The Reasons of Learning English
Today lots of people in China can speak English and more and more people are learning this language. Then what do they learn English for? We have done a survey and here are some people’s reasons:
Alice White: I like traveling by myself very much. I’ve been to many places in China, and I plan to travel to some foreign countries. English is the most widely used language in the world, so learning English will do great help to my trips.
Mark Smith: I’m actually not so interested in English. I like Chinese much better. However, I have to learn English. We have to take English exams and the score of English takes a large part in the total score. Luckily, I’m not doing too badly in it, or I’ll have to struggle(奋斗) with it.
Ben Green: It is necessary to learn English. As you know, the competition in the job market is very fierce(激烈的). If I have a good knowledge of English, I will have a chance of getting a good job.
Kate Lu: It’s interesting, isn’t it? I can get information that others can’t get. I can talk and write letters to interesting people that others can’t communicate with. And I can always make people surprised by speaking good English.

My Views on Learning English
Not only adults but also teenagers have problems in their life. Here is a survey showing the main problems of teenagers.
The first is that they feel stressed (感到有压力的) because they have too much homework to do both at school and at home. They have lots of exams to take. And parents usually send them to different classes at weekends.
The second one is that more and more teenagers are getting short-sighted (近视). They often read in bed or keep reading for a long time without having a rest. Some of them are crazy about playing computer games. Some spend too much time watching TV.
Another serious problem among teenagers is that many of them are becoming fat. They eat too much junk food, but they take little exercise.
I think teenagers should think of ways to deal with the problems. They should make a plan for study and hobbies and find time to relax as much as possible.

3 . People who get many of their meals from packages may have higher risks of heart disease, stroke and early death, two great studies suggest. The findings, published in the journal BMJ, are the latest to point the finger at “ultra-processed(超加工的)” foods.
In one study, researchers followed more than 100,000 French adults for about five years. They found that the more ultra-processed foods people ate, the higher chances of a first-time heart condition or stroke they would get. Those who ate more processed foods were 23% more likely to suffer from heart or blood diseases. Moreover, there might be other things to be harmful to people’s health, according to researchers Bernard Srour and Mathilde Touvier from the University of Paris. Other studies have suggested that additives(添加剂) have detrimental effects on our body, which might make us unhealthy to some extent.
The researchers said that their study couldn’t surely prove cause and effect. But together with the results of other researches on similar topics, they could get the following message; try to eat more wholefoods(天然食物) and least processed foods. “I would like to say: the longer the shelf life(保质期), the shorter your life,” said Andrew Freeman. Based on the overall body of research, the most heart-healthy diet is rich in wholefoods, particularly plant-based foods like fruit and vegetables, whole grains and nuts. To make that more affordable and convenient, Freeman pointed to healthy choices—such as fresh-frozen vegetables.
However, some researchers had different opinions. “It is the degree of processing that seems important. It is ultra-processing that is the problem,” said Mark Lawrence, a professor of public health nutrition at Deakin University in Australia. He added that convenient, least processed foods could fit into a healthy lifestyle. “Simple changes—from sugary drinks to water, or sweet treats to fresh fruit—are good starting points,” Lawrence said.

4 . James Gray started a no-homework policy at Hamilton Elementary School four years ago when he was the head teacher of the public school.
“My attitude changed a lot after I had my own kids,” said Gray, whose two oldest children still attend Hamilton. He remembered a time when his daughter and wife were arguing (争吵) about piano practice, which made him think of the family fights over homework time. While his daughter wasn’t forced to play the piano, many students are forced to do their homework.
“It made me think a lot about what schools do to families,” he said. “I heard from parents over the years about this big fight that happens at night. It leads to this poor relationship between parents and children. It didn’t seem worth it for what schools are trying to get out of homework,” Gray added.
After researching and finding little evidence (证据) that students get much from homework, Gray decided to do away with homework at Hamilton in 2014. At first the policy was only for Grades 1 and 2. Then it spread through fourth grade and remains in place at the school, even though Gray left at the end of the 2016-2017 school year.
“Kids can become unhappy with school easily,” Gray said, explaining the family time at night is better for young students. “Learning happens all the time at home, whether you’re cooking a meal, playing a game or reading a book,” he said.
“This policy was well-received,” he said. While he was expecting different opinions, he heard none. “Parents would tell me, ‘We played a game last night, and it was so nice to sit down for an hour.’ or ‘My child sat down and read a book on his own.’”
Gray said he heard from parents and educators in other schools in the city and across the country wanting to develop their own no-homework policies.

5 . Now, China has the second largest number of Internet users in the world after the United States. Many of Chinese Internet users are teenagers. They spend about 13 hours every week online. On the Internet, students can find out almost everything. Surfing the Internet (上网) can help them with their homework and learn a lot of knowledge (知识).
People can use the Internet to write letters, stories and to send emails. Many teenagers keep in touch with their friends online. They can also make new friends through QQ or ICQ. Some of the students surf the Internet just for fun. They like to listen to music, watch films and go to their favourite stars’ websites.
But some parents always think that the Internet takes young people away from study. “They spend too much time playing computer games and most games are about killing and fighting. It’s too dangerous. And there are some dirty things on the Internet,” says a mother of a 13-year-old boy.

6 . An online survey by ride-hailing company Didi found that more than half of the participants agree to allow teenagers under 18 to ride in Didi cars without an adult.
Of the 651,856 people who took part in the survey, 56% felt that those under 18 should be able to hail rides alone. They believe that a safer ride lies more in stricter management of drivers rather than put restrictions (限制) on a passenger’s age.
However, some argued that no matter how excellent any safety measures are, they cannot completely stop crimes (犯罪). They also felt that guardians like parents should be responsible for children who have a weak sense of safety and self-protection.
According to a report in 2018, crime rates for internet ride-hailing drivers are 0.48 per 100,000 people, compared with the rates for traditional taxi drivers being 6.27, almost 13 times higher. An expert said, “People are usually less worried when their children take a taxi alone instead of using an internet ride-hailing service. But in fact, the latter is a safer choice.”
Wang Xiaolin, who is a lawyer, said it’s not reasonable to stop all teenagers under 18 using ride-hailing services when they do have such needs. “We can divide them into more specific groups. According to the country’s law on road traffic safety, children under 6 cannot use public transportation without an adult. It’s the same when it comes to car-hailing services,” Wang said, “But the company should be able to let guardians know the real-time driving route to ensure children’s safety,” he added.
1. According to the survey, what do over half of the participants agree on?A.Passengers’ age should be restricted. |
B.Teenagers should take Didi rides with adults. |

7 . Zhang Yaoyi, 14, Shanghai:
I think it is good for teachers to use WeChat (微信) in class. When they ask a question, everyone is happy to answer it on WeChat. They don’t have to put up their hands (举起手), but just write on it. And the emojis (表情符号) are fun to use.
Cao Yue, 14, Jiangsu:
Using WeChat in class is good for shy students. They don’t like to speak in class. But on WeChat, they can write what or how they think freely. It makes students have a good feeling of joining class activities. I think it is good to use WeChat in class.
Guo Ruiting, 14, Guangdong:
I don’t think we can use WeChat in class. We need to use cell phone (手机) for WeChat. But it is difficult for the teacher to manage (管理) the class. Some students cannot control (控制) themselves when they have cell phone. They can use their phones to play games or talk on QQ in class. I don’t think it is right to use WeChat in class.
Sun Jiayang, 13, Jiangsu:

Many kids do housework such as doing the dishes, making the bed, and folding the clothes. In exchange, they get some money or other computer time after doing housework. Paying kids for housework is one of the most popular topics, especially at a time when everyone is more careful about money. Some parents think because adults are paid to do their jobs, we should pay kids for everyday housework. But some people don’t think kids should get rewards(报酬) for doing housework. Susie Walton, an expert, believe that by rewarding kids, parents send a message that work isn’t worth doing unless you get something in return. “Running any kind of housework is a team effort,” Walton said. “A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities in the house, and families decide how they want their home to look, and how they are going to keep it looking like what they want.” Other people believe that getting a reward encourages kids to do housework, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to get money. There are also apps(程序) that give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed(兑现) either online or in the real world. “Our goal is to give kids lawful power so they can get rewards,” says Chris Bergman. “And kids need rewards to help encourage them to do housework.” |

Computers vs. Textbooks
①The debate on “textbooks vs. computers” has been going on for years. How much technology is enough in the classroom? Should textbooks be replaced by computers?
②There is no doubt that computers are powerful tools. Computer-based lesson plans are updated in real time. New information can be added as soon as changes take place. Students can find the latest information for the subjects they are studying.
③With computers, students can learn how to use them for the rest of their lives. Today, computers are used in almost all areas. Students can prepare themselves better for the future if they have computers.
④However, despite these advantages, I think textbooks must stay.
⑤Textbooks are professionally edited. All the facts have been checked. They are put together in the best way. Each chapter builds on what a student has previously learned. On the internet, however, not all the information is true or organized.
⑥With textbooks, it is easier for students to take notes. Scientists have found that taking notes by hand helps students learn more.
⑦Textbooks are also less expensive than computers. While most families can afford textbooks, not all of them can afford a computer. Every student should be allowed to learn what he needs to learn. It’s wrong to rob a student of his right to learn just because he can’t afford the material.
⑧Computers are playing an important role in education. They allow students to learn more. However, I don’t think they can replace textbooks. If students want to learn well, they must use textbooks. Do you agree with me?
1. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?2. Does the third paragraph suggest that computers are useful to students?
3. How many advantages do textbooks have according to the passage?
4. What advantage do textbooks have over computers according to paragraph 7?
5. What’s the writer’s point of view in the last paragraph?
6. Do you think computers should replace textbooks? Why or Why not?

Nowadays, more and more people learn English with different reasons and ways.
10 . Have you ever picked strawberries yourself? The sweet fruit looks nice, but a light pressure can make them out of shape, so you have to be very careful when picking them. Nowadays, there are many young people who are just like strawberries. They easily break down when they face difficulties. They don’t know what to do when they are in trouble. They have a common name—strawberry kids.
Why are many students so easy to break down? Parents and schools are a main reason. Many students are the only child in their family. Their parents do almost everything for them in their daily life, while schools care more about their grades instead of developing their personalities.
Liu Yue, 13, is from Fujian. His mom hardly criticizes him and he always feels good about himself. When a teacher criticized him, he felt surprised and sad. He began to doubt his ability.
Students should do something to make themselves mentally (心理上) strong. An expert said, “When you are in trouble, don’t ask for help too quickly. You should try to deal with problems first by yourself. I also advise you to take an active part in sports and social activities. That can make you mentally strong.”
Growing up is not just a happy process. Pains also go along with it. The most important thing is to face the pains bravely and learn from them.
