4 . Computers help humans with a lot of things, from searching information to math. Now, they may be able to help us in more complex (复杂的) ways. Recent research has showed a new computer program that can recognize (识别) human emotions (情感), simply based on how they type.
Researchers from the Islamic University of Technology in Bangladesh asked a group of people to type two paragraphs from Lewis Carroll’s novel Alice in Wonderland. The participants (参与者) then chose an emotional state they felt while typing. Emotions tested were joy, fear, sadness and shame.
Then the researchers put the text into the computer to study. Surprisingly, the computer was right 70 percent of the time in telling the participants’ emotional states. The most correct emotions it guessed correctly were joy (87 percent) and anger (81 percent). The least correct emotion the computer guessed was sadness (60 percent).
However, the computer program is limited (局限) in what it can do. But scientists believe that it will help humans in the future.
“If we could build any program that is intelligent enough to communicate with humans that involved (含有) emotions…then using machines could be more effective (有效的) and friendly,” the researchers wrote in the study. For example, when looking for a movie online, perhaps a computer program could make suggestions for films that would match your mood.
And as the researchers said, this type of computer program could also help humans in a number of ways. First, with online teaching, emotionally intelligent computers could change its teaching style or content (内容) to help students learn better. Second, with online conversation, doctors could be able to tell the emotion of a patient.

Paying the bill is also different from country to country. In China, one person usually pays for everyone. In Western countries, if friends eat together, they usually share the cost. This is called “go Dutch”. Also, When Western people pay the bill(账单), they usually leave some money for the waiter. This is called “leaving a tip(小费)”. Leaving a tip is thought to be polite.

6 . British people are famous for saying sorry in almost every situation. They say sorry for asking a question or for the bad weather.
British people pride(为……而骄傲)themselves on their polite manners(礼貌). As a result, they use the word “sorry" quite a lot— even when they don’t really mean it! Usually, if they want to ask a stranger for the time, they would start by saying, “Sorry to bother(打扰)you. Do you know what time it is?” If they are five minutes late for a date, they would generally greet the person by saying, “Sorry, I’m late!”
That they say sorry does not only mean they feel sad for someone else because of their problems or bad luck. In the dictionary, “sorry” also means feeling regret(后悔)because they have done something wrong. And now, think about this. Normally, when they want to ask a stranger a question, they start with “Sorry to bother you.” In this situation, they aren’t saying sorry because they feel sad for that person or because they feel regret.
In the British culture, saying sorry is a way to be polite, especially to people who they don’t know very well. Besides, it also can bring them other benefits(好处)in their daily life. In a recent experiment, an actor asked different strangers on a rainy day if he could use their mobile phones to make a call. When he asked one group of strangers and asked them without saying sorry first, he was only 9% successful. However, when he said sorry to another group about the bad weather before saying his request, he was 47% successful.

8 . Middle school students have far too much homework. They usually have to sit up three or four hours every night doing their homework. Now one school in my hometown has made a rule of limiting (限制) homework. The homework is limited to an hour a day and the students have no homework on the weekend. I think this is an excellent idea that will allow (允许) students to live better and healthier lives.
Less homework will give students more time to enjoy other pastimes (休闲娱乐). I have many books which I received as gifts from my parents and friends. They have been kept there on my shelf for several years! Because of homework, I have not read a single one of them. With less homework, students will be freer to develop their interests in art, music and other hobbies.
More time free from homework will get our physical health better. Many students like sports, but they have little time to play football, basketball, volleyball and so on. They hardly have time to have a trip or take part in any social (社会的) activities. They must spend so much time solving math problems and doing grammar exercises.
