The clock struck 12. "Oh, dear!" I cried, "ten more books to read before I can go to bed!" We pupils are the poorest creatures in the world. Dad does not agree with me on this. He did not have to work so hard when he was a boy.

As usual, Betty was sitting alone during break. As she sat, she heard a quiet “meow” nearby and found a little cat with a band showing the name “Lucky”.
She picked up the cat and went to ask her teacher if she could help the cat find his home as a class project.
“Are you willing to organize this project?” Mrs. Smith asked. She had tried for months to get Betty to speak up in class, but Betty had stayed quiet. Maybe this was her chance to shine!
Betty thought for a moment and then said, “Okay, we need to put up signs around the neighborhood and call the local newspaper.” Tony also suggested that they call the Animals’ Home. Soon students were busy drawing posters. Two students were making phone calls. Mrs. Smith was surprised to find Betty was so confident and really showed an ability to lead.
Betty, however, was not thinking about being a leader or being shy. Her mind was on finding this lost cat’s home.
The two students making phone calls came back and announced, “The Animals' Home said that a family reported a lost cat named Lucky! They said they’d call the family to come and get him!” The class cheered. Ten minutes later, a woman showed up and said with joy, “Thank you for returning Lucky! He was very ‘lucky’ to have been found by such a caring group of students!”
The class celebrated their success. Mrs. Smith celebrated, too. Betty sat comfortably with her classmates for the first time, laughing and joking. Mrs. Smith believed it was indeed lucky that Betty had found the cat—lucky for both of them!

‘Nerd camp’ makes learning fun
I have been going to the same summer camp since the fourth grade. It’s called the Center For Talented Youth (CTY, 天才少年营). I took a food science course (课程) in the first year, a fantasy writing course in the next and a forensic (法医的) science course after that. A few years later, I decided to try a new course offered by CTY at a college campus.
It was an essay-writing class at Sycamore College in New York. I flew to New York alone. I was very nervous to be away from my parents and my dog for three weeks, but I was also very excited.
Unlike other summer camps that are full of hiking, swimming and fun outdoor activities, CTY is a camp for nerds (书虫). It has activities such as “Star Wars battle” and “Harry Potter Q&A”. I fell in love with Sycamore’s campus in a small town called Saratoga Springs. I didn’t even feel the time passing there.
What I regret most is that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I will not be able to go back to camp. Although (虽然) it was just my first time going to camp on a college campus, it would also be my last.

Though there‘re many kinds of resources, with the fast increase of population and the appearance of many more factories, the more we use, the fewer there will be left for the future. Oil is getting less and less year after year. Though it may be incredible, it’s said that oil can last for only 50 years. Natural gas perhaps will last about 38 years.
Oil can be used in many ways and it's difficult to imagine what the modern world will be like without oil. But oil isn‘t easy to find and get out of the earth. Men must study the rocks. When they think the rocks in a certain place may have oil, a metal tower is built. A machine in the tower cuts a hole down into the ground. At the same time, a steel pipe is pushed down to stop the sides from falling in and to keep out water. At last if the men are right, usually the oil rushes up the sides with great force by the pressure of the gas in the top of the rock, and it rushes high into the air. If the oil catches a light, there will be a terrible fire. So a kind of cover is fixed on the top of the pipe, and the oil can run out through taps.
If we make a well near the middle of the oil field, we can also get gas. Such gas is sent through pipes to towns far away and used in houses and factories like coal gas.
Today oil is under pressure as never before. The price of oil keeps rising all the time. In many countries, the governments encourage people to save oil as much as possible.

My father likes cooking and that’s why we always have great food at home. So we don’t like to go to restaurants. He also likes to watch the TV news at least four times a day and knows all of the people who have ever appeared in new programs.
My mother laughs uncontrollably. She thinks stealing her purse is “a great international city experience”, because it could happen in any city in the world even if there was much money in the purse. Having a mother like her is a bit like having a sister. Perfect mothers are, of course, also experts in all fields, including medicine.
My brother decided to break the family tradition after several years as an airline pilot. He always tells me not to get discount (打折) tickets, but I think it is unfair. I should also say that he’s a great man, because he’s flying an airplane in the sky.
The family got even bigger when my brother married a lovely woman named Paulina. My family will be even bigger at the end of the summer, when I become an aunt.

But can you imagine printing food? Some scientists are trying a new way to get the dining experience by doing this. They hope that having a 3D printer in the kitchen will become as common as the oven or blender. Scientists say that they are easy to use: you simply have to choose a recipe (食谱) and put the uncooked “food ink” into a printer. You can also change the instructions to make the food you want. This means that it would be very quick and easy to create tasty and rich meals.
Using 3D printers to create your meals would also be saving the environment. There would be less need for traditional growing, shipping and packaging processes as food products would be a lot quicker and better For example, tree leaves and insects could be turned into tasty products! Printing food could also help people who have a swallowing (吞咽) trouble. They could program the printer to print softer kinds of foods so that they would not have difficulty swallowing them.
▲ It could take away many jobs, including those for growing, shipping and packaging food. Imagine a world where there was no need for growing or producing and the same tastes could be printed from an uncooked “food ink”. Besides, traditional restaurants might lose business. Also, we have to consider: is it really possible to get everything we need from them?
As we know, cooking and eating together with family and friends has long been a traditional and enjoyable activity. It is hard to imagine a world where the pastime of cooking is dead and meals can be created at the touch of a machine.
1. The writer gives the example in paragraph 3 in order to _________.A.show us how 3D food printing works in our daily life |

B.What’s more, 3D food printing could make people’s life much better. |
C.What’s worse, people would not get the food from the 3D printers. |
D.Anyway, using 3D printers could offer people more chances to find jobs. |
