1 . Summer is almost here and for many it means — summer camp! In Guffey, Colorado USA, there is a very special camp each summer — Nighthawk Ranch.
Nighthawk Ranch is a camp for kids aged 10 to 18 who are recovering (康复) from cancer (癌症). Tom and Dorothy Evans started the camp to provide a good place for those children, helping them build hope and confidence (信心) in their future.
Each session of the camp is organized (被组织) for 7 kids at most, and each session lasts one week. All the sessions at Nighthawk Ranch are free! Many people and organizations give away money to Nighthawk Ranch, so the campers and their families don't need to pay anything.
At the camp, each camper needs to look after a horse for the week, and they will learn to ride the same horse. Also, campers get to experience other activities, like water sports, archery (射箭) and arts.
Most of the campers start the week a little unfriendly to each other, and a little shy around the horses. By the time the last day comes, they are completely different children! It is great to see the changes in them.
Nighthawk Ranch is so much more than a summer camp. It's a truly wonderful experience for children and their families.

In the past, man did not think about the protection of the environment. Today, the world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources (资源) too quickly, and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals (化学制品). Everyone realizes today that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. Yet, with modern fishing methods, more and more fish are caught. We know that if too many trees are cut down, forests will disappear and nothing will grow on the land. Yet, we continue to use bigger and more powerful (强大的) machines to cut down more and more trees. We know that if the population of the world continues to rise at the present rate (速度), in a few years, there will not be enough food. What can we do to solve these problems?
If we eat more vegetables and less meat, we will easily get more food. Land that is used to grow crops (作物) can feed five times more people than land where animals are kept. The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control. Finally, if we educate (教育) people to think about the problems, we shall have a better and cleaner living place in the future.

4 . ① Man has known more and more about space today. Space is not only wonderful but also dangerous. While working in space, astronauts are facing danger.
② Scientists have found out that radiation (辐射) is the greatest danger to astronauts in space. When astronauts are working in space, they are in danger of radiation from the sun and other stars, which is bad for their health. The damage of radiation is difficult to discover until their children or even grandchildren are born. Some special medicine may work a little, but there isn’t really helpful medicine.
③ Space rubbish is also a great danger to astronauts. There are 9000 man-made (人造) things flying in space. About 30% of these are man-made satellites (卫星), 10% are spaceships, and others are space rubbish. Even a small piece of these knocked against a spaceship window and did some damage. Scientists are watching and telling any possible danger all the time. They are working on helpful ways to do with space rubbish.
④ Although space is really dangerous, everyone on the earth is interested in it. In the near future, it may become usual for people to spend a few days in a space hotel. We may even choose to leave the earth and live in space for a few years. So we should care for space and do something to help improve the space environment.

In China there are around 130 different languages in different cities and lots of dialects (方言). These dialects come from about eight different language groups. Each group is quite different. For example, a Mandarin (普通话) speaker in northern China would probably understand very little Cantonese (粤语).
Dialects are necessary parts of history. Sheng Guangqi, a teacher at Shandon g University, says, “We can learn about the history of a place by looking at its dialect.” For example, in Shanxi, there are still many people who call matches “qu deng”, which means “get a light”. In the old days,“qu deng” was a piece of small wood with some powder on it. People used it to make fire.
Sheng thinks we can also learn about the culture from dialects. They are as important as Mandarin. “Mandarin is useful in many formal (正式的) situations. But in some art performances, such as local operas and short plays, dialects play an important role,” he said.
Although it is necessary to protect dialects, Zhang Haoming, an expert from the Ministry of Education, said making Mandarin popular is still the most important thing. “We will further promote (推广) Mandarin. At the same time, we will also protect disappearing languages and the cultural meaning behind these languages,” he said.
1. How many language groups are dialects from in China?2. What can we learn from dialects according to Sheng?

7 . Are you still doing the V sign for victory? It’s out. The latest popular hand gesture is to curl (卷曲) both of your hands and put them together to make a heart shape. Known as “hand heart”, many young stars in the US including Justin Bieber, Blake Lively and Taylor Swift have done the move in recent photos.
“The heart-hand gesture means something between ‘I love you’ and ‘thank you’” said the country singer Taylor Swift, “It’s a sweet, simple message which you can send without saying a word.” Taylor Swift often puts her hands above her head in the heart shape at her concerts. And she is believed to be the first to make the gesture popular. Last month during a charity show, Justin Bieber and his superstar friends did it to help out three kids whose parents were killed in a car accident. The gesture became a real hit after that.
“It used to take longer for nonverbal (非语言的) culture to move. But now, with smart phones and the Internet, it’s much faster.” said Patti Wood, an American language expert (专家).
In Korea (韩国), the hand heart has been popular for a long time in a different way. People there like making a “bigger heart” by putting their hands above their heads and making a heart shape with their arms. It means “I love you.”

Here are some steps (步骤) you should follow. But always remember to look for medical care after first aid (急救) if the wound (伤口) is serious.
Broken bones (骨头): Take away clothing from the wound. Use an ice pack. Don’t move the hurt body part while waiting for the doctor to arrive.
Animal bites (咬伤): Wash the bite area (部位) with soap and water. Bandage the wound with a clean cloth if it is bleeding. If the bleeding has stopped, cover the area with a bandage and take the person to the hospital. Make sure you remember what kind of animal it is so that the doctor can find the right way to treat (治疗) him or her at once.
Fainting (昏厥): Have him or her lie with feet lifted (抬起) a little. Don’t move the body if you think there might be wounds from the fall. Make sure he or she can breathe and let in fresh air. Clean the person’s face with a cool cloth.

10 . What should you take when you take an exam? Pen, an eraser, a ruler… don’t forget a bottle of water!
Scientist at the University of East London and the University of Westminster did a study on 447 students. Only 111 of them took something to drink. Scientist then compared their exam results with their normal schoolwork grades. They found those who had brought drinks with them all got better grades by between 2 and 10 percent.
“We don’t know why drinking water can be helpful. But scientists said having enough water in our bodies may also cut down nervousness. This kind of feeling would be bad for exam performances,” said Chris Pawson, PHD of the University of East London.
“Whatever the explanation is, it is clear that students should try hard to stay hydrated (含水的) during exams,” he added.
So next time, when you are going to have a big exam, try bringing a bottle of water with you. Who knows—it may help you pass the exam.
