Would you like to sail(启航) to an island? If your answer is “yes”, set sail with us for a world-famous island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. Where are we going? Easter Island!
The name “Easter Island” comes from Dutch explorer(探索家) Jacob Roggeveen. He was the island’s first visitor,on Easter Sunday, 1722. The island is famous for its huge statues(雕塑) . They are called moai(摩埃) and were created by the early Rapa Nui people between 1100 and 1680.
The statues were carved out of solidified volcanic ash(火山灰). The Rapa Nui carvers used only stone chisels(凿子) to create these grand statues. A single moai statue could take a team of six men about one year to finish. Experts believe each statue might represent(代表) a past leader of a native family.
Many statues remain in the quarry(采石场), but some were removed to other areas of Easter Island. Some of the statues weigh over 80 tons. So how did the Rapa Nui people remove these heavy statues up to 11 miles away without wheels or animals?

There is a festival in China that has three names. It’s known as the Chongyang Festival. Also, it is called the Double Ninth Festival because it falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar(阴历). Finally it has been Senior’s Day(老人节) since1989. This year, it will fall on Oct 25.
There are many traditions for this festival. In the past, people climbed mountains, drank chrysanthemum(菊花) wine, and wore a plant called zhuyu to celebrate it. Climbing mountains in autumn brings people close to nature and it’s good for health. Both chrysanthemum and zhuyu are also clean plants and they can clean houses and make people healthy.
In China, nine has the similar pronunciation with the word “forever”, meaning long life. So the Chinese government set the day as the Senior’s Day in 1989—a day torespectthe old. Many companies and communities organize autumn trips for old people. Young people bring elders to the countryside to enjoy nature. They also give them gifts.

Eric Ahstrom came up with the idea. Early in 2016, Ahstrom became bored at the growing rubbish on the road during his daily bike ride to his planting farm. Since picking up rubbish while on his bike was hard to do, Ahistrom began joining the activity into his daily runs.
“I was surprised at so much junk in nature,” he said to the people around, “The same bottle could lie on the road for several weeks without anyone picking it up, so I started doing it. I felt happy to clean up a small piece.”
Other joggers soon joined Ahlstrom. By the end of 2016, the activity had become so popular that official “plogging” events took place all across Sweden. Many groups of runners also took part in it. 10 . Are you happy most of the time? Or do you easily get angry sometimes? Everyone has a different temperament (脾气). It’s usually believed that both genes (基因) and the environment may influence people’s temperament in different ways. Scientists have found that the season of the birth also plays a role.
Scientists from Budapest, Hungary, studied 400 university students. In the study, the students needed to finish some questions to know which of four kinds of temperament they most had. From the questions, scientists found that the students always answered sth. Like “I love to deal with new projects, even if it is risky”. These answers were then connected with their birthdays.
They discovered that people born in summer easily change between sad and happy moods, compared with the people born in winter. Those who always feel positive are mostly born in spring or summer.
The study also found that those born in autumn less probably had a mood ofdepressionwhich may easily drive them to cry, while those in winter were not easier to be angry.
Scientists said that this was probably because the seasons had an influence on certain chemicals in the human body. And the chemicals are important to control people’s moods even in adult life. “It seems that when you are born may increase or decrease your chance of developing certain moods disorders (紊乱),” scientist Xenia Gonda told the Telegraph.
