On Jarrett Krosoczka’s 14th birthday, his grandparents gave him a gift—a drawing table. During dinner that night, when he was eating a cookie, he found there was a small piece of paper in it. On the paper, it said, “You will be successful in your work.”After dinner, he stuck it on the table.
Krosoczka came from a troubled family. His parents were never around, and he had few friends. His best friends at the time were the characters he read about in books. When he was in the third grade, his parents died in an accident. Then, his grandparents raised him on their own. “They loved me so much,” he says, “and they supported my creative efforts.”
As a young boy, Krosoczka loved drawing and writing stories. He was lucky because he was encouraged both at home and at school. His first-grade teacher, Mrs Alsch especially stood out for him. “I can just remember the love that she offered us as her students,”he said.
When he was 17, Krosoczka volunteered at a camp for sick children called “Hole in the Wall.” There he met Eric, a little boy who was badly ill. Eric sadly didn’t live to see his sixth birthday. It was an unforgettable experience that changed Krosoczka’s life — it was the important moment that made him want to create picture books for children.
After leaving art school, Krosoczka tried his best to publish his work. Though it was difficult, he never gave up. Finally, he published his first book, Good Night, Monkey Boy. His local newspaper celebrated the news, and he signed (签名) copies of the book at a local bookstore. Many people came to the event, including his classmates, grandparents, even teachers. Mrs Alsch even went to the front of the line and proudly said, “I taught him how to read.” It was a very special moment for Krosoczka.
Krosoczka is now a successful artist. His readers love his books, and he receives fan mail from kids around the world. Interestingly, he still draws on that same table, and that small piece of paper is still stuck on it.

International Nurses Day is celebrated every year on May 12th. The date was set in honor of Miss Florence Nightingale’s birthday.
On May 12th, 1820, while enjoying a long vacation with her family in Florence, Italy, Mrs. Nightingale, an English mother gave birth to a girl. She and her husband loved the city very much so they named their daughter after it.
Unlike most girls who were to become a wife and mother, Florence Nightingale, dreamed to become a nurse in helping others, as she found hospitals were very dirty and terrible places. Nightingale’s father tried to change her mind but failed. He later gave in and allowed her to study nursing.
In 1854, many British soldiers went to fight in the Crimean War (克里米亚战争). The army hospital was full of wounded men, but there were no nurses and it was so dirty everywhere that many of the wounded died. Nightingale and a team of nurses were sent to help.
Nightingale worked twenty hours a day to make the hospital a cleaner and safer place. She cleaned the beds, change bandages (绷带) for the wounded and brought them fresh food. With her efforts, fewer soldiers were dying. At night, Nightingale walked around with a lamp, talking to her patients and helping them write family letters. The soldiers called her “the Lady with the Lamp”.
When the war was over, Nightingale became a British national hero (民族英雄). Queen Victoria even wrote to thank her for her service for the country. Nightingale later wrote several books about nursing, and she also started a nursing school. Nightingale is recognized as the founder of modern nursing.

It was a cold snowy morning after the winter vacation. And it was my first day at my new school. I was walking alone slowly and worrying about lots of things. It was early and there weren’t many people on the road.
A girl was riding her bike on ice, suddenly she fell down. She was trying hard to get up but fell again. Without thinking twice, I went over and helped her. She said “thank you” with a smile and then rode away. Her words warmed me a lot.
Finally, I got to school. The teacher took me to the classroom and introduced (介绍) me to the class. Then he asked me to sit down beside a girl. I felt so nervous that I didn’t dare (敢) to look at her. Soon the first class English started. Their textbooks were different from those in my old school. As I was thinking what to do, an English book came in front of me. “Let’s share,” the girl beside me said. “Hi, I’m Carrie.” I looked up. It was the girl I helped that morning. “But I want these seashells,” Betty said unhappily. “Each one is a different shape and size. They are all special.”
Suddenly, David saw the water rising along the beach. He shouted to Betty, “The waves (海浪) are about to take your toys!” As Betty ran to get her things, she called to David, “Please put my seashells into the car!”
David was putting one of the beach chairs into the car when his foot accidentally knocked over the basket. As David lifted a heavy box, he slipped (滑倒) and dropped the box right on top of the seashells, breaking most of them into pieces.
Betty came back with her toys. When she saw her seashells broken, she began to cry. David started to pick up the seashells and place them carefully back into the basket.
Dad tried to explain to Betty that it was an accident. But Betty was still upset. David also felt sad. He thought about what he could do to make it up to his sister. When he got home, he had a perfect idea.
The next morning, David waited for Betty with the basket of seashells and some strong glue. He also had a framed (装框的) photo of the two of them. Together they looked through the basket and found several seashells that were not broken and could still be used. Then they glued the seashells to the frame.

6 . A lovely surprise has magic power. That’s probably why many people, especially the young, love blind boxes, or mystery boxes. Now a young man in Anhui Province has put a fresh thing into the magic box—healthy vegetables.
A common day for Zheng Tao, 34, is spent with vegetables. Each of his “mystery veg boxes” has seven to eight kinds of seasonal vegetables. Zheng offers two types (类型) of veg boxes: 2 kilos (36.8 yuan) and 4 kilos (72.8 yuan). All vegetables are planted in the open air without chemicals (化学物质). “The number of each kind of vegetables is just enough for one or two meals to avoid waste,” said Zheng, who left his job in the city to become a new farmer in his hometown.
The idea of the mystery veg box came by accident. In July 2021, Zheng’s parents produced more vegetables than the family needed. Then he shared some pictures of the vegetables online and asked if anyone wanted them. After a couple of minutes, he got four to five orders. Two weeks later, Zheng started his veg box business.
His vegetables got very popular. At its peak, Zheng sold more than 200 kilo blind boxes daily. That was more than 600 kg of vegetables. To offer vegetables to more customers, the new farmer rented (租) some land in July 2022 and began working with local villagers.

When Joe told me his birthday party wasn’t going to be a seafood barbecue and then singing karaoke again this year, I almost refused his invitation. But this escape room experience was so much better! Joe’s a big Harry Potter fan, he’s read all the books, so he chose the School of Witcheraft and Wizardry escape rooms for us. The aim was to pass our exams and graduate from wizard school. It was so much fun!
Li Ling, aged 15, Guangzhou, China
I haven’t done anything like this before, but I love history. So to celebrate the end of term, we went to a Pharaoh (法老) escape room. What we needed to do was to find the lost treasure of the last Pharaoh. The pyramid (金字塔) was very real. We worked as a team to find clues and solve riddles(谜语). It was really satisfying to complete the task, but I think some riddles were really a piece of cake because we completed all the tasks in only 49 minutes!
Chelsea, aged 16, Paris, France
My family loves escape rooms, so 10 of us visited one during the summer holidays. There were two teams of five and we needed to find a bomb (炸弹) before it exploded (爆炸). 10 . I am Garrison. I live on a small farm in Kenya. As a child, I enjoyed trying new ideas. Sometimes I could make my own inventions, such as electronic toys from car parts and peach-picking sticks. I also made other useful daily things for my neighbours.
At the age of 13, I invented something that changed my life. One night, a lion came into my family’s farm and killed one of our cows. I was angry. So I decided to “invent” a solution.
The first idea I got was to use fire, because I thought the lion was scared of fire. But I came to know that didn’t help, because it was even helping the lion to see through the cowshed (牛棚).
And a second idea was to use a scarecrow (稻草人). I was trying to trick the lion into thinking that I was standing near the cowshed. But the lion was very clever. It came the first day, saw the scarecrow, and went back. But the second day, it came and found that the scarecrow didn’t move. It was always there! So the lion jumped in and killed another cow.
However, one night, I was walking around the cowshed with a flashlight. To my surprise, the lion didn’t show up. Then I realized that the lion was afraid of a moving light. So I had an idea…
