4 . I arrived in Greece late because my flight was delayed (延误) for more than three hours. Luckily, my hotel hostess was still at the airport waiting to pick me up. We arrived at the hotel after a 40-minute drive. It was already 11:00 p.m..
As Greece was the last place on my travel list, I didn’t have much money left. I decided not to eat dinner. Instead, I would have a cheap breakfast the next day. Knowing this, the hostess hugged me, said something in Greek, and left. I guessed this was a good night hug and prepared to go to bed.
After a while, the hostess came back with some cheese, eggs, and salad. I was surprised by the benevolence. The meal was delicious. Although I tried to give the hostess money, she refused. All my worries of the day went away and I went to bed smiling.
Before I left the next morning, I hid €20 and a thank-you note under my pillow (枕头). I wanted to make sure it would be too late to return it to me when the hostess found it.
I loved the history, culture and natural beauty of Greece. The most unforgettable part for me, however, was that a friendly Greek gave a hungry stranger a big surprise.

Back in 2008, during the Beijing Olympics, Han Qian volunteered as a guide at the National Stadium. The experience inspired his passion(热情) for the Olympics and volunteering. Now the 35-year-old is an organizer at the Volunteer Department of the Beijing 2022 Organizing Committee. “Beijing is making history as the first city in the world to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics. I’m honored to take part in both,” said Han, “Being a volunteer is different from organizing them, but both are great experiences. Passion is necessary for a volunteer while being an organizer needs thinking and planning, especially as we’re facing many new challenges.”
Because of COVID-19, volunteers need to be quarantined(隔离) after the test events held before Feb 4, as well as after the Winter Olympics. As around 90 percent of the volunteers are university students, according to Han, this could influence their schoolwork, which is the biggest challenge. So, Han’s team has worked together with schools to support the students.
The cold weather is another challenge, as some events will be held outdoors. The outdoor volunteers need to have physical training, like 15-kilometer walks, to prepare for their work. Some necessary things like warmer pads will also be provided for them.
However, being a volunteer is not just about dealing with the challenges.
“_________________________.” Han said with joy.
