About 100 other teenagers were there. During the first two days I met a lot of great people. I was glad because I made so many friends there. On Sunday, the leader did an interesting exercise called "Chocolate or Toys". He asked a girl which she liked better, chocolate or toys. She chose chocolate. Then he asked her to choose again between chocolate and chocolate. Of course, she didn't have a choice.
This told us that sometimes we don't have a choice in life, and that sometimes we have to accept something, rather than complaining.
A girl stood up and started talking about her mom who was a drug addict(吸毒者) and how much she hated her mother. "I want a new mom," she cried. "Unluckily, you can't have one." the leader replied, "You have to accept the mother that you have."
This hit me hard. I realized that, for better or worse, my mom was my mom. I couldn't choose another mom, but I could try to make the best of the situation.

As I got onto the bus, I was so thankful to find a window seat. When I sat there, I saw an old man watching me. “Excuse me? Can I sit here?” His voice was deep.
“Yes, of course!” I said. He looked kind of nervous, or tired. He let out a sigh (叹气) and relaxed a bit in his seat.
“Hi, I’m Tony.” I said as I gave him my right hand to shake.
“George.” He looked at me for a couple of seconds before accepting my hand.
He was friendly and we talked about this trip. I knew he was 70 and headed to Birmingham to visit his son and grandchildren. I told him about my grandfather, and we both seemed to relax.
Our conversation was rudely interrupted by my stomach. I took out a sandwich and took a big bite. I noticed George was watching me eating. He probably was hungry.
“Would you eat with me?” I said as I handed him my second sandwich.
“No, no, I don’t want to eat your food. You will need that for your next coach.”
“No, I won’t. I will eat again on the plane. Plus, I don’t really like eating alone.” The determination (决心) on my face must have been very persuasive (有说服力的), because after a moment’s hesitation (犹豫), he nodded his head weakly and accepted the sandwich.
After eating, I decided that I should have a nap. I had an hour to kill before we reached Birmingham.
The sudden tap (轻拍) on my shoulder made me open my eyes. It was George. He told me we had reached Birmingham. I said, “Nice to meet you, George. I hope you have a great time with your family.”
As I extended (伸出) my hand for a final handshake, he not only took it, but cupped it in both his hands. “Thank you for being so kind to me. Safe travels.” He said and turned around to get off the bus.
I didn’t know what he walked away with that day, but I walked away with a sense of satisfaction. His words “Thank you for being so kind to me” kept ringing in my ears and I kept smiling to myself.

The study shows that dogs understand not only what we say, but also how we say it. “The results are very exciting and surprising,”says Attila Andics, the lead researcher from a University in Budapest.
For the study, the researchers first trained 13 dogs for months. The dogs had to sit quietly inside machines so that the researchers could check their brain activity. Then the researchers put headphones on dogs and played people's voices to them. There were four different voices. Some were positive words, such as“well done”. Some were negative words like “not good”. The words were also in different tones(音调). Some were positive, some were neutral(中立的), and some were negative.
Brain scans(扫描) showed the dogs could recognize words, as well as the tone of words, much like people do. The positive words with a positive tone brought the strongest activity in their brains' reward centers (反应中枢).“It shows that for dogs, a nice phrase can work very well as a reward, but it works best if both words and tones match,”said Andics.
They also found that dogs deal with meaningful words with the left side of the brain and tones with the right. People's brains work in the same way.
Andics said it gave us a new understanding of the language. That is to say, not only humans understand the meaning in words, but also other species(物种) do too.

● Plan your time carefully. When you plan your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule(日程表)of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will make you realize what is happening to your time.
● Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios or televisions! When you sit down to study, pay attention to the subject.
● Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
● Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day,
read that material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
● Develop a good attitude to tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be too worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many
others after you have tried these.

Each week Ed spent an hour in the special school helping the disabled children with their schoolwork, games and eating. Ed’s mother was a teacher, so he often met a lot of children. At first, Ed thought it would be scary to be with children who were so different, but later he found there was something special with those children.
Every Wednesday, Tom, Susan and Anna couldn’t wait to see Ed. Tom had to sit on the wheelchair. He was only able to say some simple words like yes or no. Susan, a deaf girl, always welcomed Ed with a big smile. As for Anna she was born with an illness, and it made her really small for her age. In a normal classroom, it would be common to stop children playing with something, speaking loudly or making noises. However, in that school, the teachers didn’t mind noises. They were signs of the children’s feelings.

When Claire Vlases of Montana was in Grade 7, she learned about plans to modernize her middle school. Claire asked the school board(董事会)to add solar panels to the project because, she explained, clean energy would be helpful to a really modern school.
The board liked the idea but said it could offer just $ 25,000-one-fifth of the cost. So Claire organized a group of kids and grown-ups who set to work raising the rest. They sold their second-hand books, put on talent shows and asked for donations(捐赠), even going door-to-door for them. One donated more than half the cost!
After two years of hard work, the group paid for the solar panels, which now provide one-fourth of the school’s electricity needs-saving the neighborhood thousands of dollars. “My favorite part about this project was that one person could start something small and then the project could grow and have a big influence on the community,” Claire said. “There are always going to be hard parts. When there’s a challenge(挑战)presented to you, you can learn from it and use it as chance to overcome it.”
