1 . What is the difference between a fear and a phobia(恐惧症)?Somebody might have a fear of dogs. But if the fear has started to change a person's life,he or she probably has a phobia.

Flying may be the safest way to travel, but many people are scared of doing it. Fear of heights is also very common. For example,Spiderman actor Tobey Maguire can't stand high places. However,Tobey is not afraid of spiders that most people are afraid of. Rupert Grint, who plays in the Harry Potter movies,is(A)in fear of spiders.

(B)Some people have phobias that are more unusual. For example, cats are very cute for most of us,but not for such powerful people in history as Alexander the great and Napolean Bonaparte. Actor Nicole Kidman says,"I'm not scared of snakes or spiders, but I'm scared of butterflies. Sometimes when I came home from school, the biggest butterfly I had ever seen would be just sitting on our front gate. I would climb over the fence, move slowly to the side of the house,or do anything to avoid having to go through the front gate." 2 . The human brain weighs about 1. 4 kilograms, but it can hold much more information than most computers. However, there is another difference between humans and computers. Computers don't forget information they are given, but humans often do. No one remembers everything, and luckily we don't usually have to.

But everyone can improve their memory if they want to. Here are some suggestions.

Try to use new information immediately. For example, if you meet someone who says“Hi! I'm Carlos,”don't just say“Hello. " Repeat the person's name. Say“(1) __________ "

Break a big number into smaller parts. For example, it's hard to memorize 109244153. But if you break it into three parts-109/244/153-it becomes easier.

Write out what you need to remember over and over again. This will help you keep it in mind longer, especially for memorizing formulas or facts.

Always review information. If you bring what you've learned back to your mind, they become easier to remember. For example, before you go to sleep, it's a good idea to review the new things you learned that day.

Discuss with a friend. It is always easier to remember things through discussions. You can have a discussion about what's right and what's wrong, and it will lead to the right answer.

Never tell yourself that you have a bad memory. You can always do something to help improve your memory. And everyone's memory gets better if they use it often enough.

10 . There is an English saying, "Laughter is the best medicine. " Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to study laughter and the influence it has on the human body. They have found that laughter can really improve people's health.

Tests were carried out to study the influence of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts , blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar influence to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works on several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be very helpful.

Other tests have shown that laughter seems to be able to reduce the influence of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that stood the pain for the longest time was the group that listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain that makes both stress and pain less.

As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics (诊所) , in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce useful influence.

1. Many people were serious about the saying "Laughter is the best medicine. "
2. Laughter has the same influence on the body as physical exercise do.
3. It seems that the group without listening to funny programs can stand the pain a little longer.
4. The brain can produce a kind of chemical to make both stress and pain less.
