One hundred years ago in industrial countries, children worked 18 hours a day in a factory at age seven. The factory owner could beat a child who fell asleep or was not fast enough. Both parents and teachers could do the same.
Today, there are many laws about children all over the world. Some people think children must obey (遵守) rules or they should be punished (惩罚), others do not agree. The Intuits or Eskimos in Alaska almost never punish their children. The parents don’t hit them. If the children go too far, the parents punish them by making fun of them.
Children in other parts of the world are not as lucky as Eskimo children. American parents can spank (打臀部) their children at home, but a teacher cannot hit a child in a public school. This is also true in Germany. In contrast (对比), it is against the law for anyone to hit a child in Sweden. Swedish parents cannot spank their children. What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape (逃离)? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following passage.
Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible, learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury (受伤).
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average (平均高度的) person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head near the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leaked (渗) into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement (水泥) might end in injury. Trees and grass can help to reduce (减轻) the risk of the injury.

8 . Education is very close in my heart. My father grew up in a very small village in China. In those days, not many villagers could read. So my father opened a night school to teach them how to read. With his help, many people learned to write their own names; with his help, many people learned to read newspaper for the first time; with his help, many women were able to teach their children how to read. As his daughter, I know what education means to the people, especially those without it. After generations (几代人) of hard work, China has come a long way in education. In China, Spring Bud Education Program (春蕾计划) has helped over 3 million girls go back to school. Many of them have finished university education and they are doing well at work.
Education is about equality (平等). In poor countries and areas, the number of school dropouts (辍学) is surprising. We hope to do more for the education of these places.
Education is about the young people. Young people are the future. Education is important because it not only gives young people knowledge and skills but also helps them become responsible (有责任感的) persons.
