.Failing to communicate with others. |
Everyone talks about the weather, but no one can do anything about it. It is true. People usually begin their talks with “Isn’t it a nice day?” “Do you think it will rain?” “What a fine day!” Many people think they can tell what the weather is going to be like. But they hardly agree with each other. One man says, “Do you see how cloudy it is in the east? It’s going to rain tomorrow.” Another man will say, “No, it’s going to be fine tomorrow.”
People often look for the weather they want. When a farmer needs water, he looks for something to tell him it’s going to rain. He won’t believe anything else. When friends have a journey, they are sure the weather is going to clear up very quickly.
Almost everyone listens to what the weatherman says, but it doesn’t always tell us what we want, and sometimes he makes a mistake. Still he probably comes closer to being right than anyone else.
1. No one talks about the weather.2. People always agree with each other’s idea on weather.
3. People often look for the weather they want.
4. The weatherman never makes a mistake.
5. People cannot change the weather.
