1 . It happened today, which we never want to happen, but we’ve been preparing for it for a whole school year. A tornado touched down (登陆) near our school.

I wasn’t even in the classroom at the moment. I had taken a student with me to the workroom to help gather something for a test. When the emergency alarms went off, immediately I grabbed my student’s hand and ran as fast as I could back to the classroom.

I never imagined needing to put our tornado practice into use. I never imagined actually needing to line my students up against the wall and have them crouch down (蹲伏) with their knees and heads touching the ground, hands on the backs of their heads. Their hearts beat so fast that they couldn’t catch their breath. Their fear-filled eyes looked up at me as they asked if their parents, grandparents and friends were going to be fine. Never could I imagine that the silence would come over the whole schoolyard, with hundreds of students gathered in the classrooms of one building.

Other teachers and I tried our best to comfort our students, assure (使确信) them of their safety and promise them everything would be all right, though we truly didn’t know what the result would be.

Today has done something bad to me, and I am sure it has done harm to the hundreds and thousands of teachers in the local areas and surrounding areas. But at the same time, I am very proud, surprised and pleased with how my students behaved. Never have I seen they follow directions so quickly and quietly. Even though tears were in eyes and hearts were beating fast, my students were brave beyond their age today. They were able to be 100% calm and collected (镇静的) the whole time and for that, I was greatly moved.

1. Where did the students gather during the tornado?

C.The students were organized to run to the nearest exit.D.The students felt certain about the safety of their families.
3. Why was the teacher greatly moved?
A.Because the tornado did not do harm to the local areas.
B.Because the parents worked well with the school all the time.
C.Because the students were brave and well-organized during the tornado.
D.Because hundreds of students lined up against the walls of one building.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.A horrible tornado hit the school.
B.The school was in a mess after the tornado.
C.A brave teacher saved many people’s lives during the tornado.
D.The teachers and students stayed calm when the tornado happened.

3 . Boyan Slat is a 17-year-old Dutch boy. He has been dreaming of cleaning up the world’s oceans for a long time.

In 2010, he went on a diving vacation in Greece and was surprised. “I saw more plastic bags than fish in the water,” he said.

From then on, he began to pay more attention to ocean pollution. Slat decided to give up higher education and set up the Ocean Cleanup, a Non-Government Organization. Its purpose is to clean up ocean rubbish. He has set up the world’s first ocean cleanup system with his team.

Every year, over 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans, and it can take up to 500 years to break down. In 2018, the World Economic Forum predicted that the weight of ocean plastic would match that of all the fish in our oceans by 2050.

Sea animals easily get trapped in plastic so that they can’t move. They can even die if they eat it. Smaller plastic pieces can also enter the food chain and end up in our bodies.

Slat’s plan was to create an environmentally-friendly, large system to clear out plastic rubbish from the ocean.

After seven years of tests, on Oct. 2, 2019, a device called System 001/B came out. It successfully caught and collected a large amount of plastic rubbish floating in the ocean.

9 . I LOVE FOOTBALL. I started playing when I was nine years old, and football got me through difficult periods. It helps make me who I am today. And even though I did not reach the National Football League, I sometimes think I got more from achieving that dream, without realizing it.

My romance with football started when my dad drove me, kicking and screaming, to join a league. I didn’t want to be there at first. I was naturally weak and small. Fear turned to awe (敬畏) when I met my coach, Jim Graham, a huge and strong guy. And he was really strict and old-school.

Coach Graham used to drive me hard. I remember one practice in particular. “You’re doing it all wrong, Pausch. Go back! Do it again!” I tried to do what he wanted. But it wasn’t enough. “You owe(欠) me, Pausch! You’re doing push-ups after practice.

When the practice was over, one of the assistant coaches came up to me. “Coach Graham drove you pretty hard, didn’t he?” he said.

“Yeah.”

“That’s a good thing,” the assistant told me. “When you’re doing badly and nobody says anything to you anymore, that means they’ve given up on you.”

That conversation has been with me closely my whole life. When you see yourself doing something badly and nobody’s willing to tell you anymore, that’s a bad place to be. You may not want to hear it, but those who always push you hard in your life are often the ones telling you they still love you and care about you, and want to make you better.

There’s a lot of talk these days about giving children self-respect. It’s not something you can give; it’s something they have to build. Coach Graham knew there was really only one way to teach kids how to make it stronger: You give them something they can’t do; they work hard until they find they can do it, and you just keep repeating.

When Coach Graham first got hold of me, I was a weak kid with no skills and no physical strength. But he made me realize that if I work hard enough, there will be things I can do tomorrow that I can’t do today. I really felt thankful to Coach Graham for what he had done to me, though it surely didn’t feel good at that time to do so many push-ups after practice.

根据上文内容判断正(T)误(F)
1. In the writer’s eyes, Coach Graham was strict and wise.
2. The writer believes that those who are quite strict with you actually think ill of you.
3. The writer was thankful to Graham because the coach encouraged him to do better.
4. From the passage, we can learn “Never offer to teach fish to swim”
5. Coach Graham knew the method to teach kids how to build self-respect.
