Recently, a school in Sichuan held an activity. It asked students to tell the stories of their family heirlooms (传家宝). More than 300 students took part. They brought photos of their heirlooms to school and shared their stories.
Cassette (磁带盒) radio Song Zhengchen’s heirloom is a cassette radio. His grandmother bought the radio in the 1980s and listened to news on it. His mother then used it to listen to music tapes. When Song was young, his mother often played old poems for him on the radio.
Medal of honor Guo Kexing’s heirloom is a medal from his great-grandfather. He took part in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (抗美援朝战争). For him, the medal stands as an honor for his family. “Whenever I see my great-grandfather’s medal, I feel very proud. In my heart, my great-grandfather is a hero,” said Guo.
Food coupons (粮票) Xiao Yao won first prize in the activity. Her heirlooms are some food coupons. Her grandma used to tell her stories about food shortages (短缺) when she was a kid. Back then, people could only get a little food each month. She said, “My grandma wants me to be thankful for what we have today and work hard for a better tomorrow.”
