“Who shot(枪击) her?" cried Mr. Rogers as he rushed into the hospital three minutes after his ex-wife(前妻) died from a gunshot through her head.
“Just a minute, Mr. Rogers," said Detective Timo. "We'll have to ask you a few questions first. Although you have been divorced (离婚) for the past six months, you still live in the same house with your ex-wife, Mary Ann, right?"
"That's right," replied Mr. Rogers.

"The nurse will show you," said Detective Timo with a nod.
“A strange case," said the police.“This couple is a little too much for me! A man and a woman living together after being divorced six months!"
"Did anyone tell Mr, Rogers that Mary Ann died from a gunshot before he arrived?" asked Detective Timo, deep in thought.
"Nobody did. I ordered everyone who knows the details of the case not to discuss it""That's the point. You'd better detain (拘留) Mr. Rogers. If he didn't shoot her himself, I'm sure he knows who did."

There is the case of Ivan Mishukov, a 6-year-old boy from Moscow. Police found him living with dogs in the city's streets in 1998. There, he had been begging for two years. Ivan found food to feed the dogs. And in return, the dogs kept him warm and protected him while he slept. When he was saved, he could hardly speak. Luckily, he later joined the army and lived like a normal adult.
But not all children who are raised by animals can adapt to human society. In 1848, British soldier Colonel William Sleeman found a little boy living with many wolves in India. He took him to a village, taking care of him and trying to teach him to speak. But nothing worked. The boy still behaved like a wolf, eating raw (生的) meat and refusing to wear clothes, no matter how cold the weather was. About two years later, he got very sick and passed away.
Some animals are believed to have strong maternal instincts (母性本能), which guide them to care for young animals, even those of other species(物种). However, people need to know that children raised by animals may experience long-term negative effects when they enter human society, according to Daily Mail.

Two boys noticed this and without thinking twice, they took him to the hospital and left. After the doctor checked the old man, the doctor found that he needed an operation (手术) at once because he had a heart illness. The leader of the hospital said that the old man should pay his bill first, or he couldn’t have an operation. But nobody could found the old man’s family and nobody could pay his bill.

One day, Alice’s mother showed her an article which explained how difficult it was to get sick people through the countryside to the hospital in Africa. Alice wanted to help.
Alice knew that in North America, before there were cars, horses pulled heavy things on a travois(旧式雪橇)which was made of wood. Alice thought people in Africa could do the same thing. You need to wear a belt(腰带)to pull Alice’s travois. That means you can free your hands to carry or hold other things. Alice thought her travois was perfect for carrying food home from the market, as well as taking people to the hospital. After it was finished, she wrote instructions for building one. What is a gentleman? The girls have their ideas:
Huang Xiaoyu of Guizhou: A gentleman doesn’t always get angry. He wants others to be happy. He is always ready to help. There is a boy in my class and I think he is a gentleman. If I don’t do well in the English exam, he will say, “You will do better next time.” That makes me feel happy.
Chen Tingting of Shenzhen: A gentleman always says, “Ladies first.” When students clean up the classroom, he does the heavy work. He lets girls go into rooms first. Unluckily, when there is something to eat, the boys in my class always get them before girls!
What is a lady? Boys tell us what they think a lady is:
Wu Yifan of Dalian: A lady is quiet(安静的)and kind, but she’s not shy and she can talk about her ideas in front of others. To me, Han Xue, a film star, is a lady. She is pretty and bright. She does a lot for others.
Wang Lichao of Tianjin: A lady is not just beautiful but clever. She never says bad words. She is quiet and kind to others. I don’t think there is a lady in my class. Most of the girls are “wild beauties”, I think.

When storm drains get plugged up(雨水下水道被堵塞), rainwater builds up on the streets. It’s the leading cause of weather—related deaths in the United States. A team of local middle school students made a plan for solving this problem.
They are sixth-grade students Alyssa Neuber, Bianca Verri and Jose Pirela, all from Downtown Doral Upper School. With the help of their science teacher, they invented a device(装置) to warn city workers when and where there is a danger of flooding.
Bianca, one of the team members, said, “All of us have experienced problems with flooding, and we knew we had to do something about it.”One teacher at the school said, “Floods are common in South Florida, and students at our school hope their device will help.”
The students’ device uses a laser system(激光系统). When connected to storm drains, the device could warn the city workers if a drain is plugged up. Then the city workers could clean the drain at once.
Their project got support from many people. “Our classmates helped us in the beginning to find information about how to use the laser system,” said the team. “We each took on a task that we are good at and then started to work more closely with our science teacher. Class parents who were engineers also helped us a lot.”

In order to please Artemis, the goddess of the moon, the ancient Greeks arranged something special for birthdays. A moon-shaped cake was baked and decorated with lit candles. They thought the smoke from the candles would carry an offering(祭品) up into the sky, where they believed Artemis lived.
The tradition of lighting birthday candles continued in Europe, where candles were sometimes kept burning all day on a person’s birthday, partly as celebration and partly to keep away evil spirits. It was believed that the blowing out of candles represented one’s prayers(祈祷) to the gods. Some cultures believe it is a bad luck to blow out the candles until after the evening meal is eaten.
Traditionally, one candle represents a year of the person’s age. Some families prefer to add an extra candle for good luck. But that practice is improper when a very young child is celebrating a third birthday. Generally, older people’s birthdays are celebrated by placing just a few candles to represent, such as an eight for 80th birthday.
Today’s birthday candles are made in different shapes, like animals or flowers. One or two candles in the shape of numbers are sometimes used instead of lots of candles; for example, a four-shaped and a zero-shaped candle would represent 40.

Angus has a special illness and his IQ is lower than a normal boy. Six months ago, he started learning how to grow flowers. Now, he spends hours in the garden growing flowers, watering and looking after them. "Before working in the garden, it was difficult for Angus to concentrate in class and sometimes he didn’t want to go to school," said his mother Kim. "Now he can’t wait to go to school and he is happy every day. We can see Angus is able to work in a garden center in the future,"
Research shows that working in the garden improves mental and physics health. In the past, soldiers in Egypt treated their mental problems after war by working in the garden. Even now, some doctors advise people to work in the garden to treat their mental health problems. And doctors also advise young people like Angus to work in the garden.
The lives of hundreds of children in Britain with special needs, like Angus, have been changed by this special kind of education. When working in the garden, children have a chance to learn a lot of important skills, such as how to work with other people and how to take care of plants.
