1 . Have you ever heard of National Park of Hainan Tropical (热带的) Rainforest? It is our own “Amazon”. If you travel there, what can you enjoy?
Animals
The park is home to Hainan gibbons (长臂猿). They look like monkeys, but have no tails. They eat fruits and leaves from over 130 kinds of plants. In the 1980s, there were fewer than 10 gibbons (长臂猿) in the park. In 2022, there were 36 because people protected their home and planted trees.
Plants
The park is a “live museum” of plants. It is also home to 133 kinds of national key protected plants. Cycas hainanensis (海南苏铁) is an example. It has feather-like (羽毛样的) big leaves. It grows slowly, but can live as long as 200 years. It probably won’t grow flowers or fruits in North China. But in Hainan, cycas hainanensis (海南苏铁) over 10 years old blossom (开花) and bear fruits (结果) almost every year.
Culture
Miao and Li people have lived in the park for generations (世代). Their houses look like upside-down boats. They are built above the ground to keep away animals. Li people make clothes from bark (树皮). Their history of tree bark clothing dates back to about 10,000 years ago. Some people still use bark clothing nowadays.

2 . When people talk about the human body, they usually talk about arms or legs, hands or feet, the heart or the brain. Those parts of the body are important, but we often forget about our skin (皮肤) and it is very important, too.
It tells us about the outside world—whether it is hot or cold, wet or dry. It also tells us if the body is hurt—that is when we feel pain. Skin covers our bodies. Every time we move, our skin moves, too. Try this: pull up the skin from the back of your hand and then let it go. What happens? The skin goes back to its first position (位置). That means that skin is elastic (有弹性的). We can move it and pull it but it always goes back.
Our skin seems to be very thin but it is made of two layers (层). The top layer is the one we wash every day. Do you know that this part of the body is dead? However, it is important because it is used for protecting us against dirt (灰尘) and disease.
Living skin cells (细胞) travel from the bottom (底部的) layer to the outside of the body. This takes about 27 days.
Skin has millions of very small holes, called pores (毛孔). Water cannot get into our bodies through these pores but it can get out. Pores allow water from the blood to leave the body —this water is called sweat (汗). Sweat helps to keep our bodies at the same temperature. When it is very hot, we sweat a lot, but even when it is quite cool, we sweat, too. On a cool day, when it is not hot or humid(潮湿), our bodies produce about 700 ml of sweat. That is more than 0. 5 kilo!

In the past, man did not think about the protection of the environment. Today, the world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources (资源) too quickly, and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals (化学制品). Everyone realizes today that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. Yet, with modern fishing methods, more and more fish are caught. We know that if too many trees are cut down, forests will disappear and nothing will grow on the land. Yet, we continue to use bigger and more powerful (强大的) machines to cut down more and more trees. We know that if the population of the world continues to rise at the present rate (速度), in a few years, there will not be enough food. What can we do to solve these problems?
If we eat more vegetables and less meat, we will easily get more food. Land that is used to grow crops (作物) can feed five times more people than land where animals are kept. The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control. Finally, if we educate (教育) people to think about the problems, we shall have a better and cleaner living place in the future.
