As we all know, there is very short of water in lots of areas in Africa. However, there is a magical tree which can help to solve the water problem. It is called the “sacred (神圣的) tree of Africa”-baobab tree (猴面包树).
A baobab tree is huge like an upside-down carrot. It can grow so large that it requires more than 40 people holding hands to circle it. Actually, most baobab trees are not very tall, only about ten meters.
A baobab tree is full of treasures. It is said that if everyone in Africa had a 10-meter-tall baobab tree, it would solve more than 50% of their food problems. In hot Africa, water is the most needed. When the rainy season comes, the baobab tree starts to hold water in its body. The baobab tree is said to be the most water-holding tree. It can hold thousands of kilograms of water in its body. Local people usually cut a hole in the tree with a knife and get clean water from it. The baobab tree leaves are a bit like spinach (菠菜) leaves. True to its Chinese name, the fruit of the baobab tree tastes like bread. But it’s not like bread with cream. It tastes dry. Local people seldom get stomach problems because of eating it.
Baobab trees are not only useful for humans, but for animals in nature! Their fruit can be good food for monkeys, lizards and other African animals. Their leaves can also be eaten to get enough water. The branches of a baobab look like a root, making it a perfect home to birds.
Indeed, baobab trees are the “tree of life” for Africans. The tall, straight baobab trees act like lighthouses. As the African saying goes, “Baobab trees lit up against the dark ‘African Sky’.” They light up not only the night sky, but also our respect for nature.

Have you ever dreamed of travelling all the way over the rainbow? Well, it’s easier than you think. All you need to do is to book a plane ticket to Rainbow Mountain in Peru (秘鲁).
Rainbow Mountain is a beautiful natural wonder. It lies in the Andes in Cusco (库斯科的安第斯山脉). As its name suggests, the mountain has different colours.
But why is it in yellow, green, red and purple? The reason is the ice that covered the area centuries ago. When it started to melt (融化), the water mixed with the minerals (矿物质) in the ground and turned the earth into many colours.
If you plan your trip to the mountain, try to go during warmer months when there is less rain or snow. Rain or snow makes the climbing more difficult and the colours will look less beautiful. The best time is from March to November, when there are blue skies and pleasant weather. At the same time, visit it in the morning or evening, either right after sunrise or right before sunset. Very sunny days may make you not take nice photos.
To get to Rainbow Mountain, you should first travel to Cusco—a province in the south of Peru. Then you can take a drive to Qesoyuno. From there you can start the journey on foot. It takes about a two-or-three-hour walk to the top. This is really the best way, but the trip is very difficult. Because the mountain sits at a very high altitude (海拔) about 5,200 meters above the sea level, so bring enough water and take your time.

5 . Have you watched the recent TV Three-Body? Changed by Liu Cixin’s science book The Three-Body Problem, the show is very popular with people. One of the most exciting part must be Operation Guzheng.
In order to find the important information on a huge ship, people plan to cut the ship into pieces. They set up many thin strings (线) across the river, which are made by high technology. Looking like Guzheng, the strings quietly cut the steel ship into pieces as if the ship was soft tofu!
Is it possible to cut ships with thin strings in real life? In fact, strings are very good at cutting. For example, the egg cutting machine uses thin strings to cut eggs into pieces. A kite line can easily hurt people if it gets circle around their necks. This is because the thin strings have a very small contact area, leading to a high intensity of pressure (压强) when they cut things.
In the program, the strings are as thin as human hair. To cut the ship, the pressure needs to be 200 MPa. How strong is that pressure? Imagine an elephant standing on a string! In real life, scientists won’t be able to make such thin strings that wouldn’t easily break, at least for years to come. The cutting will also create lots of heat. We don’t have the things to bear (忍耐) that high temperature while it’s also thin enough to cut through. It’s still far away from the technology in the program.

6 . Look around and you’ll see people busy on their smartphones. Smartphones do make our lives easier. But have you ever thought about what they mean to your eyes?
According to a study, half of British people own smartphones and they spend an average (平均) of two hours a day using them. There has been a 35% increase in the number of people in the UK who suffer from shortsightedness (近视) since smartphones were introduced there in 1997.
Staring (盯) at smartphones for long time gives you dry eyes. When looking at something in the distance, your eyes automatically blink (自动眨眼) a certain number of times. However, when you look at things closer to your face, the blinking slows down. This reduces the amount of tears and causes discomfort in your eyes. Another bad habit is using smartphones in dark rooms before going to sleep. If you look at a bright screen while your pupils (瞳孔) become larger, too much light enters your eyes. This can do harm to the eyes and cause a disease called glaucoma (青光眼).
While you’re probably not going to stop using to your smartphone, there are a few things you can do to protect your eyes. Hold your phone at least 30 centimetres away from your eyes when using it. Take a break every hour and try the following: look at something at least five meters from you and then focus on the tip of your nose. Repeat this several times. 7 . Each summer, you hear news that some sports players are sent to hospital because it is too hot. Our bodies can’t be outside in the sun for a long time. So in hot summers, be careful about playing sports outside.
Firstly, to play sports safely in hot weather, you must drink water. Sports drinks are great for athletes, but they have so much sugar that they’ll dehydrate (使脱水) you more. However, drinking a few bottles of sports drinks will be good for you.
Secondly, be sure to take enough breaks to let your body rest. If your coach doesn’t let you take enough breaks in the heat, don’t wait until you feel uncomfortable. Just be honest with your coach when you need breaks.
Thirdly, when you have a break, don’t sit in the sun. With the sun beating down on you, you’ll only heat up and sweat (冒汗) more. Take a seat under a tree, or even better, go indoors for a little while. Cooling yourself down can help you stay active longer.
Fourthly, remember that the earlier in the day you start your exercise, the cooler it will be. If you can start practice before the sun comes up, you have a few good hours to practise in the cool hours of the morning. Also, the earlier you practise, the earlier you can finish the exercise. If you need more practice time, come back to the field later in the evening, when the sun is setting.
Last but not least, you should watch what you eat. Eat food which is high in water, starch (淀粉) and carbohydrate (糖类), but be sure to get a good balance in your diet.

9 . Autistic (自闭的) children are also known as “children of the stars”. They may have difficulties communicating with other people, but music, as a kind of artistic language, can open their hearts. By combining music with mobile technology, three students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University have tried to help them with an app called Starrypia.
Tan Yilan, Zhang Junwei and Cai Yu spent five months building their AR-gamified music therapy app for children with autism. Autistic children use the app to scan things around them and they get clips (片段) of music as well as cartoon images. Then they form these clips of music again to create songs, which would be recorded in their music diaries.
“This is actually a kind of music therapy, through which autistic children can better express themselves. The process also trains their abilities of cognition (认知), listening and concentration,” said Tan. With AR interaction, the app encourages children to scan and tell the differences of all kinds of dolls, animals and plants. They even designed different levels, guiding users from their surroundings to nature.
According to the app’s developers, traditional music therapy is usually taken in hospitals. Autistic children sit in front of computers learning some music courses. But Starrypia makes the process more like a game, drawing children’s interest, reducing children’s resistance (抵触). Besides, it can be used anytime and anywhere, making the therapy lighter and easier.
Starrypia will soon be showed on the App Store. The developers are also preparing to sell the music works created by autistic children in the digital form of NFT (非同质化代币),and return the money to their families.
When they tested the APP on autistic children, they got good responses, not only in professional terms but on the children’s faces.” I saw their smiles as they played with Starrypia, making everything worth it,” said Tan.
