From Shy Girl to Pop Star
For this month’s Young World magazine, I interviewed 19-year-old Asian pop star Candy Wang. Candy told me that she used to be really shy and took up singing to deal with her shyness. As she got better, she dared to sing in front of her class, and then for the whole school. Now she’s not shy anymore and loves singing in front of crowds.
I asked Candy how life was different after she became famous. She explained that there are many good things, like being able to travel and meet new people all the time. “I didn’t use to be popular in school, but now I get tons of attention everywhere I go.” how ever, too much attention can also be a bad thing. “I always have to worry about how I appear to others and I have to be very careful about what I say or do. And I don’t have much private time anymore. Hanging out with friends is almost impossible for me now because there are always guards around me.”
What does Candy have to say to all those young people who want to become famous? “Well,” she begins slowly, “you have to be prepared to give up your normal life. You can never imagine how difficult the road to success is. Many times I thought about giving up, but I fought on. You really require a lot of talent and hard work to succeed. Only a very small number of people make it to the top.
The giant panda (大熊猫) Ya Ya arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on April 27, 2023 from Memphis, Tennessee.
In April 2003, as part of the US-China giant panda protection and research program, Ya Ya arrived at the Memphis Zoo in Tennessee with another panda Le Le. In the beginning, the agreement for Ya Ya’s stay in the US was for 10 years. But later it increased to twenty years.
During their time at Memphis Zoo, Ya Ya and Le Le helped scientists do many researches. These researches let people know the importance of pandas.
Last month a vet(兽医) and a keeper from the Beijing Zoo reached the Memphis Zoo. “To look after Ya Ya well after she returns to China, we also learn some methods and orders for behavior training from US keepers at Memphis,” said the Beijing Zoo keeper sent to Memphis. Beijing Zoo also made many preparations to welcome Ya Ya back, including providing care plans, medical support and fresh foods.
The 23-year-old panda, Ya Ya finally returned to China from the United States after a 20-year loan(租借). Many Chinese people even cried (流泪) when they heard that Ya Ya returned to China. Ya Ya is so smart and cute. We believe that she’ll have a happy life in China.

Giant panda Ya Ya was eating bamboo during a farewell (告别) party at Memphis Zoo in the US, on April 8, 2023. She will come back to China at the end of this month. About 500 people went to the party. They said goodbye to Ya Ya, signed (签名) letters, and watched cultural shows at the party.
Ya Ya was born at Beijing Zoo in 2000. She traveled to Memphis Zoo in 2003 as part of a giant panda protection and research program (项目) between China and the US. Along with the female (雌性的) panda, the male panda Le Le also joined the program. The first plan was that the pair would come back together. Sadly, Le Le died in February.
A giant panda can live for about 15 years in the wild. Ya Ya is now old in terms of giant panda years. Although she has a skin disease (皮肤病), the panda is still in good health now. Panda keepers from China are in the US and work with the zoo workers to care for Ya Ya. China is ready to welcome Ya Ya back.

英雄回家！第九批在韩志愿军烈士遗骸回国
Our fallen heroes have come back home! The remains (遗骸) of 88 Chinese soldiers who died in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (抗美援朝战争) were returned to China from South Korea on September 16, 2022.
Safeguarded by two J-20 fighters (歼-20战机), a Y-20 military (军事的) transport aircraft (运输机) carrying the remains landed at the Taoxian international airport in Shenyang, Liaoning.
This is the first time that J-20, the country’s most powerful fighter aircraft, has performed this kind of mission (任务). It shows the highest tribute (敬意) and respect for heroes returning to the homeland, noted China Daily.
The remains were then transported from the airport to Shenyang Volunteer Martyrs’ Cemetery (沈阳志愿军烈士陵园). A burial ceremony took place there on September 17.
“I don’t know their names, but I know they are heroes and we should remember them forever,” said Chen Meixu, a student from Shenyang at the ceremony.
Pei Jinjia, minister of the Veterans’ Affairs (退役军人事务部), said the heroes’ mission had been finished. They should rest in peace in their homeland instead of in a foreign country.
The War started in October 1950. 2.9 million soldiers of the Chinese People’s Volunteers (CPV) fought in the war, and about 200,000 died in the war.
South Korea began to find the remains of fallen soldiers in 2000. This has been the ninth continuous (连续的) year of the handover (交接) between the two countries. Since 2014, 913 soldiers of the CPV have been laid to rest in Shenyang Volunteer Martyrs’ Cemetery.

Wentian will be mainly used for studying space life sciences. The lab is open to scientists from other countries, too. Canadian cancer scientist Tricia Larose posted on Twitter that she would “happily” travel to the Tiangong space station to do research. Larose’s project of “tumors (肿瘤) in space” was chosen as one of nine projects to be carried out in Wentian. It was chosen by the United Nations and China from 42 applicants (申请者) from 27 countries.
Her project tries to study if tumor growth could slow or stop in weightless conditions and how space radiation (辐射) (C) affects our DNA.

“His encouragement changed me a lot. I decided to believe in myself, and that I must give it my all to realize my dream,” Su noted.
