1 . Chinese President Xi Jinping recently replied to a letter from volunteers in Jiaxing Road, Shanghai. They help with garbage sorting (垃圾分类). In his reply, Xi said he was happy to know that the volunteers’ community has made new progress in garbage sorting. He also hopes volunteers could encourage more people to develop the habit of sorting garbage.

Since 2019, more than 22, 000 garbage stations have improved in Shanghai. A huge change has taken place in the city in recent years: people used to refuse to sort garbage, but now they are actively to sort it. Garbage sorting has become a “new fashion”. It is getting more and more popular to sort garbage.

“Sorting trash is a way to make the community (社区) a better place. For example, house prices may go up,” said Cui Fenglin, 36, one of the Shanghai volunteers. He said many people changed their minds after sharing this kind of opinions with volunteers. Sixteen-year-old volunteer Yu Yue has made posters and written passages about garbage sorting. “My classmates and I even made a cartoon to help people understand how sorting trash can influence the environment,” Yu said.

The community also makes use of technology in garbage sorting. There are special recycling machines besides the garbage bins. People scan the code (扫描二维码) on the machine, put in paper or clothes, and then get money from it.

By 2022, about 297 cities in China had fully implemented (实行) trash sorting, reported CCTV News. The whole country is going to implement trash sorting by the end of 2025.

3 . Chinese food is getting popular and the dumpling is a real Chinese food. It’s believed that Chinese dumplings were first made by Zhang Zhongjing, a famous doctor in China. So Chinese dumplings have a history of over 1, 800 years.

Everyone in China likes dumplings very much, and there are many different kinds of dumplings. Some have meat and vegetables in them and others have eggs. I like dumplings with beef and vegetables best.

A team from Toll Free Forwarding, a US company, built a 3D model of what a human might look like in the year 3000. Her name is Mindy. She looks a little bit scary. The company said the model showed how technology (科技) will change human bodies in less than 800 years.

For example, Mindy’s hands look like she is always holding a cellphone. That’s called “text claw”, according to the team. Mindy also has a much wider neck. It’s called “tech neck”. It’s from looking down at the phone for too long. Muscles (肌肉) in our necks need to be stronger to hold our heads.

Mindy also has another eyelid (眼皮). It can protect the eyes from the blue light of the screens. Her skull (头骨) is thicker. It protects the brain from the radiation (辐射) of computers and phones. Technology is so helpful that humans think less. That’s why humans may also have smaller brains in the future.

ChatGPT can write things really fast. We may spend hours researching, understanding and writing a long passage. But ChatGPT can write a good one in seconds. But if you ask bad questions, such as how to make weapons (武器), it will not give you a answer.

ChatGPT comes along at a time when AI can do many creative tasks. The things they create are difficult to tell from those made by humans. This brings many problems, such as the definition (定义) of art. The robot uses words from the Internet, so it can also pick up wrong ideas about certain groups. These are all the things that humans need to solve.

10 . Nobody likes a bully (恶霸). But bullying is a big problem around the world. According to the US National Bullying Prevention Center, one fifth students in the US have been bullied.

Nathan Fellars is an eighth grade student at Centennial Middle School in Utah, US. When he saw classmates being bullied, he knew he had to do something. “People often deal with bullying after the bullying has happened. I wanted to see if there was a way to reduce (减少) bullying before it happens at all,” Fellars told the Society for Science.

After studying more about the causes (起因) of bullying, he had an idea to make the app Bully Block. On the app, students can share their lives, whether good or bad. Others can then post responses (回复). But before the responses are posted, an AI program reads all of them. Only positive (积极的) words will be shown. Fellars believes that this will naturally stop bullying both online and in schools.
