We do want help our family, friends and classmates when they’re having a hard time. But how can we help our people out in right ways?
Rachel Miller is a writer and she mentions some ways about that in her book How to Be There for Yourself and Your People.
Keep your focus on your friend.
When a friend comes to you, it’s a good idea to help them forget their terrible experience. But if you want to tell them a similar experience, it’s not always welcome.
If you do feel that your experience might be helpful to hear, Miller’s advice is to let your friend know that you went through something similar, but allow them to decide if they want to hear about it at the moment.
Ask how you can best help your friend.
You may not know what kind of help your friend wants. Just ask! Miller advises to try these questions:
“What’s the best way I can help you right now?”
“Do you need someone to talk to?”
“Would you like my advice?”
“How are you feeling about the hard experience you’re going through?”
A heartfelt “I’m sorry” is a great help.
People may shy away from saying “I’m sorry” to the people in trouble, because you cannot feel the same way as them. But Miller says a real, honest “I’m sorry” can help to make your friend feel heard and accepted. “Sometimes there isn’t a perfect way to make people feel better,” she says. “But what you need to do is to say ‘You’re not alone. I’m with you. I’m so sorry it’s happening to you.’”

Russia | Students in Russia have to learn many different subjects, including math, history, science, languages and do some practical work. But the time they spend on their homework is much less than that in China. |
China | In China, if you want to be better than others, you need to pay more attention to your homework. Most of the school students should finish homework in Chinese, math, English and some more homework which is from their own parents. It usually takes them so much time. The person who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “Fine”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.
Sometimes, people don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?”, the other person might think, “No, I disagree. I think you’re wrong.” But it isn’t very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say “I’m not sure.” It’s a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone.
People don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they want to finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says “I’ve got to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse: “Someone’s at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove.” The excuses might be real or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.

8 . Sharing means using what we have with others. One small action of sharing may change someone’s world. When we were children, we were too young to understand the true meaning of sharing. We thought only the rich were able to share. As time goes by, we get to know every person is unique (独一无二的). We all have something special. We can share not only our pocket money but also our personal feeling. For instance, we can share our positive altitude with those who are negative or upset. Encourage them to keep going by describing a bright future for them. Once we decide to share with others, we should take action at once. By doing this, we will get more and more pleasure.

Why are many students so easy to break down? Parents and schools are a main reason. Parents do almost everything for them in their daily life. while schools care more about their grades instead of developing their personality (个性).
Liu Yue, 13, is from Fujian. His mom hardly criticizes him and he always feels good about himself. When a teacher criticized him strictly, he felt surprised and sad. He began to doubt his ability.
Students should do something to make themselves mentally strong (意志坚强). An expert said, “When you are in trouble, don’t ask for help too quickly. You should try to deal with problems first by yourself. I also advise you to take an active part in sports and social activities. That can make you mentally strong.”

Trees are one of the oldest “citizens” (居民) of our Earth. They keep our air clean, reduce noise pollution, improve water quality and provide food and building materials (材料).
Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At 1 to 3 years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns (刺) to warn animals not to go near. Most young trees have large deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy.
When trees are 4 years old, they begin to grow very rapidly and become strong enough to face challenges (挑战) later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit.
It is not until the tree is 20 to 25 years old that it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. The adult tree gives us shade (树荫), oxygen (氧气) and natural beauty; it is also a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we give the adult tree proper care, it will go on to live healthily for many years.
Gradually, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, they still have their important place in nature. When a tree becomes hollow (空心的) or part of it becomes dead, it provides a home to small animals and is a source of food for many other animals.
In many ways, the life of a tree is similar to our own life experience. When we are looking at the life of a tree, we learn about that each period of life brings its own form of joy and challenge. Enjoy every minute of the life of the trees and take care of the trees!
