文章大意:本文主要讲述了只有通过亲身经历,我们才能真正学到东西。只有通过经历和接受错误及失败,我们才能前进。失败是不可避免的,但是从失败中学习和成长是美好的。

1 . The experience itself is the best way to learn, because otherwise (否则) it wouldn’t be us who learned, but those who lived the experience. Only through experiences and accenting mistakes and failures (失败) can we move forward.

We could say that life is a journey of learning, and the only way to get the better of it is by living. We never learn through the experiences of others. It is true that at birth we depend on adults to survive (生存) but it is also true that we try our best to have our own experiences to learn, and then grow.

To learn, we need to discover, fail and be right. That is learning by trying and making mistakes until we find our way to success. Since we were very little, we learned more from our own experiences than from the advice of adults. By living the experience itself, we internalize (内化) it meaningfully and deeply. So, most of these teachings will stay in our memory.

If we want to learn, grow and improve ourselves, we are going to fail. However, getting up and moving on makes us stronger, braver and smarter. It gives us a collection of reasons to feel proud. Blaming (指责) ourselves for failing is not accepting our human condition and losing the opportunity to continue learning and moving forward. We could say that the more mistakes we make, the more we are living.

We are becoming stronger after our failures, getting up after falling and getting back on feet even when being wrong hurts. So, the best way is living different experiences, without fear of the result. In order to grow, we must move forward and move on.

Falling is inevitable. We do it from the time we are very small, when we learn to walk, ride a bike. Failing is inevitable when we want to move forward, reach our goals or change something that does not make us happy. However, it is wonderful to learn and discover our power.

1. Which of the following is an example of learning through our own experiences?
A.Depending on adults to grow.
B.Following the advice of others.
C.Keeping on walking after falling.
D.Blaming ourselves for failing.
2. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.We accept ourselves by blaming.
B.Failing is the first step of learning.
C.Mistakes show the facts we living.
D.We make fewer mistakes when growing.
3. The underlined sentence “Falling is inevitable” probably means _______.
A.it’s harmful that we will probably fall
B.it’s terrible that we will probably fail
C.it’s difficult that we will probably fall
D.it’s certain that we will probably fail
4. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To advise us to learn from our own experiences.
B.To show failing is sure to happen while learning.
C.To offer us some ideas on how to learn better.
D.To suggest we face mistakes more bravely.

文章大意:本文为一篇议论文。文章主要讨论了参与奖是否是必要的。

2 . At the end of many sports events and competitions, all the contestants are honored for their effort. But in a world where not everyone can be a winner, does getting a consolation prize(安慰奖)actually improve a child’s self-esteem?

Participation awards have been around for at least 100 years, but lately they have come under fire for killing children’s sense of competition. Yet that is exactly the opposite of what these medals do for little ones, says psychologist and parenting coach Emily Pagone.

When preschoolers and kindergartners compete, they don’t know the expectations adults have for them, Pagone says. Offering them a trophy(奖杯)or medal can highlight the skills that the losers showed and encourage the sportsmanship of all the players.

But what really makes a participation award worthwhile is the conversation that comes with it. “When the caregivers around the children recognize their abilities, talents and strengths, children are placed in a position to learn about the expectations of the situation. And pointing out what kids do well can also build their self-confidence.” Pagone says.

Still, there is one problem with this system: students may rely too much on rewards from outside sources to motivate themselves. It’s valuable for them to play soccer not only because they want to earn something to decorate their rooms, but also because they enjoy the sport. They won’t always get prizes for doing their best, so it’s important to build an inner desire to push through challenging times.

For this reason, Pagone recommends discontinuing the use of participation awards around first grade. But not all experts agree that is best. Positive feedback can also benefit older kids and adults, keeping them coming back to their hobby even after a tough practice or season, says Kelly LaPorte, clinical director at a counseling center. That lesson of celebrating the effort and not just the result remains important throughout a person’s life.

Trophies and medals for preteens and teens should also be paired with conversations, particularly to prepare them to deal with loss. Sometimes this means letting them take a five-minute walk to calm down after a match. Other times it just requires allowing them to express their feelings. A “perfect world” would include participation awards for kids and postgame reflections with caregivers and coaches.

1. What do participation awards do to little children according to Pagone?
A.They kill their sense of competition.B.They encourage sportsmanship of all players.
C.They meet kids’ expectations for the game.D.They make players ignore the sports skills.
2. Which of the following statements about participation awards might Pagone agree?
A.They get in the way of helping children build self-confidence.
B.They might prevent kids from building an inner desire for the sport.
C.They benefit both little children, older kids and adults in learning.
D.Their value lies in that they celebrate the effort rather than the result.
3. What is the author’s attitude towards participation awards?
A.They are more beneficial than harmful.B.They are more harmful than beneficial.
C.They can be effective but have limitations.D.They should be replaced with conversations.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Are Participation Awards Still Necessary?B.How Do Participation Awards Impact Children?
C.What is the Myth about Participation Awards?D.Why Should Participation Awards be Abandoned?

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文,作者通过讲述迈克准备考试的经历,告诉我们列一个“不能做的事情”清单的重要性。
3 . 阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

To Have a Not-to-do List

Like most people, you probably have a to-do list to help you finish a task. However, I would also suggest you make a not-to-do list. This list works well with the to-do list and it might be even more important. Let me explain.

This is Mike. He loves video games and plays them every day. But he also has an important exam coming up. So Mike puts studying on his to-do list. That day, Mike picked up the books and studied for half an hour. Then he took a short break and played some games. However, he got so into the game that he played for three hours.

The next day, Mike took on the challenge of studying in a different way. He decided to make a not-to-do list as well. And what he wrote down was, “No video games until 7:00 pm.” Mike went to study, did it for half an hour, and then took a break. However, he didn’t get on his computer like the day before because he didn’t allow himself to play at that time. Instead, he drank a glass of water. Then he returned to studying for three hours more on that day.

Mike realized that having no restrictions (限制) was the problem. He was always choosing between work and free time. Because enjoying himself was an easier choice, hardly any work got done as a result. So Mike made a not-to-do list.

Sometimes what you choose not to do matters more than what you decide to do. We shouldn’t just limit our “bad” behaviors but our “good” behaviors as well. For example, practicing the piano could be considered a good habit. But when you have other more important things in the moment, the piano becomes nothing more than a distraction (注意力分散). However, there’s one thing that should never end up on your not-to-do list. That is to learn something new every day.

1. What did Mike write on his not-to-do list?
________________________________________
2. How long did Mike study the next day?
________________________________________
3. According to Paragraph 4, what problem did Mike realize?
________________________________________
4. Would you like to make a “not-to-do list”? Why or why not? (At least two reasons.)

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要讲述了胜利并不等于成功,并用自己做教练的经历来论述这个观点,作者认为激励更加重要。

4 . I have a question for all of us. Is all winning success? Winning is really, really fun. But I am here to share my idea: Winning does not always equal success.

All around the world, we have created the win-at-all-cost culture. As a society, we honor the champion (冠军). We cheer for those people who win championships. Winning at all costs has become acceptable. We have become so focused on that end result instead of the process, and particularly when the end result is a win, usually how we got there often gets swept under the proverbial rug.

We need to redefine (重新定义) success. Real success is developing champions in life for our world, win or lose. We may be able to plan our way to a win, but we can’t plan our way to success.

Back to 1990, when I was first made the head coach of the UCLA Women’s Gymnastics Team, the best I could do was what other “successful” coaches had done. So, I became tough-talking and mean. I acted like a head coach whose only thought was to figure out how to win.

After putting up with me for a few years, our team asked me for a team meeting. And for over two hours, they gave me examples of how my arrogance (傲慢) was hurtful. That was my time-out, and I chose to change. I realized that I needed to support our student athletes as whole human beings, not just athletes who won.

It is so much easier to give orders than to actually figure out how to motivate (激励) someone to be better. And the motivation takes a really long time to take root. The key ingredient was to develop trust through patience and honesty.

Let’s think about what you are talking with your parents on the car ride home. Are they focusing on the end result? Are you excited to use that time to show you are a winner? All of you care too much about the end result instead of your steps of learning.

We are all coaches in some ways. We all have the responsibility to develop champions in life for our world. That is what real success looks like, and that is what we call a win-win.

1. The underlined phrase “gets swept under the proverbial rug” probably means “_________”.
A.shows the resultB.does some harm
C.catches little attentionD.decides the success
2. The writer mentions his experience as the head coach to show _________.
A.it’s difficult to be a coach
B.how his team won championships
C.why his team asked him for a meeting
D.it’s better to motivate others than to give orders
3. Which of the following is a real success in life?
A.A kid who shows the medals and prizes he won to his parents.
B.A player who tries to win a gold medal at the cost of his health.
C.A coach who respects his members even though the team didn’t win.
D.A parent who keeps asking about the grades his kid gets in the exams.
4. The writer probably agrees that _________.
A.we shouldn’t plan for the end result
B.winning doesn’ t always mean success
C.a good coach often wants his team to win
D.it’ s time for us to change the way we live

文章大意:本文主要介绍了我们应该有梦想,并努力实现梦想。

5 . As teenagers (青少年), you have many dreams. These dreams can be very big, such as winning the Nobel Prize, or they can be small. You may just want to become one of the ten best students in your class. Once (一旦) you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you ever try to make your dream real?

Andrew Matthews, an Australian writer, tells us that making our dreams real is our life’s biggest challenge. You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects, or that is impossible for you to become a writer. These kinds of thoughts stop you from making your dream real. In fact, everyone can make his dream come true. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is. Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this step by step and your dream will come true faster because a big dream is, in fact (实际上), many small dreams. You must also never give up your dream. There will be difficulties (困难) on the road to your dreams. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You need to decide what is the most important. Studying instead of (代替) watching TV will bring you better exam results, while saving five yuan instead of buying an ice cream means you can buy a new book. If you don’t have dreams, you won’t make up your mind (下决心) to learn something more useful and find new hobbies (爱好).

1. The biggest difficulty on the road to your drear comes from ________.
A.your friendsB.yourselfC.your parentsD.your school
2. The underlined word “challenge” mean ________ in Chinese.
A.邀请B.麻烦C.态度D.挑战
3. You should NOT ________ to make your dream come true.
A.watch TV instead of studying

B.The first thing to do is to write down your dreams.
C.If you don’t do this step by step, your dream will come true faster.
D.It is not easy to make your dreams come true.

文章大意:本文介绍科学家关于“右撇子”和“左撇子”的研究。

6 . Most people around the world are right-handed (右撇子). This also seems to be true in history. In 1799, scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1,500 B.C. to the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works are right-handed, so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population is left-handed.

Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? Scientists now know that a person’s two hands each have their own jobs. For most people, the hand is used to find things or hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left-side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists as among people in other jobs.

No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone, so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene (基因) for right-handedness, he/she may become either right-handed or left-handed according to the chance and the people they work or live with.

Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago, left-handed children were made to use their right hands like other children, but today they don’t have to.

1. After studying works of art made at different times in history, the scientists found ________.
A.the art began from 1,500 B.C.
B.the works of art ended in the 1950s
C.most people shown in the works of art are right-handed
D.most people shown in the works of art are left-handed
2. How many people in the world are left-handed now?
A.Less than one sixth.B.More than a half.
C.About 40%.D.The passage doesn’t tell us.
3. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A.No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed.
B.Scientists think there must be some reason why people become left-handed.
C.Today children are not made to use their right hands only.
D.Left-handedness is cleverer than right-handedness.

文章大意:本文介绍了是否应该教授生活技能课。

7 . Nowadays, some schools teach traditional subjects like math, geography, and language, but they also teach life skills(技能). Life skills classes teach students how to keep their rooms clean and tidy, take care of their health, and have healthy personal relationships(关系). Some people say these classes prepare students better for life in the real world. But other people say these classes aren’t important. Students should only pay attention to how to get into university. What do you think?

Some people like the idea of teaching life skills in schools. They believe that life skills classes give students what they need to know to live on their own, whether they go to college or get a job after high school. They help prepare students for everyday real-life situations, such as cooking a meal and managing money. Many of these classes also teach “soft skills”, like how to listen and talk to people in a positive(积极的) way, which are important in the workplace and in personal relationships. As students learn more life skills, they become more confident in themselves.

On the other hand, some people argue that there is no time for more subjects at school. They think it’s more important to teach traditional subjects than life skills at school. Many students choose not to take life skills classes because these classes don’t improve their chances of getting into university. People also think it should be the job of parents to teach their kids what they need to know at home.

Personally, I think we already learn many life skills while doing traditional subjects. For example, we learn teamwork by doing group work, and organizing(安排) our homework teaches us how to use our time well. I believe all schools should teach life skills. It would not need too much work because there is no need to teach them separately(分开地) from traditional subjects. This will make sure that students are better prepared for college and work when they leave school.

1. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The different ways to live on your own.
B.The school experience of learning life skills.
C.The situation that calls for learning life skills.
D.The advantages of learning life skills in school.
2. The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.schools need to give more time to life skills classes
B.parents’ first job is to teach their children life skills
C.students can learn life skills in their traditional subjects
D.teachers should learn life skills together with their students
3. What might be the best title for the passage?
A.Life Skills: How Do Students Build Them?
B.Life Skills: Should School Teach Them?
C.Life Skills: Who Should Learn Them?
D.Life Skills: Are They Important?

Enjoy every moment of today. If it’s important to you, then do it today. Don’t put off your dreams. Pay attention to what is happening now, to the people around you, to the task at hand and to all of the choices you make today. Our future is set by what we decide and act on today.

Davy, the US

Money is important. We all have bills to pay and I understand that completely. But in the end, or even in the middle, maybe especially in the middle, money is not the end goal. It can’t always bring you happiness though it allows you to eat, dress and live.

We have so much to do, so much to finish and it feels as though we have to be in a hurry to get there. You do not have to do it all at once. Slow down and take one thing at a time. Yes, make plans, but don’t be in such a rush.

10 . Take a look at the children around. They are all dressing in baggy-pants (宽松裤) drinking soft drinks such as coke and reading Japanese cartoons. Whether you are in Beijing, Wuhan, Hong Kong, you will get the same impression (印象). But should we copy others or should we keep our differences?

It sounds convenient (方便的) that people around the world speak the same language, dress in the same style, eat the same food and play the same games. If the world was like this, you wouldn’t feel strange in any place of the world. But just imagine living in such a world. How colorless it would be!

Different kinds of food that people can taste, the colorful and fashionable clothes that we dress in and different languages we speak are all part of the different cultures that our ancestors (祖先) left us. These differences show their creativity (创造力) and talent. And we all enjoy different cultures in our daily lives. When you travel to other places, you want to see different things. When you talk to foreigners, you hope to listen to interesting stories. These differences in culture make our life colorful.

But with the development of globalization (全球化), the whole world is shrinking into a small village and many different cultures are disappearing. In most big cities around the world, people wear the same clothes. Fast food stores are everywhere. Hollywood movies are kicking traditional (传统的) arts out of our lives. The colors of our lives are disappearing.

There is a joke that even the panda and zebra want to live a colorful life. So let’s take action to protect our colorful culture before it becomes as simple as black and white.

It’s not difficult. We can learn different kinds of songs, try on traditional clothing and even eat food from different places instead of going to KFC. These can help. And we’re sure you will enjoy it.
