文章大意:本文介绍了中国南方人和北方人在生活方式上的一些不同。

1 . Do you still remember the debate (争论) between sweet and salty zong zi during Dragon Boat Festival? It seems that the differences between northerners and southerners have always been a popular topic among Chinese.

Now another difference has drawn wide attention: The way northerners and southerners shop for food at markets.

People from southern China might say they prefer to buy what they need for just one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy just half a Chinese cabbage, two potatoes and 0.25 kilograms of beef at a time.

However, one may be laughed at if he does this in the north. Instead, buying vegetables and meat enough for a week is usual, reported China Daily.

Also, when you go to the market in the south, you can buy a small amount of fruit, such as an apple or pear. Shop owners even help you peel (削皮) and cut them. But hardly do shop owners in the north offer such service.

The difference could be because of the different climate.

Food can be kept for a long time in the north, as it is usually cold and dry there. Many northerners have the habit of stocking up (囤货) on food.

But because of the hot and wet weather in the south, southern Chinese prefer to buy just enough food for one meal or one day. Otherwise, the food may go bad.

Maybe these debates about differences help us Chinese know more about each other.

1. The story is mainly about ________.
A.the debate between sweet and salty zong zi
B.the different food at southern and northern markets
C.the differences between southerners and northerners
D.the different shopping habits of southerners and northerners
2. What do northerners think of a person who buys only two potatoes?
A.Smart.B.Funny.C.Poor.D.Patient.
3. Why do southerners and northerners shop so differently?
A.Because northerners are richer than southerners.
B.Because southerners usually eat less at each meal.
C.Because the local climate influences their shopping habits.
D.Because there are more shops in the south than in the north

Hear and Say believes parents should add a hearing test (测试) to the back-to-school list every year. 4 . What’s causing global warming? Is it a man-made disaster(灾难)? Or are temperatures simply changing naturally? Whatever the case is, we can at least try to slow things down. But how?

The Nicodemus Wilderness Project suggests that we should plant trees. If the Earth has more trees, greenhouse gases will be reduced. Trees also cut down on water pollution, and provide habitats for wildlife to live in. What’s more, they improve human health by producing oxygen (氧气) and improving air quality. In fact, if we plant one tree, just one, it will have lots of benefits for our planet. A tree not only takes in a lot of harmful greenhouse gases over its lifetime, but also produces much oxygen for people. And it provides the cooling effect like an air conditioner does.
In fact, lots of people have already done so. Tree planting is becoming more and more popular as a way to take part in protecting the environment. The Canopy Project planted one million trees in 2010 as part of the AVATAR Home Tree Initiative. In total, trees were planted in 16 countries. In Belgium, the Organization for Forests worked with private land owners to help them plant trees. In Germany, a young man named Felix Finkbeiner has been leading a global movement to plant more trees. He was nine when he came up with the idea of planting trees around the world. And, what can you do to help? Well, you could go to your local garden center and buy a tree, although you’d need to get advice on how to look after it properly so that it can survive (生存). Besides, you can join a tree planting project.

A.cut down on light pollutionB.take in a lot of oxygen
C.provide the cooling effectD.produce many greenhouse gases

文章大意:本文主要介绍了几种植物与天气的关系。

5 . When I was young, I lived in Scotland with my parents. I had a good time there. One morning, I ran to the garden(花园), and said to the old gardener. “Today I am going up the mountain.”

“No, no, Missey, not today,” he said, “It will rain.”

“No, it will not rain.” I said. “The sun is up. ”

“I care for no suns. The pimpernel(海绿) says it will rain, so it will. Flowers, always tell the truth. When they say rain, go and get your umbrella.” said the old man.

Sure enough, by noon the rain was pouring down. After that, I looked with great respect(崇敬)at the flower. But the pimpernel is not the only plant that is a “weather prophet”(预言者).

If you find the African marigolds(金盏花) shut(合上) after seven o’clock in the morning, you may be pretty sure that there will be a rainy day. Most “weather prophet” plants shut up for rain. Tulips(郁金香) are careful not to open their cups very wide in the morning if it is probably going to rain. The cause of the opening and closing may be the difference in light. Perhaps these plants shut their flowers because of the lack of light.

But some plants open for rain. The verbenas(马鞭草) are one kind of them. They love the shade(阴凉) and become smaller in a strong light. The roses make no changes. The light seems to make no difference to them.

On the whole, if you go into your garden, and find tulips, marigolds shut, you’d better not go for picnics or long walks.

1. Why did the old gardener think it would rain?
A.The sun told him.B.The cloud told him.
C.The weather report told him.D.The pimpernel told him.
2. Which one is right about the “weather prophets” plants?
A.They love shade.B.They tell about the weather.
C.They open for rain and light.D.They become smaller in a strong light.
3. When can you probably go out for a picnic?
A.When the verbenas do not shut.B.When the roses shut in the sunshine.
C.When the tulips open wide in the daytime.D.When the African marigolds shut after 7:00 a.m.
4. What does the underlined word “lack” mean in the passage?
A.Not enough.B.Not strange.C.Not typical.D.Not clear.
5. What is the passage mainly about?
A.The skills of growing flowers well.
B.An interesting experience of mine.
C.The importance of growing flowers in the garden.
D.The relationship between some flowers and weather.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了不同的天气对人类的影响。

8 . Different weather makes people feel different. It influences (影响) health, intelligence (智力) and feelings.

In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the northeast and the middle west, it is very hot sometimes and very cold sometimes. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.

The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 study by scientists showed that the IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often do worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).

Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.

Low air pressure (气压) may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. There is “good weather” for work and health. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.

Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful, or unhappy today? It may be the weather’s fault.

1. ________ can have a bad effect on health.
A.Hot and wet weatherB.Good weatherC.Warm weather
2. People may have more intelligence when ________ comes.
A.a rainB.very hot weatherC.a wind
3. In “good weather” of 18℃, ________.
A.people are in better healthB.people are very sadC.people can’t do their work well
4. What is the best title of the passage?
A.Weather Influences People’s Health
B.Weather and People’s Lives
C.Temperature and People’s Intelligence
