The first chocolate was enjoyed by people in Central and South America many years ago. In those days, the coca bean (可可豆) was used to make a chocolate drink.
In 1824, Mr. Cadbury opened a small shop in the United Kingdom. He sold chocolate drinks. In 1831, he opened a factory to make chocolate drinks. Mr. Cadbury believed that the wine was bad and he wanted to encourage people to drink chocolate instead. A few years later, man invented a way to make chocolate bars (块), so people had the chance to eat chocolate instead of only drinking it.
At first, only dark chocolate was made. Milk chocolate came later and it was made by adding milk to the chocolate. Mr. Cadbury made their first milk chocolate bar in 1897. Their most famous chocolate, Cadbury Milk Bar, was made in 1905. It has been popular for over 100 years. The Cadbury factory still makes chocolate in the United Kingdom, and the chocolate is eaten all over the world. Every year, quite a few visitors go to the factory to see how chocolate is made.

Chinese food with a twist
I have lived in China for years. I sometimes miss the food back home, such as my mom’s cooking, and Americanized Chinese food.
But why would I miss it when I can get real Chinese food in Beijing? Well, American Chinese food has its own charms (魅力).
American Chinese food actually comes from Guangdong. In the early 20th century, thousands of Guangdong people came to the US. They built Chinatowns and brought along their own cooking style (烹饪方式).
But they changed their dishes a lot to appeal to American tastes. American Chinese food is usually sweeter and heavier than traditional Chinese food. My favorites are General Tso’s chicken (左宗棠鸡) and chow mein (炒面).
Every American Chinese takeout meal also comes with fortune cookies (幸运饼干). They are thin, hollow (空心的) cookies. They have a small piece of paper inside. You can read your “fortune” on the paper, along with your “lucky numbers”. However, when I eat takeout in China, I never get these cookies.

In those days, there were no flight attendants (服务生) to look after the passengers. Young men, or “stewards” helped the passengers onto the airplane and carried the passengers’ bags but they did not provide food and drinks. But then in 1930, a woman called Ellen Church invented the “stewardess”.
Ellen Church was born in 1904 on a farm in Iowa. She was a different child. She didn’t want to work on a farm or marry a farmer. She wanted a more adventurous (冒险的) life. Ellen studied to be a nurse at the University of Minnesota and then got a job in a hospital. For the next few years she stayed at the hospital and at the same time took flying lessons and got her pilot’s license.
Ellen was 25 years old when she first got in touch with BAT (Boeing Air Transport). She loved flying but she understood that airlines were a man’s world. Though women like Emelia Earheart were becoming famous, she realized it was impossible for a woman to have a career as a pilot. But she had another idea. Most people were afraid of flying because flying was still not a very safe way to travel. There were often delays (延误), many crashes and the bad weather made many passengers sick. Ellen thought nurses could take care of passengers during flights and BAT agreed.
The young woman from Iowa and seven other nurses became the first air stewardesses.
At first pilots were unhappy because they did not want stewardesses on airplanes, but passengers loved the stewardesses. In 1940 there were around 1000 of them working for different airlines. The early “stewardesses” had to be under twenty-five-year-old, single and slim. When a woman joined an airline, she had to promise not to get married or have children. It was a hard job and not well paid. They worked long hours and was paid $1 an hour.
In the 1970s, stewardesses were unhappy in their job and airlines had to make some changes. Since the 1970s, “stewardesses” have been called flight attendants. They are well paid and work fewer hours than in the past.

They move forward by one hour (12 p.m. becomes 1 p.m.) on the last Sunday of March and back by one hour (1 p.m. goes back to 12 p.m.) on the last Sunday in October. This is called “daylight saving time (DST, 夏/冬令时)”.
But in 2019, they will no longer need to do so. On Sept 14, 2018, the EU announced that it will stop practicing DST in October 2019, USA Today reported. The change comes following an online survey conducted in EU countries. Eighty-four percent of the 4.5 million Europeans who took the survey said they oppose (反对) seasonal clock changes.
DST was first introduced in Germany during the World Wars and became law across the continent (大陆) in 1996. It helps people make better use of longer summer days and save energy.
For example, with DST, people get up and go to bed an hour earlier during the summer. By having an extra hour of sunlight, people can save electricity, since they don’t need to turn their lights on.
However, after over 20 years of DST, people believe that the practice is out of date, especially since we now have energy-saving technology like LED light. “We are clearly headed toward smart cities, smart buildings and smart solutions which will bring much more savings than a change of the clock,” European Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic told Deutsche Welle.
Others have pointed out that clock changing can lead to imbalance (失衡) in our bodies’ internal (体内的) clocks and cause long-term health problems, Reuters noted.

How are you feeling today? If your head is uncomfortable because of a bad night’s sleep, or you’ve just got too much to do, the chances are you’re not in the best of feelings. If everything seems like an effort and you have a negative(消极的) opinion, the last thing you want to be told is to “be positive!” But having this mindset could get more advantages than you think.
Of course, developing a positive(积极的) opinion is easier said than done. When you’re feeling down, it is hard to be optimistic(乐观的). But a study in the US has found that people who are optimists are more likely to live longer than those who have a more negative opinion to life. It showed the possibility of positive people living to the age of 85 or more. So, maybe the thought of a longer life might encourage you to be more positive to life.
The study found that optimists may find it easier to control feelings and get less stressed. And as stress influences the immune system(免疫系统), it’s possible that optimists deal better with illness. Professor Lee, who worked on the study, said, “Our findings suggest that raising levels of optimism may lead to longer life and healthier ageing.” And she advises that pessimists (悲观主义者) could get better from doing things like imagining a future where everything turns out well.
But a glass half empty type of person can hardly see the world through hopeful glasses. If you’re the one among them, what could you do? Accepting that we all have problems and we’re not all the same can help. It’s best to celebrate the positives and not think about the negative parts of our lives.
People have been sharing their personal advice on keeping a positive way to life. Vicki Siska says, “Music feeds my soul, and I have good friends who care for me.” The saying goes that “a healthy body leads a healthy mind” which is perhaps why other people have advised doing deep thinking as well as staying healthy to help keep a positive opinion about life.

As he was digging, other helpless parents and the firemen arrived and tried to pull him off the ruins, saying , “It’s too late! They’re all dead! There’s nothing you can do !” To them he replied, “Are you going to help me now?” And then he kept on digging.
No one helped, however. He went on alone because he needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or he is dead?” He dug for eight hours…12 hours… 24 hours …36 hours …then , in the 39th hour, he pulled back a rock and heard his son’s words. He shouted his son’s name, “ARMAND!” He heard back, “Dad! It’s me, Dad! I told the other kids not to worry. I told them that if you were alive, you’d save me and when you saved me, they’d be saved. You promised, ‘No matter what happens, I’ll always be there for you!’ You did it, Dad!” “What’s going on there? How is it?” the father asked.

“Come out, boy!”
