The weather of Antarctica(南极洲)is cold, cloudy with heavy snow. Most parts of it are covered with ice sea for 10 months. Though it is dry and seldom rains, scientists in Antarctica have gotten their first crop of vegetables that they grew without earth. As one part of a plan, it will help astronauts to study fresh food about other planets. If the plan is successful, people will have some space to plant vegetables and fruit.
Researchers at Germany's Neumayer Station III say they have planted 3.6 kilograms (about 8pounds) of salad green vegetables, including 18 cucumbers and 70 carrots in a high technology greenhouse(温室),while the temperatures outside dropped below -200C. In this way, they can eat fresh vegetables in time.
The German Aerospace(航天航空) Center DLR, Daniel Dchubert, which was the leader of the plan, said on Thursday,“Scientists hope to get 4 to 5 kilograms of fruit and vegetables a week in May.Maybe the plan can turn into reality."
While NASA has successful grown green plants on the International Space Station, DLR's Daniel Dchubert says the Antarctic plan decides to produce a wider range of vegetables, such as tomatoes, onions and so on. People might grow them on the Mars or the Moon one day.
We know people depend on agriculture since the beginning of human history.
Without agriculture, people can't live for many years. At the same time, the development of agriculture needed some conditions, including environment, temperature, weather and so on. The technology develops quickly. People will plant the vegetables on the Mars sooner or later.

There are many questions about dreams. We dream during the REM(快速眼动) stage of sleep. We have about five periods of REM sleep during the night. The first REM cycle(周期) lasts about 10 minutes. As the night goes on, the REM cycle gets longer. By early morning, the REM cycle can last up to 90 minutes. Usually, it is in this last REM cycle that we remember our dreams.
Dreams change as people age. People may have several dreams each night. Some are like films and usually in color. They come to us over and over again. That may be because the dreamer is worrying about something and trying to find the answer. Sometimes we wake up with a good feeling from a dream. But often we can't remember the dreams clearly.
It is reported that too much dreaming is bad for our health. The more we sleep, the longer we dream. The mind is hard at work. That is why we may have a long sleep and still feel tired when we wake up.

People can easily come into their office buildings and check e-mails by using it. It can also help the police to find missing kids and bad people by sending the pictures taken from video cameras on the streets to the facial recognition system(系统). More and more shoppers use their e-wallets with the new technology to pay for things they buy in the shopping malls and many kinds of stores. In the fall of 2017, Apple even showed us an easier way to open the smartphone in no more than one second. However, what is facial recognition technology and how does the system make it?
At first, facial recognition technology checks the space between eyes, the eye color, the ear size and the lip thickness(嘴唇的厚度). Then the system makes a record of your face and saves it in the database(数据库). That is to say, if you want to get the right to go into some places or to do something, you just look at the camera and let your picture run through the database. Once the system checks your face, you can then get the right to go into the places or to do something.
However, is there any way to fool the facial recognition system? The answer is yes. Although it is an amazing technology, it sometimes doesn't work on babies, kids, and twins.

【推荐3】Life is competitive—some kids can do something faster or better than other kids. This might not seem fair, but all people are different and how well you can do something is different to others. This means there are “winners” and “losers”, and lots of people are neither winners nor losers but in-between. You can choose to be a good winner or an even better loser whether you are competing against others or yourself.
Being a “good” winner
No one likes a “show off”.
No one likes someone who takes all the praise for the efforts of a team.
No one likes people who put others down to make themselves look good.
To be a good winner you need to:
◆ Be modest(谦虚的).
◆ Thank those who helped you for their efforts.
◆ Keep trying to improve your skills.
◆ Aim for the next step up in whatever you are doing well.
Being an even better loser
Of course it’s disappointing to lose, especially if you are close to winning. Behaving badly or angrily, name-calling and going on about things being “unfair” won’t change the final result and will only make you look like a bad sporter. And no one likes bad sports either.
To be an even better loser you need to:
◆ Behave politely, nicely and kindly.
◆ Congratulate the other team.
◆ Keep any negative (消极的) thoughts to yourself—at least until you are away from the game.
It’s OK to let out your negative thoughts to your best friend or parents later. And if you don’t do very well in a game, try harder to learn for the next one. Improving yourself makes you a winner too.
1. What can we learn from the first paragraph?A.We are either losers or winners. | B.We should face winning or losing properly. |
C.We can do nothing about winning or losing. | D.We are always competing with others not ourselves. |

C.Anna thanks her coach for what he has done though she fails. |
D.Cindy shows her congratulations to other competitors even if she fails. |
A.let out his anger to his parents at once | B.express his negative feelings in the game |
C.try harder to improve himself in the next game | D.behave badly to his team members or competitors |
A.Telling us what we can learn from losing. |

All residents (居民): Rules for living in Parkrise Flats We all want to live comfortably and safely here, so here are a few simple rules which we think all residents should follow. Rubbish Rubbish collection is on Tuesdays. Please do not leave rubbish bags out before Tuesday as birds and animals can break into them and they smell. Washing There is a washing line for every flat in the garden next to the car park. Please only dry your washing on these lines, so it does not disturb (干扰) people in the ground floor flats. Cleaning The main stairs (楼梯) are cleaned twice a week by the Association (协会), so please try to keep them tidy and clean and do not leave furniture or bags on the stairs or in the hallways. Lights The main lights are on a timer and they stay on for five minutes when you press them. Please tell the Association if any lights are not working. Noise Residents should make less noise. Loud music, etc. can disturb other people and the Association will get in touch with you if you make too much noise. Safety Make sure the main outside door is always locked and do not let anyone into the main building unless (除非) you know who they are. Sometimes people try to get into the main stairs and then break into flats, so do not let people in unless they are coming to see you. Parking Each flat has one car parking space. These are numbered and are at the back of the building. Do not use another resident’s space. If you have more than one car, you will have to park it on the road. Do not park where you are blocking entrances (堵住入口). Problems If you have any problems and questions, please call the Association on 0800 096 9000. |

【推荐2】We often find that weekends and holidays feel so short while classes and work feel so long. Actually, though, we know that this is not true. But we still wonder where that strange feeling comes from.
In fact, this is one of the ways that we’re tricked by time, according to the website All That Is Interesting. The website lists several wrong impressions we often have about time. Let’s have a look.
First of all, emotions affect our time-keeping abilities: Negative(消极的)emotions, especially anxiety and boredom, make time seem longer because they make us concentrate more on the passage of time. However, when we are enjoying ourselves, we pay more attention to what we are doing and are likely to lose track of(忘记)time.
Here is another example. In 2007, a group of scientists carried out a test. In the test, people fell 50 metres into a safety net and were then asked about their experience. Although the experience took shorter than 3 seconds, the people thought it was much longer than it actually was.
This is because of the way our bodies reply to danger, according to the scientists. Our bodies produce a chemical called adrenaline(肾上腺素) when we are faced with danger. It allows us to concentrate better so that
we can stay alive. As a result, we are able to remember far more details over a short period of time, which makes it seem like time is going more slowly.
Another situation when we make mistakes about time is when we take afternoon naps. Have you ever had trouble telling what time it is after a long nap? That's because the best amount of time for a nap is 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, you enter a new stage of sleep called slow-wave sleep. If you wake up mid-way in this stage, it will take a while before you can correctly perceive(感知)time again.
Time can be mysterious and there is no way to control it. So perhaps the best thing to do is to make good use of every minute.
1. According to the passage,_________ possibly make people feel so long.A.weekends and holidays | B.weekends and work | C.classes and work | D.holidays and work |

C.take a moment before we can correctly perceive time again | D.take us 20 minutes to tell what time it is |

From tiny seeds(种子), great discoveries grow. A mini-garden carried on China's Chang'e 4 moon lander recently became home to the first plant to grow on another world.
This is yet another success for Chang'e 4. On January 2, the probe(探测器)became the first lander to touch down on the far side of the moon. This is the unknown face of the moon that is always looking away from us, so we never see it from down here on the earth. Although it is often regarded as the dark side of the moon, the far side actually gets as much sunshine as the near side. For example, when all we can see is a silver sliver of a new moon, the far side of the moon is in full sunlight.
Part of Chang'e 4's mission(使命)is to see how a moon base could be built for humans, including exploring(探索)whether humans could grow food and other plant products there. Chang'e 4 carried a mini-garden with air, water and soil with seeds planted in it. When plants shoot on the earth, their stems grow away from the gravity(the force that keeps your feet on the ground), and so they always shoot upwards. The moon's gravity is a sixth as strong as the earth's, so Chang'e 4's experiment was a test: would the earth plants know which way was up on the moon? Four days after landing, a tiny cotton shoot showed that they do.
Night has now fallen on the far side of the moon; sunlight will not return until the start of February. As a result, the cotton shoots died. Besides the darkness, the plants can't stand the cold(it can drop to -170℃ on the moon at night). However, the experiment is a success, since it has proved that it is possible for plants to grow in space.
