文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要是艺术家朱莉·威利斯比较了在美国旧金山和伦敦的生活情况。

1 . Julie Willis is an artist from San Francisco who moved to London ten years ago. We asked her to compare life in San Francisco and London. Here’s what she told us.

     (1) The cities

San Francisco is a lovely city in a beautiful bay in the USA. It’s got lots of great buildings and places. It’s smaller and much more modern than London, but it’s less interesting. London has a lot more theatres and museums. The Americans are usually more interested in money than culture! The buildings and streets in London are very great, and the parks and markets are wonderful. London is not as dangerous as San Francisco. I feel much safer living here—nobody carries a gun. The police don’t carry guns either.

(2) The living

People have a higher standard (水平) of living in San Francisco because it’s much less expensive than England. For example, petrol is less than half the price and the things like food, clothes and cameras are much cheaper. It’s a shopper’s paradise and I always spend a lot of money buying things before I go back to London! It’s a bit more expensive to rent a house in London and my bills are much bigger than they were in San Francisco. So, although my salary in London is about the same as it was in the United States, I have to work harder to get the same quality of life as I had before.

(3)________

In San Francisco you can walk everywhere because it’s a small city. There’s less traffic than in London, and the public transport is great. There are cable cars to go up all the hills and electric buses which make the city much cleaner. Public transport in London is terrible and really expensive. It takes me an hour to get to work and the journey is usually stressful (紧张的). London’s dirtier too and much more polluted. The traffic is bad, because there is too many cars and the streets are narrow. But English drivers aren’t as bad as American drivers.

(4) Food

Food in the United States is much better. It’s fresher, cheaper, and there’s much more choice. Restaurants aren’t as expensive as in London and the service is much better. In some restaurants they put a clock on the table when you arrive, and if they haven’t served your meal in five minutes, they’ll give you the food free!

A.there are less people in London
B.the police carry guns
C.nobody carries a gun besides the police
D.the buildings and streets are very great
2. The writer always ________ before she goes back to London.
A.spends a lot of money buying things

A.Air pollutionB.Public transportC.Busy trafficD.City drivers
4. The writer thinks the traffic in London is ________.
A.terrible but cheapB.wonderful and cheap
C.wonderful and really expensiveD.terrible and really expensive
5. ________ is fresher, cheaper and there’s much more choice.
A.Food in LondonB.Food in the United States
C.Neither in London nor in the United StatesD.Both in London and in the United States
6. You’ll get free food in a restaurant in San Francisco if ________.
A.they put a clock on your table
B.they have served you badly
C.they haven’t served your meal in five minutes
D.the food is not delicious

2 . Choose the best answer (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)

“Mona Lisa” attracts art lovers around the world. Do you know Leonardo da Vinci also painted an “Earlier Mona Lisa” before? It will be exhibited in Shanghai next year. Joel Feldman, the general secretary of the Mona Lisa Foundation, accepted an interview about the painting and the organization recently.

Q: How was the “Earlier Mona Lisa” discovered?

A: In 1913, Hugh Blaker, a manager of the Holburne Museum in England, found the “Earlier Mona Lisa” and brought it to his museum. A year later, the painting was sent to the US for safekeeping. It was housed in the Boston Museum of Fine Art until 1918. In 1975, Henry Pulitzer, a publisher, bought the painting and kept it in the Bank of Switzerland.

Since the Mona Lisa Foundation was established in 2008, we have done lots of necessary research on the “Earlier Mona Lisa” and many high technologies were used. In the end, 28 out of the 29 experts believe this is certainly the painting created by Leonardo da Vinci.

Q: Do you remember the feeling when you first saw the “Mona Lisa” painting and this “Earlier Mona Lisa” painting?

A: I first saw the “Mona Lisa” in the Louvre as a young boy. Quite honestly I was disappointed as the painting looked quite small and dark. When I first saw the “Earlier Mona Lisa”, I was absolutely stunned. Believe me, there is really something amazing that occurs when you are in the presence of this painting.

Q: Why did you choose Shanghai for this exhibition?

A: First, Shanghai is one of world art centers. In addition, the mission of the foundation is to show the painting to the world. Therefore, we decided to begin its Asian tour and Shanghai obviously would be the first stop.

Q: Could you tell more details about the security for the painting?

A: I can’t tell you a lot. What I can say is that we paid huge amounts of money for the insurance and the painting will be exhibited in a high-tech case, and also no more than 2,000 people will be allowed to visit the painting a day. But visitors will be able to come quite close to the painting.

1. ________ was the first owner of the “Earlier Mona Lisa” in the passage.
A.The Mona Lisa FoundationB.The Holburne Museum
C.The Boston Museum of Fine ArtD.The Bank of Switzerland
2. What did the research find out?
A.The history of Leonardo da Vinci.
B.The value of the “Earlier Mona Lisa”.
C.The painter of the “Earlier Mona Lisa”.
D.The different high technologies used in the “Earlier Mona Lisa”.
3. The underlined word “stunned” is the closest in meaning to “________”.
A.surprisedB.frightenedC.boredD.worried
4. Which city will the “Earlier Mona Lisa” most probably travel to after Shanghai?
A.Los Angeles.B.London.C.Paris.D.Beijing.
5. The organization did many things to keep the painting safe, except ________.
A.buying an expensive insurance for the painting
B.using a high-tech case to show the painting

文章大意:本文主要介绍了世界上为什么会出现如此巨大的人口增长。

3 . A very important world problem is the increasing number of people who actually inhabit this planet. The limited amount of land and land resources will soon be unable to support the huge population if it continues to grow at its present rate.

So why is this huge increase in population taking place? It is really due to the spread of the knowledge and practice of what is becoming known as “Death Control”. You have no doubt heard of the term “Birth Control”. “Death Control” is something rather different. It recognizes the work of the doctors and scientists who now keep alive people who, not very long ago, would have died of a variety of then incurable diseases. Through a wide variety of technological innovations that include farming methods and the control of deadly diseases, we have found ways to reduce the rate at which we die. However, this success is the very cause of the greatest threat to mankind.

If we examine the amount of land available for this ever-increasing population, we begin to see the problem. If everyone on the planet had an equal share of land, we would each have about 50,000 square metres. This figure seems to be quite encouraging until we examine the type of land we would have. More than three-fifths of the world’s land cannot produce food.

Obviously, with so little land to support us, we should be taking great care not to reduce it further. But we are not! Instead, we are consuming its “capital”—its nonrenewable fossil fuels and other mineral deposits that took millions of years to form but which are now being destroyed in decades. We are also doing the same with other vital resources not usually thought of as being nonrenewable such as fertile soils, groundwater and the millions of other species that share the earth with us.

It is a very common belief that the problems of the population explosion are caused mainly by poor people living in poor countries who do not know enough to limit their reproduction. This is not true. The actual number of people in an area is not as important as the effect they have on nature. Developing countries do have an effect on their environment, but it is the populations of richer countries that have a far greater impact on the earth as a whole.

1. The word “incurable” in Paragraph 2 means _______.
A.commonB.widespreadC.unknownD.untreatable
2. There isn’t enough land to support human beings because _______.
A.most of the world’s land is unusable
B.there are more seas than land in the world
C.the world’s land has already been taken up
D.the world’s land is not distributed equally
3. What does “to limit their reproduction” in the last paragraph mean?
A.To control death.B.To produce less goods.
C.To practice birth control.D.To increase.
4. What do you think the writer is really concerned about?
A.Long life spans (跨度).B.Population increase.
C.The success of “Death Control”.D.Overuse of resources.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍了造成每年近300万五岁以下儿童因环境危险而死亡的原因。

4 . Inadequate drinking water and sanitation, indoor air pollution and poor living conditions, and accidents injuries and poisonings: these are just three of the causes of the nearly 3 million deaths suffered every year by children under age five due to environmental dangers.

1.3 million children under five in developing countries died from diseases caused by unsafe water supply, sanitation and hygiene each year. According to a publication by WHO, 60% of the 2.2 million deaths a year in children under five caused by acute respiratory infections (急性呼吸道感染) are associated with indoor air pollution, the lack of adequate heating and/or other unhealthy living conditions. Accidental injuries—including road traffic accidents, drowning, burns and poisonings—are the cause of over 400,000 deaths per year in children under five.

Yet, until recently, no specific efforts had been made to deal with the environmental dangers which specifically affect children. Children are not “little adults”: they are in a constant process of growth and development, and they are easily affected by the harmful substances in their environments.

Research suggests that over 40% of the global burden of disease due to environmental risk factors may fall on children under five, even though they make up about 10% of the world’s population. The WHO will focus on the main environmental threats to children’s health and development, and on a range of measures to reduce environmental impacts on children as well as children’s exposure to lead, mercury, poisons and other chemicals.

In Bangladesh and India, for example, arsenic (砷) in drinking water is a lasting problem. In some countries, concern exists about exposure to lead and any by exposure to waste sites. WHO plans on launching pilot projects to help countries assess (评估) and improve children’s environmental health in the near future.

The environment if places besides the home—above all schools, and workplaces—can be made safer for children. Schools are of particular significance, as a healthy and safe school environment can help protect children from health danger, abuse and exclusion and can foster learning.

“A commitment to child health means that dangers should be reduced in all places where children spend significant parts of their day, including the roads and forms of transport they use to get to and from these places,” said an official of WHO’s Department responsible for Environmental Health.

1. How many children under age five in developing countries die from unhealthy living conditions each year?
________________________________________________
2. Specific efforts have been made to deal with the environmental dangers which have effect on children, have they?
_________________________________________________
3. What will the WHO focus on to help the children?

5. From the article, we can infer that the leading cause of death among children under age five is _____________________________________________.
6. According to the passage, which place, besides home should be made very safe for children?

文章大意:本文通过介绍X-ray在油画辨别侦察方面的作用,说明现代科技X-ray是如何以独特的方式应用于生活。

5 . Some wonderfully creative uses of X-rays have been in the world of art. But the most impressive one is to uncover what has been covered up. Details unfolded by an X-ray of a painting can’t be seen any other way. For example, in the past, paintings were often repaired if small pieces of paint fell off the canvas (帆布). These repairs cannot be seen just by looking at the painting. It takes an X-ray to discover where the repairs have been made.

An X-ray of a painting is one of the best ways to tell if it was created by a famous painter or if it is a forgery (赝品). If there is a question as to whether an old master has painted a certain painting or not, X-rays are made and compared to those of paintings that are known to be original. If the brushstrokes (笔迹), for example, are shown to be totally different than in other work done by a certain artist, then the painting is proved to be a fake copy.

Since modern paints are usually made from different materials than paints of hundreds of years ago, the image they leave on an X-ray film looks different. This is another way X-rays can be used to spot a forgery. A modern artist will try to make a forgery look hundreds of years old by painting dirty varnish on it or by using artificial means to get the varnish to look cracked. To the naked eye the forgery may look old, but when a careful study of the X-ray image is made, the deceptions obvious.

It was common many years ago for an artist to finish a painting, decide it wasn’t any good, and paint a completely different picture on top of it. Or artists would paint over others’ work —it was their version of recycling. Taking an X-ray is the only way to find out if there is a picture underneath the picture you see with your eyes. Sometimes museums will be more interested in the painting beneath than the one on top, and will restore the older one by having the top layer painstakingly removed.

1. Why do people need X-ray to discover repairs on a painting?
A.Because the technology of X-ray is more accurate.
B.Because X-ray is much cheaper.
C.Because the law requires the painting to be tasted by X-ray.
D.Because it is cheap.
2. How to tell the real masterpiece apart from the forgery?
A.By comparing the painting with the original paintings drew by certain artist under an X-ray.
B.By removing the top layer of the painting.
C.By using some different materials to have a test.
D.By betting the vanish to look cracked
3. What is the main purpose of the article?
A.To provide information to the police who are looking for stolen art.
B.To persuade art dealers to check for fake copies before selling art.
C.To explain how modern technology can be applied in unique ways.
D.To help artists restore damaged artwork to its original appearance.
4. According to the passage, X-rays are used to ______.
A.make repairs on paintings in the past
B.identify the authenticity of an artwork
C.change the materials of a forgery
D.remove the recyclable paints
5. In Paragraph 3, the word “deception” probably means ______.
A.comparisonB.drawback
C.trickeryD.judgment
6. Which is the best title for the passage?
A.X-ray Detectives
B.Creative Uses of Technology
C.Forgery Studies
D.X-ray Painting Technique

文章大意:本文讲述了影评人Marty Klein和Jay Forry写的电影评论,以及新技术的进步使得盲人欣赏电影更容易。
6 . Answer the questions. (根据短文内容回答下列问题。)

When you think of the cinema, the phrase “watching a movie” probably comes to mind, and, in fact, moviemakers work very hard to make the pictures wonderful. But movies also contain stories, dialogues, music, and sound effects which people don’t need to see in order to enjoy.

Movie reviewer Marty Klein has created a website called Blindspots to help blind people choose movies that they can follow without the help of an assistant to explain what is happening on the screen. Klein gives movies a rating from 1 to 10 based on several factors. A movie receives a high rating if there are only a few main characters whose voices are easy to recognize. Klein also likes an interesting story without too many changes in time and place.

Of course, blind or visually impaired people can enjoy many films with the help of a friend who doesn’t mind explaining the parts of a movie that can only be seen. But that means that someone is talking during the movie, which could annoy some audience members. To solve these problems, movie theaters provide wireless headsets with which blind people can hear a recorded narration. The narration includes descriptions of the movements, scenery, and special effects that other audience members can see on screen during the movie. This allows them to listen to the narration while still hearing a movie’s music and other sounds.

Another blind movie reviewer, Jay Forry, writes movie reviews that are published on his website, Blindside Reviews. He also writes for newspapers and is a guest on radio shows. Forry became a writer after going blind at the age of 28 and deciding to go to college. His first review appeared in the college newspaper. Forry’s writing skills and sense of humor are what keep people reading his review or listening to them on the radio. After “watching” The Sixth Sense, Forry commented that he thought the movie was excellent, but that he envied (嫉妒) the boy was the main character, “He had six senses, and I only have four.”

1. What can be enjoyed without being seen at the cinema?
________________________________
2. Blindspots isn’t a website for blind people to choose movies from, is it?

3. Which word or phrase has the same meaning as blind is used in the passage?

5. What keeps people reading Forry’s review or listening to them on the radio, his writing skills or sense of humor?

文章大意:本文主要讲了温度上升与更多的暴风雪是否有关系的问题。

7 . Warming temperatures and shorter winters might sound like the end of snow days. However, rising temperatures may actually cause snowstorms to dump more snow, says David Robinson. He is a professor at a university in New Jersey. He studies climate (气候) change.

Temperature change is one of the greatest in Earth’s climate change over a long period of time. It can happen naturally or because of human activities, such as burning gas and coal. Burning these fuels produces carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and other pollutants into the atmosphere, which hold heat in the atmosphere, leading to warmer global temperatures over time.

But how could warmer temperatures lead to more snow? To get snow, you need moisture (水汽) and freezing temperatures (0℃ or less), says Robinson. Without moisture in the air, there is no precipitation (rain or snow). Robinson says there are signs that snowstorms are becoming stronger. This is because of this connection between moisture and precipitation.

“The warmer the air becomes, the more moisture it holds. So, if it’s warming and still cold enough to snow, you can get more snow,” Robinson says.

Of the 10 biggest snowfalls in D. C. region, five happened in the past 25 years, according to the NWS. During that same time period, average winter temperatures in D. C. increased. In 1996, the average winter temperature was 1.8℃. In 2020, it was 6℃.

Weather experts suggest that rising temperatures may make winter shorter and less cold. But for now, the snow is still falling. One day, winter might not have any days below the freezing temperature. Once temperatures stay above freezing, snowstorms become rain. Until then, we might continue to see strong storms.

According to Robinson, that time could come sooner than we think. He says, “When we look back, years from now, we may see that this was the breaking point.”

1. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.How Earth’s climate changes.B.What causes rising temperatures.
C.What produces carbon dioxide.D.How pollution influences climate.
2. What will the warming temperatures cause according to the text?
A.Less coal.B.Drier weather.

3. What is the purpose of paragraph 5?
A.To introduce D. C.
B.To report the biggest 10 snowstorms.
C.To support Robinson’s ideas.
D.To show the increase of temperatures.
4. What does Robinson think of the future warming temperatures?
A.Impossible.B.Serious.C.Meaningless.D.Amazing.
5. Where is the text probably taken from?
A.A science magazine.B.A story book.
C.A science fiction.D.A travel guide.

文章大意:本文讲述的是水资源的缺乏的事。尤其提到了也门这个国家,根据一项报告,也门的首都萨那到2025年的时候,就将没有饮用水了。也门政府也正在想办法解决这个问题。

8 . Imagine one day, the water taps in your house stop running. You have to buy water from shops. And still there isn’t enough water for everyone. Your mother has to save the family’s shower water to do other things. Would you be able to stand that kind of life? Probably not. But that’s what kids in Yemen are experiencing. Experts said Yemen was going to be the first country in the world to run out of water. According to a report, the capital, Sana, will run out of drinking water as early as 2025.

Because of the shortage, the government often cuts the water supply (供应). Hannah, an 18-year-old girl from Lahej, told Times. “In a good week, we’ll have a water supply all week. But then the following week there will be water only for a day or two.”

Hannah said only rich people had enough water to use. They can buy water from the shops or from the water trucks. Private companies own the trucks. They travel around the city every day to sell water—at very high prices. “A lot of people can’t afford it,” she said.

The average person in Yemen uses 100 to 200 cubic metres of water per year. That is far below the international water poverty (贫困) line of 1,000 cubic metres. The government is thinking of making use of seawater. But it will cost a lot and it may not happen soon enough to help the people of Yemen.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了麻省理工学院的研究人员研究出了新的相对安全的检测风暴方法,在水下安装监听器来观测暴风来临时产生的巨大水声,这一成果目前已经展开了应用。

10 . There are a couple of ways to forecast the destructive potential of a hurricane (飓风) so that people in the way can take adequate precautions (预防措施). Satellite images of cloud patterns can be analyzed to estimate peak wind speeds, but the estimates are often way off the mark. Specialized aircraft can fly into a storm to measure the winds directly, but the flights are costly.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology come up with a third way: listening to a storm underwater.

In a paper to be published in Geophysical Research Letters, Nicholas C. Makris and a former graduate student, Joshua D. Wilson, report a strong connection between the intensity (强度) of sound recorded by an undersea microphone in the mid-Atlantic and the wind power of a hurricane that passed over it. They say that such microphones, known as hydrophones, could be a safe and relatively inexpensive means of estimating hurricane force.

Dr. Makris and Dr. Wilson, who are now with Applied Physical Sciences Corporation, worked out the theory of underwater acoustic (声音的) monitoring of storms in a 2005 paper. “To be very frank with you, it’s a mystery what makes storms noisy underwater.” Dr. Makris said. The most popular idea currently is that it has something to do with oscillating air bubbles(气泡振动).

The researchers then went looking for experimental data to back their theory, and found it from a hydrophone placed at a depth of 2, 500 feet by the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration. It happened that Hurricane Gert passed over the area in September 1999, and a hurricane-hunter plane directly measured the wind speed at the same time. The hydrophone data showed sound intensity rising when the storm’s outside wind “wall” passed over, and again when the inside wall, the most destructive part of the storm near the eye, passed over. “We got a beautiful connection,” Dr. Makris said, “between the hydrophone data and the actual wind speeds as measured by the aircraft.”

Dr. Makris is conducting additional experiments, working with the Mexican Navy off the west coast of Mexico. The eventual goal, he said, would be permanent hydrophones in known hurricane zones or temporary ones that could be easily laid by plane or ship in the path of a coming storm.

1. How many ways of forecasting the destructive potential of a hurricane are mentioned in the passage?
