The first time I saw Kai, she was sitting in my front yard, hugging my dog Harley. She and her husband Sean had just moved into a small house down the road from us.I think she was drawn to Harley's friendliness, just as he was drawn to hers. From the moment I talked to her,I knew Kai would be a friendly friend. Her smile and good cheer made me feel better just being around her.
It didn't take long before Kai was beloved by everyone in our neighborhood.Children and adults visited her home often.Although she already had four cats, she also adopted (收养)a homeless dog.
When we visited her, she would kindly listen to all of our trouble and then say something so wise that we would leave her home with our hearts singing.Sometimes I would read her my stories and she would always encourage me to keep writing.
All of this time, though,Kai was slowly dying from cancer. But she lived each day with such cheer that I often forgot just how ill she was.Still, she died on a cold winter day with heavy snow falling down.
During the short time we had together,I learned so much from Kai about how to truly live. She taught us so many lessons about kindness, happiness, hope and cheer.

Last weekend, the four members of my family spent an enjoyable holiday at the Magic Kingdom—Disneyland. And one event made our visit seem truly magical.
We got to the front of the line at Space Mountain, only to find out that our little daughter Gloria couldn't take her ice-cream on the ride. We were so excited that we all forgot ice-cream was not allowed on the ride.
Gloria broke into tears and we all had no idea what to do. Then Murphy, one of the staff (员工) members, came over. She bent down and told Gloria that she would hold the ice-cream for her and give it to her when she finished the ride. Gloria said, “Promise?” Then she gave Murphy her ice-cream, and she completely enjoyed the ride.
Sure enough, as we walked out the exit, there was Gloria’s new friend with “her” ice-cream. Now you and I both know what happened, because we know that an ice-cream won’t last
twenty minutes on a summer afternoon in Florida. Murphy knew what time we would get off the ride; she went to the nearest shop and bought a brand-new ice-cream thirty seconds before we walked out the exit. Gloria said, “Thank you,” but I’m sure she thought it was the same ice-cream.
We know that someone tried hard to make our visit special. Thanks so much for going above and beyond!
Your fan,
Carmen Rivera

Scrooge: It will be many years before we can marry.
Girl: But we have known one another since childhood. Our parents have always wanted us to marry. I want to have children and raise a family. Why must we wait?
Scrooge: I do not have much money yet. Marriage is expensive.
Girl: But two can live almost as cheaply as one.
Scrooge: Nonsense. You need food and clothing. You have no money of your own. Anyway, I have no time to spare. I must work everyday until late to make money.
Girl: Money isn’t everything.
Scrooge: It is if you haven’t got any.
Girl: There is another man who wants to marry me. He is a good, kind man.

Shopkeeper: Tell me what you have to sell me.

Second woman: That’s very true. He got the death he deserved.

We have moved in our new apartment. We are getting to know the neighbors. Mr. Ramirez is a teacher at a high school. He lives across from us. He is polite. Shannon and Eddie are Australian. They live in the apartment below us. They are outgoing and funny. The library is just a 10-minute walk away. And there is a very pretty park across the road. It isn’t expensive. It is just perfect!

We moved into our new apartment last Thursday and it’s slowly beginning to look like home. The workmen have fit the carpet(地毯). And Dad has helped me with painting the living room and the kitchen. I’ve been in charge of my bedroom. Mom has been making the curtains(窗帘) all week and I know they’ll be great! I’m making Mom and Dad a special meal to say thank you! They’re arriving in 20 minutes. So wish me luck!

We are still busy finishing the house at the moment. The carpet fitters are coming tomorrow. After they put in the carpet, we’ll move in our furniture. When Dan fixes the bathtub, we’ll tile(铺瓷砖) the bathroom. It looks terrible right now. The plumber is coming on Saturday. When he puts in the washing machine and dishwasher, it will feel like home.

【推荐3】Plants are very important living things. Life could not go on if there were no plants. This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. So animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us.
If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering (不开花的) plants.
Flowering plants can make seeds (种子). The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit.
Most non-flowering plants do not grow from seeds. They grow from spores (孢子). Spores are very, very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float (漂浮) in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as seeds. When these spores fall on wet and shady (阴凉的) places, they usually grow into new plants.

In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too.All these are your happiness. If you notice them, you can see that happiness is always around you.
Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can't be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.

Do you want to have a doll that can talk with you? In the book The Ventriloquist’s Daughter, a girl named Liur gets a doll like this. But it doesn’t always make her happy.
Lin Man-Chiu, a writer from Taiwan, wrote the book. The book tells a loving story about Liur and her father.
Liur loses her mother at a young age. Her grandfather sends her father to a school in the US. Five years later, he comes back with a doll named Carola. This doll is quite special — it can speak like a person! However, Carola makes a lot of problems for the family.
After reading this book, I thought Liur and her father were unlucky. In fact, this story is about the writer’s own unhappy childhood. She had six sisters. But her grandfather wanted a grandson. Life was hard for her father, so he didn’t live with her and her sisters for a very long time. The writer didn’t like her father when she was young. But now she forgives him, because she understands her father had a hard life at that time.
After I learned this, I knew — everyone has demons (心魔) in their hearts, but we should do our best to defeat (击败) them.
