Xi Zi,20, a girl from Guangdong, suffered (遭受) bullying in school for almost 10 years from middle school to college. Some boys made fun of her clothes and her weight. Her roommates spread rumors (谣言) about her, calling her a thief. Nobody wanted to be friends with her.She usually spent playtime alone. Those experiences made her want to die.
Luckily, Xi Zi gradually found a way to help herself and others in the same situation. She made her experiences into a role-playing board game (桌游) —The Choice of Transfer Students. It has three characters: — the bully, the victim (受害者) or the onlooker (旁观者). Players can choose to be one of the them. They experience many bullying situations, and their words and actions bring about different results. In this way, players see what bullying can do to people. Hope they can choose to do the right thing when facing similar situations.
Xi Zi hopes that speaking out about her experiences can make more people help bullied children.
“I hope they know that in the face of bullying, we also have the ability to fight back ,” said Xi Zi.

5 . Last week, we went on a school trip to the Singapore Botanic Gardens(新加坡植物园). We went there by bus. We talked happily while enjoying the beautiful sceneries along the way.
It took us three hours to get there. As soon as I got off the bus, I was surprised to find the beauty of the vegetation(植物). There was beyond our wildest dreams! As we stepped into the “Amazon Forest”(微风) blowing toward us.
After a long walk, we went into the Orchid Garden(兰花园). The moment I laid my eyes on the flowers there, I let out an excited cry. From blue orchids to yellow orchids, red orchids to orange orchids, I saw a spectacular site(壮观景象)! I feasted my eyes on(饱览) the beautiful flowers.
Just then, it started to rain. Luckily, we were near the Sembcorp Cool House(胜科冷室). We ran as fast as our tired legs could carry us to the cool house. The moment we entered, we felt the nice welcoming air-conditioning(空调). There we saw plants that can only grow in cooler temperatures. There were over 1,000 orchid types to see!
In Singapore, if famous people visit, we will name an orchid after them, to remember their visit. Our national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim(胡姬花), is also an orchid. This shows that orchids are important flowers in our country!
I had a wonderful day at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. It has become my favorite place. Whenever you think you need your mood(心情) lifted, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is the place for you!
As seen from the world map, Singapore is just a little red dot(点). However, there are amazing wonders that live on the land. Welcome to Sigapore to find more!

Project-based learning(项目化学习)is learning while doing. It gives learners the chance to get a deeper understanding of a topic. During the learning, learners solve problems by using real-world examples and challenges. Project-based learning is becoming widely used in schools. Students work on a project over a period of time—from a week to a term. At the end of the project, they show their knowledge and skills by creating a product for people. Let’s take the example of Sandra.
Sandra is an eleven-year-old student in Sunshine Primary School. She wanted to know more about Greek mythology(希腊神话). Well, how did she make it?
◆ She chose Greek mythology characters as the topic because she was interested in the characters and their stories. | ◆ | Step 1 Choose a topic |
◆ She had to learn about that topic and do some research on it. To collect information, she read books and articles about the history of Greek mythology. She also read some novels like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. She watched videos and played games all connected with Greek mythology. When she collected her information, she was ready to create a project. | ◆ | Step 2 Do the research |
◆ She created a project based on(以……为基础)her talents and skills. She loves to build with Legos(乐高), so she decided to build lego creations based on the stories of Greek mythology characters. She’s also really good at art, so she created a book about her favorite characters. In her book, she drew pictures of them and wrote the stories in her own words. | ◆ | Step 3 ________ |
◆ After all of that work, she made a living room presentation for Mom and Dad and shared the two products that she had created. Then she shared her project online with friends, and even shared her project on social media. | ◆ | Step 4 Do the presentation |
From the example of Sandra, we can see that project-based learning allows a student to learn about a topic and then create a project based on his or her talents and skills. Not everyone is a great test taker, but everyone is good at something. Through project work, students can not only learn deeply about a topic, but also have fun learning. So if you’ re interested in something, why not start with project-based learning?
1. How do learners solve problems in project-based learning?2. How long does it take students to finish a project?
3. What did Sandra do to collect information? (One example is OK. )
4. What is the best subtitle(小标题)of Step 3?
5. What were the two products that Sandra created? Why could she create them?
6. What do you think of Sandra’s learning experience? In your opinion, what’s the advantage of project-based learning?
Jerry is a world-famous mountain climber. He has climbed many high mountains in the world. Starting in 2015, he and his friends spent two years on an adventure (探险) in South America, covering 7,800 miles. He was even named “Adventure of the Year” by a famous geography magazine in 2018.
Although Jerry had achieved great success, he didn’t feel fulfilled. He asked himself “Is it enough to climb the highest mountains? Am I doing something helpful? How can I turn my adventures into something that can help the world?”
Jerry learned that scientists need plans, rocks and water samples (样本) from the places far away to do research. But scientists can’t get there themselves as such places are hard to reach-only the bravest adventurers can make it. Jerry thought himself could do something to help. He then came up with an idea. He set up a team of top adventurers to collect samples for scientists. By studying the samples, scientists could know more about the earth and find ways to protect it.
Recently Jerry and his adventurer friends have discovered a special plant life of Mountain Qomolangma. The samples they brought back have helped scientists how plants live in extreme (极端的) condition.
For Jerry, this kind of adventure is most satisfying. “Such adventures had made us see life in a different way. Now, being the best climber isn’t important for me. What matters is doing something helpful while climbing the mountains. There is still much more we can do.” Jerry said to a newspaper.

Languages are magical and powerful, sometimes more than one can imagine. At the end of 2019, an old saying “山川异域, 风月同天” has deeply touched our Chinese people, which means even though the scenery varies from each other, we share the wind and moon under the same sky.
The saying was printed on packages (包裹)of masks which are sent to Wu-han. Hubei Province from Japan when the novel corona-virus broke out in China. There were also Chinese and Japanese national flags, as well as Chinese characters “加油! 中国” signing on the packages. Not only is it the friendship behind the masks, but also the special beauty of our ancient Chinese language.
To our surprise, the saying is from a Japanese prince and it is written in ancient Chinese language. The ancient saying first appeared on the clothes which were sent to the monks(僧侣)in the Chinese Tang dynasty.
The Chinese monk Jianzhen decided to start his journey to Japan when he was touched by these Chinese characters at that time. He tried six times in 11 years before finally arriving in the country and then helped a lot with the development of Japanese arts and medical studies. Jianzhen was known as the messenger of culture between China and Japan. He was remembered by the people of both countries.
Now once again, the Chinese are deeply touched by the meaning in the ancient saying: understanding, sharing, and support. It feels like walking into the house from outdoors in the freezing winter and having a cup of hot tea. The warmth is inside.

We know that many students in China’s underdeveloped areas can’t get enough education resources. But who can help them? During the summer vacation in 2020, a group of students from Tsinghua University High School did their part. Seventeen of the school’s students volunteered to teach lessons to 30 primary students in Nanjian, Yunnan through livestreaming (直播) and recorded broadcasts (录播).
The online classes lasted for five days. The students in Yunnan were shy at first and felt distant (疏远的) from their Beijing teachers. So the Tsinghua group prepared a self-introduction video and played the game You Draw and I Guess to get familiar with their students. Gradually, the Yunnan students took a more active part in the classes.
The young teachers also tried to find the right teaching methods for their students. Yuan Mengqiu, 16, found that the Yunnan students learned little English grammar. All they did was reciting words. So she gave them three discussion topics including “My Hometown”, “Four Seasons” and “Picture Description”. And then, she asked the students to speak or write about these topics in English. “I noticed that my students gradually improved, ” Yuan said, “ I feel satisfied. ”
On the last day, the Yunnan students performed a “ finger dance” to express their thanks to the Beijing students. Meanwhile, the Beijing students sang songs, drew pictures and recited poems for their Yunnan friends. “I will never forget this special experience, ” Yuan said, “ I will keep on helping people who are in need.”
