1 . New Year’s Day is a traditional (传统的) festival in the world. On this day, people in different countries eat different food.

In the USA, people eat herrings (鲱鱼). Americans like herrings because herrings always swim fast together in the water. They are the symbol of happiness and richness for a family.

In Spain, families like to get together, listen to music and play games. And when it is twelve o’clock at night and the New Year begins, people will eat twelve grapes. They think the grapes can bring good luck in the next twelve months.

As we all know, dumplings are the best food for Chinese. They mean tuanyuan. And many families make one or two dumplings with coins (硬币) inside. People who eat dumplings with coins will get happiness.

Different people eat different food on New Year’s Day, but they all want health and happiness.

2 . We did a survey (调查) on how students get to school at No. 20 High School. Here are the results (结果).

There are 2,616 students in this school. About 56% students live in different places around the center of our city. So they can go to school by school bus. They have lunch at school.

About 18% students ride their bikes to school. Because they do not live far from school. At noon, they often have lunch at school and do homework in the classrooms.

About 16% students live in the countryside or come from other cities. They take the bus to school, or their parents drive them to school on Monday morning. They usually live in the school on school days. Then they go back home on Friday afternoon. They can get free healthy breakfast at school.

A small number of students walk to school. They live near the school. It’s about 10%. They usually go back home for lunch.

7 . It’s December. It’s snowy and the weather is really cold in the north (北方) of China. You can see many children playing in the snow. Some of them are making snowmen. Some are skating on the river. It’s a white world (世界). How beautiful!

But in Australia, the weather is hot now. Many people are swimming in the sea. They are having a good time. Jim and his friends are playing soccer near the sea. They want to swim after playing soccer.

Why can they swim in December? It is winter, isn’t it? Yes, it is in China. But it isn’t in Australia. That’s because China and Australia have different seasons (不同的季节) in a year.

10 . Can you imagine a cloud floating in the middle of your room? Do you want to know what it feels like to fly like a bird? Here, we have picked out four interesting inventions to share with you.

Talking Gloves

Four foreign students have created a pair of gloves, and it helps people to communicate with people who have hearing and speaking problems. The gloves are equipped with sensors (传感器). They recognize sign language and translate it into text on a smartphone. Then the smartphone changes the text to spoken words. Thus you can understand sign language easily.

Google Glasses

Google Glasses are like a computer built into a pair of glasses. Then the glasses allow you to surf the Internet and make calls without even lifting a finger. The glasses also have a camera and GPS mapping system. Users can take and share photos, check maps and surf the Internet just by looking up, down, left and right.

Indoor Clouds

That’s a real world. An artist, Smilde managed to create a small but perfect white cloud in the middle of a room using a fog machine. But it required careful planning — the temperature, humidity (湿度) and lighting all had to be just right. The cloud only lasted for a short while, though.

Wingsuits

The suit realizes your dream of flying like a bird. Well, not exactly flying, but gliding (滑翔) through the air. It increases the surface area of the human body, which makes it easier for people to float in the air. Fliers wearing wingsuits can glide one kilometer in about 30 seconds.
