In China, group-buying is becoming more and more popular. Pinduoduo was built in the form of group-buying. The company offered low prices to “teams” of online buyers. It encouraged customers to invite friends and family to buy together. Now, another form has appeared: community group-buying.
Community group-buying allow a group of people in the same community to get discounts (折扣) by buying together. In March 2020, the company started its own community group-buying platform (平台) Kuaituantuan. On July 7, another Chinese company Meituan set up a community group-buying platform called Youxuan, which means “best pick”. The platform sells fresh food, including fruits and vegetables. As of July 27, the service had begun in several cities around the country.
The community group-buying focuses on a group of people who live in the same community. Meituan’s Youxuan has a leader from a community. Then he creates a WeChat group and starts posting product chains (链接) to people of his community. The chains guide customers to Youxuan’s WeChat Mini Program to place their orders. The next day, they can get what they bought from the leader.
The group-buying form of shopping became especially popular when COVID-19 began to spread across China. As people couldn’t go out, many communities created a food collection team. And this idea got the support of the government and the country.
