文章大意:本文节选自《格列佛游记》,主要讲了格列佛在小人国利立普特岛的冒险中,通过智慧和创造力解决了睡眠问题,与当地居民建立了友谊。

1 . When his ship was damaged in a storm, Gulliver was washed up on the island of Lilliput. All of the people, animals and things in that country were tiny. The average Lilliputian stood only six inches tall—so to them, Gulliver was a giant!

He soon made friends with the Emperor of Lilliput and the emperor’s family. They made sure that their guest was well taken care of! Each day, he was served with good meals.

Gulliver repaid the Lilliputians’ kindness by doing jobs for them. He could plough (犁) a field with his comb, lift rocks without difficulty and construct stone houses as if he was playing with toy blocks.

The only problem for Gulliver was getting a good night’s sleep! He had a quilt that was made of many Lilliputian blankets, and it was very comfortable. But his bed was made from lots of tiny beds tied together—and it was terribly uncomfortable! He couldn’t sleep well. After too many sleepless nights, Gulliver had an idea.

He made a plan on the largest piece of paper he could find. The emperor and empress looked at it, nodded, and began giving orders to their people. People in Lilliput tried their best to help to make his “invention”.

After many days, Gulliver’s invention was ready, and all the tiny people gathered to see it. The thing was about two metres long, and it looked like a strange floppy balloon.

The crowd watched as Gulliver picked it up and began blowing into it through a tiny valve (阀门) in the side. It started to puff (喷出) up as he filled it with lungfuls of air.

At last, it was full, and he plugged the valve with a cork. The object looked like a huge rectangular cake as it sat on the ground!

Gulliver lay down on it with a sigh of satisfaction and pulled the patchwork quilt up to his chin. His new air mattress was much more comfortable than dozens of little beds joined together. It was like sleeping on a cloud! He fell asleep as the crowd quietly go back home.

1. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “construct” in paragraph 3?
A.Build.B.Paint.C.Clean.D.Draw.
2. Why did Gulliver decided to make his “invention”?
A.He was ordered by the emperor to do so.
B.All the tiny people gathered to see him.
C.He needed a comfortable bed to have a good sleep.
D.The tiny people gave him lots of tiny beds to tie together.
3. Which of the following best describes Gulliver?
A.Funny and kind.B.Helpful and skilful.
C.Pleasant and humorous.D.Brave and hardworking.

Li Anqiang, 33, works on prosthetic rehabilitation (假肢康复). He has been using artificial (人造的) legs for 15 years in his daily study and work since the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008. His legs hurt seriously after being buried for a whole day and night, and after that, he lost his legs forever.

He soon returned to school but felt hopeless. “I had no idea what I would do with the rest of my life,” he said. He finally found the courage to spend another five months in rehabilitation and training to live with prosthetic legs.

After hard work, Li went to Sichuan University and later he got the chance to study in the US.

At the end of 2019, Li returned to Chengdu and began to make videos on social media about his life with prosthetic legs. He found that many people who experienced amputations (截肢) could not walk freely, because they didn’t have professional rehabilitation exercises. This encouraged him to work on prosthetics and rehabilitation.

“I believe that the world is beautiful. Even though it can be difficult to get around, we should still go out and see the world,” Li said. Long ago, Mother Nature gave each tree a different purpose. However, she did not share her reasons with the trees.

Fir Tree (杉树) had many tree friends. In summer, they watched Bird and Squirrel (松鼠) play in the field. Then autumn arrived. The leaves on other trees turned colorful. Fir Tree’s leaves stayed green. Fir Tree told Mother Nature that he wanted his leaves to change colors, too.

“Be patient,” Mother Nature said. “You will learn your purpose.”

So Fir Tree waited. The temperature dropped. Bird flew south, and Squirrel was nowhere around. All the trees lost their leaves except Fir Tree. Soon it snowed. Fir Tree cried, “Why don’t I change like my friends?”

“Be patient,” Mother Nature replied. “Soon you will get to know your purpose.”

Just then, Squirrel appeared. She was cold. She asked if she could build a warm home in branches (树枝). Other trees said no because they had no leaves. But Fir Tree said yes. Squirrel ran up Fir Tree’s branches. Soon, she was warm, comfortable and asleep.

When I was young, my father told me that some acts of love might give someone happiness. So I always try my best to help others.

One afternoon, it was very hot. I was driving on the highway to Guangzhou when another car suddenly came into my lane (车 道). My car was in the far right lane, so it ran into the roadside. But luckily, it didn’t cause an accident. I was angry with that driver, but I thought that he just did not notice the lane change, and maybe he was just not careful enough.

The car ran away after cutting me off. Very soon it disappeared. After a while, I found the same car. The driver was walking along the roadside. He looked worried because his car had a flat tire (瘪 胎). Though he had a spare tire (备 胎), he had nothing to work with. I decided to help him. I spent fifteen minutes changing the tire for him and let him sit in my airconditioned car while I did it. I was hot and tired, but I really felt happy after an act of kindness to the man.

Helping others is how we get happiness. That’s true. We should lend a hand to others in trouble.

I really like Peking Opera because it makes me feel peaceful and happy. When I was 8 years old, I saw Peking Opera actresses dancing and singing in a graceful way on television. I told my mom that I wanted to learn Peking Opera, and she put me in classes. Since then I’ve been on my learning journey for 5 years.

I have to wake up at 6 o’clock every morning to practice the key skills in Peking Opera performance, such as leg exercises, somersaults (翻筋斗), and voice training. When practicing handstands (倒立), all the weight is on my arms and I sweat. And to make my pronunciation more clear, I read the lines loudly and quickly. It makes my lips numb (麻木的), but I don’t give up. In practice, what really worries me is getting hurt. One time, I fell down while practicing. That made it difficult for me to go up and down stairs for a long time.

As the saying goes, “One minute on the stage needs 10 years’ practice off the stage.” All the hard work was worth it once I got the chance to perform Peking Opera on stage. This year, I performed a part from The Drunken Beauty during a show on CCTV.

The charm of Peking Opera is timeless. I hope Peking Opera will be loved and enjoyed by more young people.

When I was in primary school, I was fat and didn’t like doing exercise. Because I hardly did any exercise, I often felt sick and went to see the doctor. I was absent from school from time to time, so I couldn’t catch up with others. And my poor health made it even more difficult for me to keep on exercising. The cycle repeated itself. My parents were worried about me.

One day, after having supper, my father asked me to have a walk with him in the park. My father insisted (坚持) that for people with very poor health, it was difficult to take up running and other sports at the beginning, but they could start from walking and increase endurance (耐力) little by little. With his encouragement, I agreed and we went out together. It was hard for me to walk for half an hour. I wanted to give up, but my father encouraged me to keep on walking.

From then on, I was often asked to walk with my parents. To my surprise, I could walk for an hour in the fourth month. How proud I felt! I loved taking exercise gradually. Now I am a perfect runner in my middle school. I lost all the fat and I am a healthy girl now.
