Can You Cook?
Tom can, and his mum’s very happy with him. Tom is like any other teenager. He goes to school, does his homework, meets his friends and enjoys doing sports. But between 5:30 and 6:30 from Monday to Friday, Tom does something different. He cooks dinner for all the family: his mum, dad, younger brother Joe and older sister Emma.
Tom’s mum says, “I think it’s important for teenagers to learn how to cook. Maths and English are important, of course, but they need other skills too to help them to survive. First I taught Tom how to cook easy meals like pizza or egg and chips. Then he started using recipes (食谱) in my cooking books. Yesterday he made vegetable soup. It was very good!”
Tom says, “I love cooking and I think I’m really good at it. None of my friends cook. I don’t know why. It isn’t difficult and it’s great fun!”

2 . It was a night in July at an all-girls summer camp. The students sat around a fire and chatted a bit. Their teacher asked if any of them wanted to share something. It could be anything that happened that day and what they learned from it. One girl put up her hand. She said that another girl said something bad to her and it hurt her feelings. She felt quite sad about it.
The teacher said nothing but went to the bathroom and got a tube (软管) of toothpaste (牙膏). She held the tube high in the air so that every student could see it. Then she squeezed (挤) it just a bit so some toothpaste could come out. After that, she tried to put the toothpaste back in the tube, but it just made a mess. She squeezed the tube even more, pushing out more toothpaste and making even more of a mess. But none of it could go back into the tube.
The teacher then told the students, “This toothpaste is just like the words we say. When we say something mean, it’s hard to take it back. It only makes a mess. Think before we speak and make sure our words are kind before we let them out.”

In China, more and more people have realized the seriousness of climate (气候) change. Many people have been living a low-carbon (低碳) life.
Zheng Xiyu is one of them. Every morning, she takes a bus to her office and it takes her about 40 minutes. But she wants to try a different way of transport—cycling. She finds riding a bicycle to work takes about as much time as taking a bus. “However, it’s better for the environment and my health.” she says.
Professor Li Lin uses energy-saving lights. These lights go off themselves when they are not needed, which can save a lot of electricity. Professor Li says small actions are important for protecting the environment.
Gao Hui always chooses products with a longer life when he shops. He says this helps to reduce waste. Two years ago, Gao and his friends set up an environment website, where he wanted to give some advice on saving energy and protecting the environment.

Miss Zhang Guimei (张桂梅) used to live a happy life, but her happiness turned to sadness after her husband’s death from illness. Heart broken, she packed up and left her past behind. That was a great decision, because it has changed the future of more than 2000 girls ever since.
Later, Miss Zhang chose to move to Huaping, a quite poor countryside where so many teenage girls drop out of school early and get married in order to support their brothers and families. The girls’ bad situations made Miss Zhang half sad, half angry. She was such a loving teacher that she made up her mind to help change it. She poured all her energy and money into setting up a free high school just for girls. She believed, “When you educate a girl, you change the lives of three generations (三代人). “Good morning, my dears. How can I help you?” Mr. Smith asked.
“We would like to buy a dog, sir,” April replied.
“Well, there are only two to pick from,” Mr. Smith answered.
They asked Mr. Smith to show them the dogs. One of them was a very big bulldog named Buster. The other was a very tiny chihuahua (吉娃娃) named Teacup.
April wanted Teacup, but Cody preferred Buster. They couldn’t agree on a pet. April suggested they race home for it, and the winner could choose the dog. Cody agreed, then told April to tie her shoelace (鞋带). When April looked down, he ran off and got a head start. Cody made the best of his legs. He really wanted that bulldog.
Cody finally got home, tired but happy. He knew he was the winner. April congratulated him, though a bit unhappy. They returned to the pet store to buy Buster the bulldog.
