To prepare for the fifth Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1955, he practised so hard that he hurt his fingers and was nearly cut from the first round of competition. Finally, he took third place and won a special prize for his performance of Chopin’s mazurkas (马祖卡舞曲). Three years later, Mr. Fou left for London. After the deaths of his parents in 1966, Mr. Fou stayed abroad and became a well-known concert pianist in the world.

In 1981, the book, Fu Lei’s Family Letters, written by Mr. Fou’s father, mainly to Mr. Fou, was published and soon became a best seller in China.

“My father had a saying that ‘First you must be a person, then an artist, and then a musician, and only then can you be a pianist,’” Mr. Fou once recalled in an interview. “Even now, I believe in this order—that it should be this way and that I am this way.”

As time went by, Mr. Fou still played the piano for a long time every day even when his fingers grew weak. It was a love that he mentioned in interviews, with pieces of wisdom from his father.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了作者作为一个中英混血儿,经历着两种不同的文化,在饮食上也是妙趣横生。

3 . Since I grew up in England with a British father and a Chinese mother, I’ve enjoyed food from both countries ever since I was able to hold a knife and fork—and chopsticks!

Mum has sweet memories of the food from her hometown in Sichuan, and often cooks spicy dishes. Because of this, Dad has come to love hot pot! But there are still some dishes that Dad dare not try even after many years of marriage to my mother. He once told me he was surprised by what he saw on the table when he first visited my mother’s parents in China. He was even shocked (震惊的) at their wedding when he saw how the Chinese ate almost every part of an animal. Even today, he still does not easily take (忍受) to eating things like chicken feet.

But I enjoy that sort of food myself. Last week, I went to the butcher’s and asked, “Do you have pigs’ ears?” “No,” the butcher (屠夫) said, pulling at his own cars, “just these ordinary ones.” He must have thought I was joking.

Dad can cook a super “full English breakfast” of bacon, eggs, beans, sausages and toast with butter. Mum and I just have to find a way to get him into the kitchen! He also does a typical Sunday roast. We all love roast beef and vegetables, but Mum says we’d better not cat too much roast food as it may make us suffer from heat inside our bodies, according to traditional Chinese medicine.

I’ll never forget my visit to China. Mum encouraged me to try different kinds of food, and I did! I loved everything. But just when I thought I could deal with all Chinese food, I came across stinky tofu, a terrible grey thing that looked and smelt like a burnt sports shoe. “You needn’t try it if you don’t want to,” Mum said, but I gathered all my courage to take a bite and was amazed to find it wasn’t that bad. It reminded me of blue cheese, a similarly strong smelling type of food you either love or hate. Maybe I’ll fall in love with stinky tofu someday.

People say that one man’s meat is another man’s poison, but I feel at home with different food from both China and Britain. To me, there’s nothing better than a cross-cultural afternoon tea of English biscuits and a cup of Chinese oolong tea in a fine china cup!

1. What do you know about the writer’s taste for food?
A.He prefers British food to Chinese food.
B.He will never get used to Chinese oolong tea.
C.He enjoys British food as well as Chinese food.
D.He can deal with all Chinese food including stinky tofu.
2. What can we infer (推断) from the paragraphs 2 and 3?
A.Almost no people in England eat pigs’ ears.
B.The writer just wanted to play a trick on the butcher.
C.The butcher was more interested in pigs’ ears than others.
D.Pigs’ ears are popular in Britain, especially at their weddings.
3. What do you know about the writer’s father?
A.He isn’t really interested in cooking.
B.He likes easily prepared Chinese food.
C.He always enjoys making meals with families.
D.He likes all kinds of Chinese food especially hot pot.
4. What does the underlined sentence mean in paragraph 6?
A.A good diet can build up one’s health.
B.Some food can be harmful to health.
C.People ought to try different foods.
D.People have different tastes for food.

5 .

The Marionette, as soon as his hunger was appeased, started to grumble and cry that he wanted a new pair of feet.

But Mastro Geppetto, in order to punish him for his mischief (淘气), let him alone the whole morning. After dinner, he said to him: “Why should I make your feet over again? To see you run away from home once more? “

“I promise you,” answered the Marionette, sobbing, “that from now on I’ll be good…”

“Boys always promise that when they want something,” said Geppetto. “I promise to go to school every day, to study, and to succeed.”

“Boys always sing that song when they want their own will.”

“But I am not like other boys! I am better than all of them and I always tell the truth. I promise you, Father, that I’ll learn a trade, and I’ll be the comfort and staff of your old age.”

Geppetto, though trying to look very stern, felt his eyes fill with tears and his heart soften when he saw Pinocchio so unhappy. He said no more, but taking his tools and two pieces of wood, he set to work diligently.

In less than an hour the feet were finished, two slender, nimble little feet, strong and quick, modeled as if by an artist’s hands.

“Close your eyes and sleep!” Geppetto then said to the Marionette.

Pinocchio closed his eyes and pretended (假装) to be asleep, while Geppetto stuck on the two feet with a bit of glue melted in an eggshell, doing his work so well that the joint could hardly be seen.

As soon as the Marionette felt his new feet, he gave one leap from the table and started to skip and jump around, as if he had lost his head from very joy.

“To show you how grateful I am to you, Father, I’ll go to school now. But to go to school I need a suit of clothes.”

Geppetto did not have a penny in his pocket, so he made his son a little suit of flowered paper, a pair of shoes from the bark of a tree, and a tiny cap from a bit of dough.

Pinocchio ran to look at himself in a bowl of water, and he felt so happy that he said proudly: “Now I look like a gentleman.”

“Truly,” answered Geppetto. “But remember that fine clothes do not make the man unless they be neat and clean.”

“Very true,” answered Pinocchio, “but, in order to go to school, I still need something very important.”

“What is it?”

“An A-B-C book.”

Putting on his old coat, full of darns and patches (补丁), he ran out of the house without another word. After a while he returned. In his hands, he had the A-B-C book for his son, but the old coat was gone. The poor fellow was in his shirt sleeves and the day was cold.

“Where’s your coat, Father?”

“I have sold it.”

“Why did you sell it?”

“It’s too warm.”

Pinocchio understood the answer in a twinkling, and, unable to restrain his tears, he jumped on his father’s neck and kissed him over and over.

文章大意:本文介绍一位聪明的法官帮助一位农民解决了问题的故事。

6 . Long ago, there was a judge who was famous throughout the land. When two people argued, the judge was always able to find a solution that was fair to both people, whether they were rich or poor.

One day, the judge went to a busy market. Merchants (商人) were selling live chickens, fruits, vegetables, and just about anything else you could think of. As he walked through the market, the judge saw that a large crowd had gathered outside a shop that sold live chickens. The judge walked near the crowd and asked a woman what was going on.

“A poor farmer was carrying a heavy sack (麻布大袋),” said the woman. “He accidentally fell down and dropped the sack on a chicken, killing it. The chicken belonged to the rich and greedy merchant who owns this shop,” she said, pointing to the shop.

The judge could hear two men shouting at each other. “It was lucky I was passing by,” thought the judge. “There is clearly an argument going on, and I am going to solve it.”

“Excuse me!” said the judge in a loud voice to the crowd. “Please let me through.” ①When people turned and saw the judge, they quickly moved aside to let him pass through.

The two men who were arguing saw the judge coming near. ②Then they stopped shouting and bowed to the judge. “Please help us solve our argument,” they said.

“Tell me what happened,” the judge said to the merchant who owned the shop that sold chickens.

“This farmer killed one of my chickens,” said the merchant. “Now he must pay for it!”

The judge asked to see the dead chicken. “It is quite a small young chicken,” said the judge.

“That is true,” said the merchant. “But in another two years that chicken would have grown large and fat. I can get 100 coins for a large, fat chicken. This farmer owes me 100 coins!”

The farmer was too afraid to speak. A hundred coins was a huge amount of money for him. Everyone in the town, including the judge, knew the farmer couldn’t make enough money to buy clothes for his many children.

“I order you to pay this merchant 100 coins,” the judge said to the farmer. ④The crowd stood there with their mouth open in surprise. How could the farmer ever pay? The greedy merchant was overjoyed.

The judge turned to the merchant. “How much grain does a chicken eat in two years?” asked the judge.

“One large sack of grain,” said the merchant. He exaggerated (夸张) to prove the high price he charged for his dead chicken.

“By killing this chicken, the farmer has saved you a large sack of grain,” said the judge. “I order you to give the sack of grain you have saved to the farmer.”

The merchant turned pale and hung his head. A large sack of grain was worth much more than 100 coins.

“As you wish,” said the judge, who was seen to smile as he walked away.

If you are looking to get a better understanding of the world around you, chemistry is the perfect subject to study. It’s a study of matter (物质), its properties — ways in which it behaves in special conditions, and how it interacts with everything around it. At the heart of all the discoveries, such as medicine, cooking, and several other areas, is one important table that organizes elements based on their atomic number and chemical properties: the periodic table.

Although the first periodic table was published in 1869, it was a work in progress for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

Since ancient times, people have been interested in elements such as gold, tin, iron and copper (which are written as Au, Sn, Fe and Cu in the table) in their natural forms. They were dug up from the ground and used to make jewelry, guns, coins, and many other things. Over time, people became more curious about these metals and how they were made up. In ancient Greece, Aristotle and other philosophers said things were made from the elements of earth, water, fire and air. For years, this idea was accepted. Then people began to consider this idea again during the Age of Enlightenment.

In 1661, Irish scientist Robert Boyle described an element as something that “cannot be broken down into a simpler matter by a chemical reaction”. Over a century later, Antone-Laurent de Lavoisier, Father of Chemistry, would publish the first modern textbook on chemistry. In it, he listed some matter which he believed should be divided as elements into two groups: metals and non-metals. Although his work wasn’t completely correct, it represented a big step forward at that time.

Over the next century, scientists started to divide the elements into different groups depending on their properties and atomic weights. However, it is Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev who is usually believed as the first person to make a periodic table. Although other scientists had handed in tables, they were finally refused by the scientific community because they were short of details. Mendeleev put all of the elements in a proper order according to their atomic mass. He was even smart enough to leave empty spaces for elements which hadn’t been discovered at the time. Although Mendeleev’s periodic table wasn’t perfect, it set the way or order which is similar to the one used today.

1. Why did people first become interested in elements?
A.Many people wanted to be like a scientist.
B.They wanted to use metal s to make things.
C.People in ancient times was crazy about science.
D.They thought chemistry are useful for everything.

A.to require us to care about the history
B.to encourage us to discover and think
C.to advise us to respect the great chemist
D.to remind us to pay attention to his contribution
3. What can we learn from the passage?
A.The influence of chemistry is the easiest to see in the real world.
B.Aristotle was spoken highly of during the Age of Enlightenment.
C.Mendeleev is usually considered the first person to create the table.
D.Robert Boyle was the one who wrote down every element on Earth.
4. This passage is mainly about ________.
A.what the table is likeB.why the table is popular
C.how the table developedD.when the table first appeared

Jim didn’t want to write a stupid essay about his summer vacation. So he gave up on the assignment and wrote what he wanted to. Not an essay at all but a short story. Science fiction. It was about a distant planet that didn’t have summer—it was spring all the time. And it didn’t have vacations either. The aliens on the planet worked 24 four hours a day.

The next morning he handed in the story but soon he felt regretful. He even couldn’t sleep well. In English class, he saw the way Mrs. Peabody looked at him with a strange look in her strict, psychic eyes for long. I’m in trouble, Jim thought, staring at the floor.

Mrs. Peabody said, “Almost everyone in class wrote an essay about his or her summer vacation... Almost everyone.”

This’s bad, Jim thought. I’m getting an F, I know it.

“But,” the teacher continued, “one student decided he didn’t feel like doing that.”

This’s worse than an F... I’m in note-to-the-parents territory now.

“All of your essays read as if they were written in your sleep. Just one of you had the courage to be as imaginative as I asked you to be. Jim Martin is the only one who got an A on the assignment. Now I’m going to ask him to come up here and read his story to you as an example of thinking independently and being creative.” Then, being Mrs. Peabody, she added strictly, “though he should have a little more attention to proper spelling and grammar.”

Jim walked to the front of the classroom, as if he were climbing to the top of Mount Everest or were the first person to step onto the surface of Mars.

What a small thing really, he now reflected as he dodged through the crowded hallway, just a single assignment. But what a difference that moment had made to him.
