1 . I teach at UNLV three times per week. Last Monday, at the beginning of class, a young man asked me why I always seemed to be so cheerful.
His question reminded me of something I’d read somewhere before. “Every morning when you get up, you have a choice about how you want to live your life that day.” I said. “I choose to be cheerful.”
“Let me give you an example,” I continued. “Besides teaching here, I also teach out at another college in Henderson, 17 miles down the highway from where I live. One day a few weeks ago, I drove those 17 miles to Henderson. I drove off the highway and turned on to College Drive. I only had to drive another quarter mile down the road to the college. But just then my car died. I tried to start it again, but it didn’t work. So I put my car lights on, took my books, and walked down the road to the college.”
“As soon as I got there, I called AAA and arranged (安排) for a tow truck (牵引车) to meet me at my car after class. A teacher in the office asked me what has happened. ‘This is my lucky day,’ I replied, smiling.”
“Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day?” She was puzzled (疑惑的). “What do you mean?”
“I live 17 miles from here.” I replied. “My car could have broken down anywhere along the highway. It didn’t. Instead, it broke down at the perfect place: off the freeway, within walking distance of here. I’m still able to teach my class, and I’ve been able to arrange for the tow truck to meet me after class. If my car was meant to break down today, it couldn’t have been arranged in a more convenient fashion.”

Rob checked his watch one more time. There was only five minutes left. Time sure felt like it was moving slowly. How could five minutes take so long? It felt like a century, and his mouth was getting dry. Then, as he was looking at his watch once more, he heard a familiar voice, “Rob, I made it!”
Rob turned around and saw his friend Steve. He looked at his watch. Steve was on time. “You made it, and you’re on time, too!” Rob said impatiently.
“Of course,” Steve replied, “I really wanted to see this movie and the preview” “Well, let’s go then,” Rob suggested. He reached for his wallet then, so he could buy a ticket from the ticket booth. Where was his wallet? He looked around in alarm.

6 . There was once a famous scientist who made several important discoveries. Once he was asked how he was able to be so creative. He replied that it all came from an experience he had with his mother when he was 2 years old. He was trying to take a bottle of milk out of the fridge. But the bottle was too slippery (滑的) and he dropped it. The milk was running all over the kitchen floor.
When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of shouting at him or punishing him, she said, “Robert, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! I have never seen such a huge puddle of milk. Would you like to play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?”
So he did. After a few minutes, they cleaned it up together. Then his mother said, “This was a failed experiment in how to carry a big bottle of milk with two tiny hands. Let’s go out in the backyard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can find a way to carry it without dropping it.”
The little boy learned that if he held the bottle at the top near the lip (瓶口) with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson!
The scientist then added that it was at that moment that he knew he didn’t need to be afraid to make mistakes. He learned that mistakes are just opportunities to learn something new—which is, after all, what scientific experiments are all about. Even if the experiment doesn’t “work”, we can still learn something valuable from it.

“It just seems like all the good ideas are taken,” complained (抱怨) Ben. “We have less than two weeks to think of something interesting.”
“I know,” agreed Akiko. “We just have to keep thinking. Let’s sleep on it tonight, and then we’ll share any new ideas tomorrow.”
“Okay,” said Ben sadly.
The next day, Ben couldn’t wait to talk to Akiko. “I have the perfect idea,” he told her excitedly. “I was watching the evening news with my parents last night. There was a story about the falcons (猎鹰) in New York City.”

Very few people in the village could read, let alone write. Unlike them, Hannah was an adventurous girl. She loved to explore and would spend hours in the woods looking for new things.
One afternoon, Hannah came upon an abandoned cottage (遗弃的小屋). With curiosity, she slowly opened the door and was shocked by a room full of books! Shinning in the dust (灰尘), books were bathed in the warm sunlight just waiting to be explored. Seeing them, Hannah jumped up and down with excitement! She dusted the books and the shelves. 9 . In our daily lives, we often follow the same activities: getting up, going to school, eating and going to bed. Do they sound common? But what if something unusual or unexpected happens? That’s what I experienced one evening last week on my way home.
When I was riding my bike home in the evening, I saw a brown and white dog. He looked sad and lost, simply sitting in the middle of the road. He seemed unsure of what to do as he lay down and watched the passing traffic. Nobody seemed to mind the dog either, only passing him by at a distance (在远处).
At first, I also crossed over to the other side, hoping that somebody else would care for the dog. But realizing the dog might suddenly stand up and walk into traffic, I decided I must do something to help the dog.
When the light changed, I saw my chance. I guided the dog to a street corner, and encouraged the dog to keep walking until finally we both made it to the sidewalk. I called a dog shelter (收容所) group to let them know about the dog’s situation and stayed with the dog until the helpers came.
Sometimes we don’t know what we will find or see in our daily lives. Still, what matters is how we deal with it. Though I am usually shy in these situations, I am glad I found the courage (勇气) to help a dog in need, even if just for a moment.

Michael Morgan was six years old when his father moved a neighbor’s unwanted piano into their living room. “And that’s really where the whole thing started,” he says. “My mother and grandmother had played the piano a little bit, but my father just thought it was a good thing to have in the house.” Young Michael started piano lessons, but it was when he saw a conductor (指挥) leading an orchestra (管弦乐队) on television that he realized what he really wanted to do.
At the age of eight, he began reading The Joy of Music by conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein and got to know how to direct with a baton (指挥棒).
When Michael entered junior high, he joined an orchestra and band and learned to play many instruments. He was just 12 years old when his teacher asked him to compose and conduct a concert piece. And that was only the beginning. Throughout high school, he continued to develop his artistic talent, and after graduating, he headed to Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
Morgan works on offering kids a chance to explore classical music. In his hometown of Oakland, California, he started to volunteer in local schools, conducting student orchestras and talking with kids about music. Later, Morgan developed MUSE (Music for Excellence), a music education program for kids.
He brings musicians from Oakland Symphony (交响乐团) into classrooms to teach kids. He also works with teachers in after-school programs to teach students who can’t afford lessons.
Morgan says his work is mostly about providing young people with an entrance into music. “Playing instruments is a way for kids to express their feelings, and give them an interest they can carry with them through life,” he says.
