1 . What do the following animals have in common? Pandas, tigers, whales, lions and camels? They are all in danger! Animals are in danger for many reasons. Sadly, the human activity is the main one.
Excessive (过度的) hunting: For centuries, humans have hunted elephants for their tusks (长牙), killed tigers for their fur, and caught many other animals for meat.
Human migration (人类迁徙): In 1505, Europeans discovered a beautiful island in the Indian Ocean named Mauritius. They brought dogs, pigs, monkeys, and rats with them. It was bad news for dodo birds. They did not have any natural enemies before. They picked up fruits falling down from trees and built their houses on the ground. Shortly after humans came, dodo birds were in big trouble—man killed them for their meat, and those animals broke their homes and ate their food. The number of dodo birds became less and less and then this kind of bird was extinct. The last dodo bird was killed in 1681.
Nature remaking: People cut down forest for farming and houses and build dams (水库) to make sure that they have enough water to use. When people are remaking nature to make their lives comfortable, the land for animals to live on becomes less and less.

Information about everything is available (可获得的) now.
With the help of search engines (SE) like Baidu and Google, information about almost everything can be found easily. The information on the Internet isn’t always right, but it makes us know more knowledge about a lot of different things than before.
Software (软件) in the computer makes work more efficient (高效率的).
In the computer, there are many kinds of software. People can use these kinds of software to do many things, such as working, studying, shopping and communicating with each other. With the help of the software, people can learn many new skills and work in a more efficient way.

In summer, many of us like spending time around areas of water. However, life is full of the unexpected. If you see someone in trouble in the water, do you know what the best way to help them is?
I have taken my lifesaving course for three years. We meet at our center every Saturday.
I believe that I can help others when they fall into the water, but I’m nervous about who could save me.
Lifesaving course
A lifesaving course teaches you what to do if there’s danger in the water. It shows you how to help a person and how to be safe when you are around water. It teaches you helpful skills such as first aid and how to use open-water throw bags and life rings. It doesn’t matter how old you are.
Here is some lifesaving basic advice about water safety. First, when around water, “stop and think” before going into water. Second, always “stay together” with friends or family and swim at a lifeguarded (救生员的) place. Third, in open-water areas shout loudly to ask others to help and throw a floating object (漂浮的物品) for the person to hold onto. Fourth, if you are the person in trouble, keep your cool, float on your back and call for help loudly.

4 . In a school garden in Xi’an, the roles of students are not the same as before. Here, students do the teaching.
“This is our vegetable area,” Wu Nan, a student from Grade 8, tells a visitor, “We have grown many kinds of vegetables.”
“Look! These are tomatoes” another student adds, “and those are carrots...”
The two students have been working in the garden since 2021. They are part of their school’s gardening program. Actually, most schools in Xi’an have their own gardens, where students harvest (收割) their special “schoolwork”.
In the gardens, students work in teams with the help of their teachers. They finish all the important steps by themselves. For example, team members study what to grow. Then they discuss and plan their gardens. They plant seeds (种子), pull grass and water their plants. Some students also grow oranges and apples by themselves. In autumn, they harvest their “schoolwork”—all kinds of fruits and vegetables!
School gardens provide ideas for classes, too. For example, students study the plants they grow in science classes. Math becomes a useful tool for planning the garden. Studies have shown that schools gardening programs help students do better in school.
Schools’ gardening programs offer learning experiences as well as fun. Young gardeners can practice skills that are useful for all their lives. They’ve had fun working together as a team and learned how to work together.

5 . In some western countries, many children do chores to get some money. They usually start to do chores when they are ten years old.
School students have to do homework and study for tests. They don’t have too much free time from Monday to Friday, so they often do chores on Saturdays and Sundays.
Young kids only do easy chores. So they don’t get much money. But that’s enough. Many of them only want to buy candies. Because candies are cheap! What they can often help is to do the dishes, sweep the floor, or feed the pets.
When they get older, they want to buy more and more things. They want things that are more expensive than candies. So they have to work harder! They often help their parents wash the car, cut the grass, or cook meals.
Some jobs are a good way for kids to learn new things. For example, they can learn how to cook. Of course, their parents help them at first.

6 . Falling asleep in class is still common among students. Why do students sometimes fall asleep in class?
A main reason is short of sleep. However, there are also reasons for getting too little sleep. Homework is necessary for most students, one that can take three to four hours every night. And a student who wants to be able to take part in any activity besides homework must stay up late. Club activities, sports, computer-game playing, and TV viewing, for example, all make students have less time for both homework and sleep.
Physical problems are another reason that can have students to fall asleep in class. For example, insomnia (失眠) may keep a student tired during class hours. It is a serious problem that may need medical attention.
The effects (影响) of falling asleep in class can be quite serious. First of all, sleeping in class is not a good way to endear (使……受喜爱) yourself to teachers. Secondly, it is highly possible that other students may make jokes about those who sleep in class. However, the worst effect of sleeping in class is missing important points. In the long run, sleepers may end up with failing classes.
Since students are probably not going to deal with the problem, falling asleep in class will probably go on. It will continue until more students find a way to balance (平衡) their personal and social lives with school and work, while still finding enough time to sleep.

Zhouzhi National Nature Reserve lies in Zhouzhi County, Shanxi Province, China. The reserve mainly protects rare (稀有的) animals such as the golden monkey and their living places, the mixed forests above 1,500 meters. There are about 1,500 golden monkeys living there, making it the area with the largest number of golden monkeys in China. That’s why the reserve is known as “the hometown of golden monkeys”.
There are many interesting facts about golden monkeys. For example, they may communicate with each other in their “language”. When a mother calls “Jiajia”, she is telling her baby an enemy is probably coming. When a baby says “Ai ai”, he or she may be greeting others. When golden monkeys shout “Wu wu” or “Wo wo”, they may be happy or angry. Their habits, many of which are similar to us, are also interesting. They mainly eat plants, fruits and vegetables like people. They would also like to protect their family members or friends.
At the same time, golden monkeys are important for the forest ecosystem (生态系统), so in addition to setting up reserves to protect them, we also need to do what we can to protect them.
The hard work of a photographer in Xi’an named Zhang Qiang, truly deserves (值得) our attention and praise. Walking in the Qinling Mountains, he uses his camera to tell the story of the living conditions and ecology of golden monkeys for years. Years of experience in wildlife photography offers Zhang Qiang a clearer understanding of the relationship between humans and nature.
“I always hope that more people can see the living conditions of wild animals through the photos. I also want the world to see the efforts made by my hometown and even the whole of China for ecological protection, and let more people connect with nature through images, so that all this will become more meaningful,” Zhang Qiang said.

In Shanghai, when people throw away (扔掉) wet waste, they must take the wet waste (mainly food waste) out of the rubbish bag first. Then, they throw the rubbish bag into another trashcan (垃圾桶). This is not easy to do.
Shi Yuan is a 14-year-old student from Shanghai Wenlai Middle School. One rainy day in May, 2019, when he was throwing away wet waste, he got food waste all over his trousers. Then, he decided to do something about this. He made a special rubbish bag for wet waste. The bag has a band of adhesive tape (黏胶带). When one end of the tape is open, the bag turns upside down by itself. Then, people can easily throw wet waste into the trashcan. Shi’s idea won him a prize in the Shanghai Adolescents Science & Technology Innovation Contest. So far, he has sold over 2 million bags online. And on May 4, 2020, he began to sell his bags in 11 supermarkets in Shanghai.

9 . It is necessary to share your feelings with others. Sharing your feelings helps you to get closer to people you care about and who care about you, like your parents or teachers.
Sometimes it can be really hard not to tell anyone that you’re feeling sad, worried, or upset. Don’t keep feelings locked inside. If that, it can even make you feel sick!
But if you talk with someone who cares for you, like your mom or dad, you will not be all alone with your problems or worries. It doesn’t mean your problems and worries go off, but at least someone else knows what your trouble is and can help you find ways to do with it.
If the person doesn’t understand what you mean right away, try explaining it in a different way or give an example that has something to do with you. Of course, there are many ways for you to speak up your feelings. If you think you’ll have trouble saying what’s on your mind, write it down on a piece of paper.
Some of us, just like some adults, are more private (有隐私的) than others. That means some people will feel shy about sharing their feelings. A kid doesn’t have to share every feeling he or she has, but it is important to share feelings when a kid needs help.
