Bird’s nest
Do you know what birds use to build their nests? You may say that birds usually build their nests with sticks, leaves or grass. But do you know that birds are also building their nests with rubbish these years? The rubbish includes cigarette butts (烟头) and plastic bags.
A group of European scientists looked into about 35,000 studies on bird nests. They found that birds have used man-made things in nests almost everywhere on Earth except Antarotica. Some rubbish seems to be helpful. This is why birds “like” putting it in their nests. For example, cigarette butts have special smell, so they can keep insects away and protect the baby birds. Plastic bags are useful in keeping the animals warm, and other hard things, such as paper cards, can make nests stronger.
However, in the end, human rubbish may only bring more harm to birds. The toxic (有毒的) chemicals in cigarettes hurt the baby birds. They may get sick or have shorter lives, according to a study. To make matters worse, if the cigarette still burns when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set fire to the nest. Pieces of fishing net may also trap birds, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves. If the baby birds eat other kinds of rubbish by accident, they will also get hurt. Our bird friends in the air are feeling the bad effects of humans polluting the environment.

How can you combine(结合)games with English learning? The answer is Wordle! Wordle players must correctly guess a five-letter word with just six tries. You either win by guessing it or lose because you run out of tries.
As you guess, the game gives you hints(提示). For example, if a letter is correct and in the right place, it turns green, If the letter is not in the word, it turns gray. If the letter is part of the word but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. These clues make the game into a puzzle.
The game has been popular since Oct 2021. By the end of Jan 2022, there were more than 2. 7 million players. People from all over the world post their results on social media.
You need knowledge to win this game, not just luck. Every syllable(音节) in an English word contains at least one vowel(元音), so finding vowels is a useful strategy. For example, in the word "smile", there is only one syllable and there is one vowel, “i” . I recently played this game and found it very interesting. First, I guessed the word “table”. Only “e” was green. Then, I guessed “crane” and the “n” turned green as well. In the end, I guessed “shine” and I was correct!
This game is not only fun but also tests our English ability. Although there are only five-letter words in Wordle, completing each puzzle takes knowledge of English spelling patterns. Wordle is a perfect game to have fun and learn English at the same time.
